Situated on a low, natural ridge on the S bank of the River Suir, c. 50m S of the river. The surrounding terrain is very marshy and liable to flood in winter leaving this site dry. An oval enclosure (29m N-S; 40m E-W) defined by a scarp (H 0.6m) and fosse (Wth 2.9m; D 0.28m) along the S side and by a bank (Wth 2.3m; int. H 0.6m; ext. H 1.2m) at E; ditch and field bank concentric with E sector. Some quarrying has taken place in the NW quadrant. An irregularly shaped area (diam. 36.4m NE-SW; 35m NW-SE), almost D-shaped, with a trackway running parallel to the fairly straight SW side. The site is enclosed by a stone wall (Wth c. 1.4m; int. H 0.77m; ext. H 1m), which has collapsed for much of its circumference, and a fosse (W 3.3m; D 0.4m) and outer wall (Wth 1.2m; ext. H 0.7m) in the SE quadrant. There is an entrance (Wth 4.1m) through the inner and outer wall at SE with almost continuous stone-facing lining the entrance. Where the wall is denuded there is evidence of stone revetment with stone fill between. Rock outcrop is exposed in places in the interior. Large boulders in linear alignment are all that remain of the outer wall at N. The interior is heavily overgrown with scrub making it difficult to obtain a clear overall picture of the site. Located on the SW-facing slope of a hill in gently undulating pastureland. A roughly circular area (diam. 36.5m N-S; 34.3m E-W) defined by a bank (Wth 2m; int. H 0.18m; ext. H 2.2m), a fosse (Wth 3m; D 1.25m) and a counterscarp bank (Wth 2m). The NW sector of the outer bank appears to be part of an old field boundary which respects the site with stone facing on the inner face. This field boundary gives the impression of a wide intervening fosse at this point. The fosse narrows towards the N and the field boundary appears to have been flattened. A roadway truncates the possible outer bank at S. Some scrub clearance has been dumped in the fosse in the E quadrant. Quite a lot of stone protrudes from the inner bank in places, particularly at S. Situated in a valley on ground sloping very slightly to the SE to the floodplain of the River Suir. Ringforts (TN047-020 and TN047-019) are visible to the SE and NE respectively. An irregular-shaped enclosure (diam. NW-SE 38.5m; NE-SW 18m) defined by a fairly substantial earthen bank (Wth 2m; int. H 0.46m; ext. H 1.23m) and a wide, flat-bottomed fosse (Wth 2.1m; D 0.62m). Situated on flat level ground in pasture near the edge of a marsh with the flood-plain of the River Suir to the SE and a nearby ringfort (TN047-020) visible c. 100m to the SW. The site is very overgrown making detailed examination impossible. It is enclosed by a substantial bank (Wth 2.7m; int. H 0.53m; ext. H 1.83m), a wide, flat-bottomed fosse (Wth 4.2m; D 1.14m) and a large outer bank (Wth 1.4m; ext. H 0.6m). There is a possible causewayed entrance at E and a gap in the banks at N. Situated on flat land at the edge of a marsh. A spring well in the SE quadrant flows strongly into a large pond to the SE. Depicted as somewhat D-shaped on the 1st ed. (1843) OS 6-inch map while being more circular on the current (1952-3) revision. An irregular, roughly D-shaped enclosure (dims. c. 33m N-S) defined by an earth and stone bank (Wth 1.9m; int. H 0.33m; ext. H 1m) and external fosse (Wth 2.7m; D 0.36m). A gap in the bank at W (Wth 3.8m) appears to have been broken through and may not represent the original entrance. Situated on the NW-facing slope of a hill which extends gently down to the River Suir. Described in the Civil Survey (1654-6) as 'the stump of a Castle…out of repaire' (Simington 1931, vol. 1, 55). Theobald Purcell is listed as proprietor in 1640 (ibid.). The building was in ruins when visited by the Ordnance Survey who described it as 'an old castle which was built of lime and sand mortar' with walls four feet (1.2m) thick. The walls, though largely demolished, survived to a height of ten feet (3m) and the entrance to the ground floor was through an arch near the NE angle of the N wall (O'Flanagan 1930, vol. 2, 192). According to two local sources the castle is completely gone with no visible trace above ground. One of the sources said that there was a tradition of a church at the castle location. Situated on ground sloping very slightly to the SE with a marsh c.100m to the SE. A small roughly square-shaped area (dims. 22m NE-SW; 21.5m NW-SE) with rounded corners defined by a low bank (Wth 1.5m; int. H 0.32m; ext. H 0.5m) which has been levelled in the W corner. The bank and interior are overgrown with scrub and nettles. No outer fosse evident. There is a heap of earth and small boulders at SW and the bank is disturbed on either side of this mound. Situated on the gentle N-facing slope of a low rise overlooking wet, marshy land to the N. The field has been ploughed and planted with beet. This site was inspected in 1957 and described as a 'very low square earthen platform' c. 11m in diameter, rising c. 0.3m above the surrounding ground level and sloping gently at the exterior (OPW files, 1957). The inspector speculated that this was a modern feature, suggesting a compost heap which had never been spread and had become grassed over. There is a slight rise where the site formerly stood.
