Situated on a natural low rise of ground sloping to the W and E, in undulating pasture. A circular platform (diam. 31.5m N-S; 30.5m E-W) defined by a scarp (H 0.46m), a flat-bottomed fosse (Wth 3.3m) and an outer bank (Wth 1.2m; int. H 1.86m; ext. Situated on a gentle E-facing slope in undulating terrain in pastureland with a fortified house (TN047-052001) located c. 100m to the SW. A small plantation-type stone house, roughly rectangular (8.7m N-S; 4.76m E-W between towers externally), composed of roughly coursed limestone rubble, with a three-quarter-round tower at each angle. The S length of wall survives with an external facing which has a base batter (H 0.5m; T 0.15m). Only the SW angle tower is exposed - the remaining towers and walls are covered under rubble with only the faint outline visible. The site is not marked on the 1st (1843) ed. OS 6-inch map and is depicted as a mound on the 1952-3 ed. The angle tower and lengths of wall were exposed c. 1990 by the landowner who was removing material for road metalling. Removal of rubble material was halted as the building became apparent. This house compares in plan and scale to plantation houses in the north of the country, such as at Ballinafad, Co. Sligo and Roughan, Co. Tyrone. Described in the Civil Survey (1654-6) as 'a stone house and a bawne inhabited yett wanting repaire' (Simington 1931, vol. 1, 55). James Butler of Brittas is listed as proprietor in 1640 (ibid.). The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Tipperary. Situated on a gentle E-facing slope in undulating pastureland. A plantation-type house (TN047-051----) is located c. 100m to NE. The site is described in the Civil Survey (1654-6) as 'a stone house and a Bawne inhabitted yett wanting repaire' (Simington 1931, vol. 1, 55). When visited by the Ordnance Survey in the mid-nineteenth century portion of the house and bawn (TN047-052002-) were still visible as 'an old building in ruins, commonly called Stone ... the materials of which are limestone and lime and sand mortar. Two gables and one sidewall of the structure are still seen... It appears this was a dwelling (or mansion) house as chimneys are still remaining on the ruin' (O'Flanagan 1930, vol. 2, 192). The dimensions given in the OS Letters for the building are 54ft 2in (16.5m) long by 26ft (c. 8m) wide, 20ft (6m) high and the walls 4ft (1.2m) thick. A bawn wall which is described as having two arches ran off one of the gables for a length of 54ft (16.5m) (ibid). This length of bawn wall (T 1.6m) still survives. Neither arch seems suitable as an entrance as they are too low - the more southerly is 1.8m wide and the larger is 4m wide with voussoirs springing almost from ground level. The N face of the bawn has an oversailing wall (H c. 2m) which projects 0.2m over the lower portion of wall (H 3m), the function of which is unclear. The S portion of the bawn wall has been removed by the landowner c. 20 years ago and had contained a gateway. There are a number of stone walls in the immediate vicinity which appear to be of nineteenth-century date, however, some earlier portions of wall may be incorporated. A road running E-W across a N-S river valley. The river runs N to join the River Suir. The line of the roadway is represented by a stone wall and earthen bank with stone facing surmounted by a hedgerow in places. Presently there is a concrete road (Wth 3.5m) on the S side of a stone wall boundary. The road is slightly raised (ext. H 0.2m) on the S side, with post and wire fencing on either side and in places consists of a gravel trackway with grass in the centre. This boundary continues down to a stream, which was a fording point (TN047-102002) and like the road is indicated on Rocque's map of 1755 (A Plan of the Camp near Thurles, NLI 16.I.17 (9)), the road is also marked as 'Old Road to Cashel' on 1775 map (Ms maps of lands in the baronies of Clanwilliam, Eliogarty, Iffa and Offa, Middlethird, Ormond Upper and Lower, Co. Glazed timber door to porch. Single-storey outbuildings having pitched roofs and roughcast rendered walls, with square-headed openings with half-doors and brick segmental-arch cart doors. Rendered wall and wrought-iron gates to roadside boundary.
