On a gradual S-facing slope in undulating terrain, under tillage. Monument indicated as a roughly square enclosure on 1st (1840) ed. OS 6-inch map but is not depicted on the 2nd (1901-05) ed. suggesting it was levelled in the intervening period. Moated site shows up on an aerial photograph (Air Corps V.312/3079-8) as a cropmark, the N and W sides of which are straight though the E and S sides are less well defined. Despite being levelled the moated site is still visible as a raised area (diam. 28.6m N-S; 25.8m E-W) defined by a very low broad rise (Wth c. 10m; H c. 37m). Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 26 August 2011 - TS078-019001: Concentric enclosure, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CTS078-019001-. On break of a S-facing slope in undulating hilly terrain. Field under tillage. No visible trace of enclosure at ground level, though there are a lot of small stone visible in the immediate area. Monument appears to be depicted as an irregular depression or quarry on 1st (1840) ed. OS 6-inch map but as a circular enclosure on the 2nd (1901-05) ed. OS 6-inch map (diam. 32m on 25-inch OS map) and on aerial photograph(Air Corps V.312/3079/8). Historical information about a possible souterrain (TS078-019002-) in a 'fort' in Heathview may be referring to this enclosure (Keatinge 1958-9, 12). A field bank (Wth c. 2.5m; H 1.18m), heavily overgrown with brambles, runs roughly E-W c. 20m N of the monument, curving around the former enclosure and is possibly an outer bank. This bank may have been augmented with material from the destroyed enclosure. The Air Corps aerial photograph indicates this curve continuing W of the enclosure as a cropmark. Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of revised upload: 7 January 2015 - TS078-019002: Souterrain, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CTS078-019002-. According to Keatinge (1958-9, 12), in conversation with a local smith, he was told 'if I wished to see a still greater sight in the way of raths, that he would in a few minutes bring me to one much more easily entered, and 'with finer rooms in it:' this last rath being situate at Heathview, near Glenbower', and continues that 'the smith and his neighbours say that the entrance to Heathview fort is not in the fort itself, but situate some yards off, near a dyke, and has stairs descending into it'. Unfortunately the author did not have the opportunity to investigate this claim. Apart from the ringwork in the S of the townland, there is only one other enclosure in the townland so the likelihood is that this may be the 'fort' alluded to above, this monument (TS078-019001-) has since been levelled. Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 26 August 2011 - TS078-020: Castle - ringwork, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CTS078-020----. On high ground, utilising a natural spur or promontory, overlooking steep river gorge to N, E and S. This promontory was cut off from the ridge along the W-NW sector by a fosse (Wth 8.8m; D c. 2m). The ringwork is largely defined by a steep natural scarp, though along the NW side it is defined by an earthen bank (Wth 2.7m crest, 4.5m base; H above int. 0.56m; H above ext. 1.7-1.93m), there is a lot of shale in the bank construction. At the base of the NE slope (H 5m) there is a berm (Wth 3.6m) with a stoney bank (L 20.5m; Wth 4.64m; int. H 0.86m; ext. H 3.5m) at the edge of a further natural fall. Monument heavily overgrown with brambles, bracken and scrub around the edge and in interior (diam. 29m N-S; 37m WNW-ESE from 25-inch OS map). Ringwork is roughly triangular in plan, as depicted on 2nd (1901-05) ed. OS 6-inch map. Entrance (Wth 1.7m) in the W quadrant. Refuse has been dumped outside the NW quadrant. There appears to be a large pit in SE quadrant of the interior with mound of upcast immediately N of this. This monument is locally known as 'the old castle'.
