- TS049-047: Ringfort - rath, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CTS049-047----. On a S-facing slope of rising ground in upland area with good views in all directions, nearby ringfort (TS049-048----) 150m to the SE. Situated on grassland, this is a poorly preserved ringfort, the enclosing features in the W and E sectors survive but elsewhere they have been levelled. Originally the ringfort consisted of a circular area (diam. 40m N-S; 30m E-W) enclosed by an earthen bank (top Wth 2.5m; base Wth 5m; int. H 0.3m; ext. H 1m) and external fosse (base Wth 6m; top Wth 2m; ext. D 0.3m), but now the bank and fosse survives from SW through W to NW only and from ENE through E to SE elsewhere the bank and outer fosse have been levelled. No clear entrance feature visible, small mound (H 0.7-1m; top diam. 5m; base diam. 15m) which appears to be a spoil heap of coal-like material visible in SE quadrant of the ringfort, may be the result of bulldozing of enclosing bank along at S. Large gap in bank at E which may be modern gap (Wth described in 1956 (SMR file) as a circular area (diam. 130 ft [42m] E-W) enclosed by an earthen bank reduced to a scarp and outer fosse (W 15ft [5m]) with no evidence of any levelling of the enclosing bank and fosse and no mention of any mound in SE quadrant of interior. Interior slopes from N to S following the natural slope of the land on which it is situated. On a S-facing slope of rising ground in upland area with good views in all directions, nearby ringfort (TS049-047----) 150m to the NW. Ringfort consists of a slightly raised circular area enclosed by an earth and stone bank and outer fosse, no clear entrance feature visible. Ringfort is well preserved but with several gaps in bank, probably cattle gaps. Impossible to examine the interior due to dense cover of vegetation. Enclosing fosse from NE through E to SE has a stream running though elsewhere the fosse is dry. The E half of the interior was waterlogged at time of inspection while the W half of the interior was dry. Described in 1956 (OPW file) as a circular area (diam. 170 ft [55m] N-S; 150 ft [49m] E-W) enclosed by an earthen bank (ext. H 3ft [0.9m]; base Wth 8ft [2.6m]) and outer fosse (Base Wth 10ft [3.2m]; ext. D 5ft [1.6m]) with no evidence of any levelling of the enclosing bank and fosse. Interior slopes from N to S following the natural slope of the land on which it is situated. On flat poorly drained grassland in upland area with good views in all directions. Field has recently been reclaimed and reseeded with grass except for area around circular moated site. Monument consists of a slightly raised circular area (int. diam. 30m N-S; 28m E-W) enclosed by an earth and stone bank (top Wth 2m; base Wth 4.5m; ext. H 1m; int. H 0.2m) with external waterlogged fosse (base Wth 2-3m; top Wth 4-5m; ext. D 0.7m). Gap (Wth 4m) in bank at SSW, may be original entrance which has been widened. Bank and outer fosse well preserved from NE to E, modern field boundary intersects bank and fosse at NW through N to NE destroying both enclosing features, this field boundary which is depicted on the latest edition OS 6-inch map is orientated NE-SW and cuts across the N quadrant of the monument. The interior is very wet which is unusual and this along with its location may suggest possible circular moated site classification. Suggestion of an outer bank from E to SE only, however this is covered in grass and vegetation making it impossible to take measurements. Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 26 August 2011

On the edge of a ravine overlooking a river valley in an upland area on the SW-facing slope of wet unimproved grassland with good views from SW through W to NW. Impressive but overgrown monument consisting of a circular area (approx. diam. 24m NW-SE; overall diam. 42m NW-SE) defined by a scarp (H 1-3m), wet inner fosse (base Wth 1.5m, top Wth 7m; ext. D 3m) , impressive earthen bank (top Wth 2.4m; base Wth 10m, ext. H 3-4m) and external fosse (base Wth 1.6m; top Wth 6m; ext. D 1.6m). No entrance feature visible. Very difficult to examine or take measurements of the monument due to its dense cover of vegetation. The earthen bank and external fosse survive only from NNW through N through E to SSW where it runs onto a ravine which provides a defensive element along the rest of the monument. Very defensive location being situated on the edge of a river ravine with the outer defences running around the cliff-edge fort on the less defensive upslope. The bank profile is very similar to Beal Boru, Co. Clare (CL045-031----) being quite gradual in its slope on both faces and is higher than the central platform, the fosses are very narrow and quite deep with the outer fosse waterlogged from E to S at time of visit. Cattle gap in bank at E. Platform is generally the same height as the external ground surface with the enclosing bank much higher than the circular area it encloses. On a S-facing slope of rising grassland in upland area with good extensive views from E to W with higher ground immediately to the N. There is another enclosure (TS049-054----) 400m to the E. Monument depicted as a roughly circular enclosure (diam. c. 33m N-S; c. 37m E-W) on the 1st (1840) ed. OS 6-inch map. On the subsequent 1903 ed. the northern sector of the monument appears to have been levelled as no bank is indicated from NW-NE. The enclosure was probably completely levelled during land improvement as the land was originally wet and appears to have been reclaimed. The monument is not visible at ground level. In grassland on a SE-facing slope of rising ground in upland region overlooking stream to SE. Ringfort consists of a circular area (int. diam. 41m N-S; 34m E-W) enclosed by a well-preserved earth and stone bank (top Wth 1.8m; base Wth 3m; int. H 0.15-0.5m; ext. H 1.7m) and outer fosse (base Wth 2m; top Wth 4m; ext. D 0.6-1m) with gaps (Wth 3m) in bank at NNE and W (Wth 2m). Bank reduced a scarp from NE through N to S and no evidence of a fosse at E but visible on all other sides (from S through W to NE). Traces of a low barely visible external bank (Wth 2m; H 0.1m) visible from NE through E to SE only not visible elsewhere. Bank intersected by a field boundary at NE, S and W as depicted on OS 6-inch map. Both gaps have the appearance of being later livestock entrances.
