On the E bank of Kedrah Stream. The Civil Survey (1654-6) (Simington 1931, vol.1, 321) refers to 'a Well called Toburneglory' as a landmark along the 'parish of Mortlestowne', this may be the well now known as 'Toberanouraun'. The well used to pump water up to Kedrah House from the 1930s to the 1960s. A ram was inserted to pump water and in the 1960s the stream was fenced off. The well has since been quarried out with no visible trace at ground level. According to local information the well was called Tober an amhrán (Well of the song) and was reputedly the place where a mermaid sat and sang. The surrounding field was known as parc an amhrán. Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 07 April 2014 - TS075-032001: Castle - tower house, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CTS075-032001-. On the summit of a flat-topped ridge sloping very gently to the S, in a farmyard. A tower house (TS075-030001-) is visible c. 700m to the SW. Described in the Civil Survey (1654-6) as 'a ruinous castle with a bawne about it' and the proprietor in 1640 is listed as 'Sir Richard Butler of Knockytocher in the County of Kilkenny Baronett Irish Papist' (Simington 1931, vol.1, 322). This tower house (ext. dims. 8.8m E-W; int. dims. 7.3m N-S; 6.1m E-W; E wall T 0.85m) is built of limestone rubble, randomly coursed, with roughly cut quoins and a base-batter on the S and W walls (H 1m; Wth 0.4m), less pronounced on the N wall (Wth 0.19m; H 0.5m). The base of the N wall (T 1.67m) has clay and pebble mortar exposed, possibly repair as elsewhere the mortar is a hard lime and small pebble aggregate. The external E wall is almost entirely obscured by a house which has been built against this face. The N wall has largely collapsed, only a portion of the W end surviving, with modern render covering. The W wall is in good condition, with stables built up against it. No external features are visible in this wall, which has been limewashed and partly cement-plastered in the small tack-room at the N end. The cat-slide roof is roughly to the level of the base of the vault of the tower house. The tower house was entered at the N end of the E wall, but only the S jamb of the doorway survives. The internal lobby arrangement does not survive. A mural stairs rises in the E wall, with the lower steps modern, and possibly the entire stairs may be rebuilt as White's late 19th-century account states that there was no entrance or stairs surviving (1892, 64). The ground level is higher than originally, raised by collapsed masonry from the vault. The internal E face has been rendered. There are two large pointed-arch recesses in the S wall, one containing a blocked ogee-headed window and the other an inserted late 18th or 19th-century ope, brick lined and blocked up with stone. The first-floor was supported on wooden beams, with a pointed stone vault over but the N section has collapsed. There is a deep window embrasure in the centre of S wall, but the window is broken out. The second floor was accessed from a mural stair in the SE corner. There is a joggle-jointed, polished limestone fireplace in the centre of the W wall, and to N a splayed window embrasure with the window broken out. In the S end of the W wall there is a small broken-out window, only visible externally. In the S wall there is a narrow mural passage (Wth 0.6m) lit by two broken out windows, at the E and W ends. This mural passage may have been accessed from the main second floor chamber or from the mural stairs. The tower house above second-floor level has been levelled. There is no evidence of a garderobe chute. According to the OS Letters (1840) the 'walls of the bawn remain still on the north side of this ruin' (O'Flanagan 1930, vol. 2, 124 (345)). This possible bawn wall is located N of Kedrah tower house (TS075-032001-), running roughly E-W (L 55m; Wth 0.46m; H 1.92m). The wall has been completely rendered with concrete, no stonework exposed. Farm buildings and a milking parlour have been built up against the internal face of the possible bawn along much of its length. There is a farm building at the NW angle, which may or may not correspond with the original return of the bawn wall. There is a strong local tradition that this is the bawn wall of the castle. Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 07 April 2014 - TS075-038: Earthwork, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CTS075-038----. On the crest of a ridge running roughly N-S. Land rises to the SE and slopes to the NW. Surrounded by pasture. On the 1st (1840) ed. OS 6-inch map it is depicted as a slightly oval enclosure, on the 2nd (1901-05) ed. it is depicted as an oval mound (diam. c. 40m NNE-SSW; c. 32m ESE-WNW); fosse (Wth c. 4-7.5m) and outer bank. The earthwork has been fenced off and is very heavily overgrown with scrub. It consists of a large flat-topped mound (overall diam. c. 53m ESE-WNW) with a berm on the S side. Below the berm the mound falls in a steep scarp (H 2.6m over 5.6m) with stone protruding. There may be a bank along the S edge at the top of the mound. Difficult monument to classify due to overgrowth but it is definitely not a ringfort. According to the NMI Topographical Files an E-ware rim sherd was found 'in the eroded bank of a ringfort' at these co-ordinates. This type of pottery dates to the 7th/8th century A. D. Enclosing a hilltop with a steep drop to the SW and a more gradual fall of slope to the NE before the ground levels out within the NE quadrant. Ringfort (TS075-040----) located c. 50m to the NE. The summit of the hill runs NW-SE roughly through the centre of the monument. Large steep-sided hillock (diam. 170m N-S and E-W) enclosed by internal fosse (Wth 3.4m) and large substantial outer bank (Wth crest 6-10.5m; base 8.7-14m; int. H 2.3-2.78m; ext. H 1.17-3.6m). A modern stone wall has been built on portion of the bank in the NE quadrant from N to NE. The summit has been partially quarried into resulting in an irregular hollow N of centre. There is a cattle gap through the bank in the WSW. There is a lot of stone evident in the grass-covered bank. The bank in the S quadrant has been quarried into and the bank in the SE is slightly denuded. From E-SE the bank has been levelled with only low traces surviving. In the NW sector the bank kinks out to form a possible structure (dims. 10.3m NE-SW; 12m NW-SE) or may be result of quarrying. There is a possible entrance (Wth 2m) to the enclosure immediately W of this structure. The OS Letters refer to some interference with the bank at the NE and S sides where 'lately part of it was pared off outwardly...for a byroad that runs here now' (O'Flanagan 1930, vol. 2, 125). On level break of slope, c. 50m E of a henge (TS075-039----), in rough pasture. Roughly circular area (diam. 29.3m N-S; 32m E-W) enclosed by a bank (Wth 3.1m crest, 5.7m base; int. H 0.65m; ext. H 1.58m) which has stone protruding, particularly at the crest. There is a gap (Wth 4m) in the ESE quadrant which may be the original entrance though it has probably been widened. The bank is denuded from the NW to NNE and the outer face of the bank in the S quadrant is eroded in places. On gentle SE-facing slope just off crest of hill, in undulating terrain, under grass. Field boundary runs roughly E-W immediately S of monument, it kinks out to avoid the ringfort which is heavily overgrown with scrub. Ringfort (diam. c. 30m) enclosed by a bank (H 1.06-1.57m SE and W quadrant respectively) largely reduced to scarp and fosse which is only evident along the E half and is heavily overgrown. Lot of dumping of sileage and refuse along E edge of ringfort which is fenced off with post and wire fencing. On crest of broad, flat-topped hill, sloping slightly to E, under pasture, in undulating terrain. Cairn visible on mountain to W, Knockgraffon Motte (TS075-019001-) clearly visible to NW. Enclosure (TS076-032002-) lies 3m SE of this monument. Irregular square enclosure (dims. 24.6m N-S; 24.5m E-W) defined by earthen bank most pronounced in SE quadrant and along S side (Wth 1.35m crest, 3.3m base; int. H 0.55m; ext. H 1.09m). N bank appears to have been flattened, very broad and low (Wth 1.8m crest, 3.8m base; int. H 0.27m; ext. H 0.36m). Bank along W side is largely reduced to scarp (Wth crest 2.1m, 5.6m base; int. H 0.44m; ext. H 1.13m). Though square in appearance the angles are rounded. Some nettles in interior, but mainly thistles. Nettles also around base of exterior of bank. Lot of stone evident in surviving banks, particularly where bank has been slightly denuded due to cattle, at N and S end of E side and E end of S side. Possible entrance along E side, obscured by fallen tree. No visible ext. fosse. Monument visible on aerial photograph (GSI 16-4-1974 S.633/4). On crest of broad, flat-topped hill, sloping slightly to E, under pasture, in undulating terrain. Enclosure (TS076-032001-) located 3m to NW. Irregularly shaped enclosure (diam. 34.5m N-S; 38.3m E-W) defined by earthen and stone bank (Wth 1.7-1.8m crest, 2.35-3.7m base; int. H 0.3-0.45m; ext. H 0.9-1.26m on N and S side respectively) and slight ext. fosse (Wth 1.5m; D 0.1). NW and SW angles are rounded. N side kinks in opposite the E bank of neighbouring moated site (TS076-032001-). The N bank, with high stone content, continues to run straight towards E. The bank in the E sector appears to have been levelled, slight rise indicating former line of bank. Remaining N, S and W sides are well defined by well-preserved bank with high stone content towards the crest, possibly the remains of a wall surmounting the earth and gravel bank. Lot of nettles in interior and concentration at ext. base of bank in E quadrant, possibly indicating former fosse. Depression outside S end of W sector probably result of small scale quarrying. No evidence of entrance but this may have been denuded on E side. Enclosure appears on aerial photograph (GSI 16-4-1974 S.633/4). On broad, flat-topped crest of hill, sloping slightly to E, under pasture, in undulating terrain. Enclosure identified on aerial photograph (GSI 16-4-1974, S.633/4), situated immediately SE of an enclosure (TS076-032003-). There is a slight rise in the field in this general area which may be the remains of the enclosure, however, edges are not defined and it is possible that this is a natural rise.
