In pasture, to the N, E and SE of the castle (TS061-100002-) and bawn (TS061-100003-) there are a series of humps, hollows and some more defined linear and occasional curvilinear banks. According to Simington (1931, vol. 1, 202) Kilconnell contains ‘a habitable Castle Bawne & Oarchard with a few Cottages, & the walls of a good dwelling house some few enclosures of quicksetts’. Earthworks are visible on aerial photography (CUCAP AYO 63, 10/07/1969) and according to Cahill (1982) ‘ground inspection identified very extensive remains of a village clustered around a large pond. Individual house sites and plots can be noted’. A curvilinear bank, defining a semi-circular area (c. 40m) ENE-WSW, has intermittent traces of a levelled bank WSW-ENE indicating an oval area. An L-shaped bank (L 20m ENE-WSW) has a short return (L 7m) to N at the W end and is to the ENE of the curvilinear bank. It is truncated by a linear bank (long-axis ENE-WSW) which cuts across the centre (L c. 38m). Another linear bank (L 42m) runs NW-SE and curves (c. 48m) at its SE end towards the field boundary, with a gap (Wth 6m) towards the SE end. It does not continue into the arable field to the E. There is an L-shaped bank (L c. 6m N-S) to the SW with a return of 5m at its S end to W. There is a pond to the W. A linear bank (L 30m) extends (long-axis N-S) from the NW of the pond and another bank (L 13m) extends from its W side. The former bank continues (long-axis N-S) for c. 6m and curves at its N end to the E for 7m and terminates at a low mound (dims. 4.5m E-W; 4m N-S). Another bank, curving for c. 6m and then straight for 16m, extends to the W. This bank continues N-S c. 12m and then extends 10m to W with a return c. 15m to N, indicating a rectangular area (dims. 18m N-S; 10m E-W) open to the N. The bank continues N-S for c. 34m and peters out c. 20m to WSW of the bawn. A bank (long-axis N-S) (Wth at top 2m; total Wth 4.25m; int. H 0.15m; ext. H 0.15m) extends from a point c. 20m to the WSW of the bawn and extends c. 90m to the N. It turns at a right-angle at the N end (L 44m) and continues on the same axis for 12m before turning to the NNE for minimum length of 100m, across the field, to E of the church (TS061-100001-). A linear depression (basal Wth 1.35m; overall Wth 4m; Dth 0.15m) flanks the E side of the bank and is probably for drainage purposes. Another bank, almost parallel, c. 11m to E, originates c. 5m to N of NW corner of bawn wall. This bank (Wth at top 1.5m; total Wth 4.65m; int.H 0.4m; ext. H 0.2m) extends c. 22m (long-axis c. NNW-SSE) and turns gently to NNE for 48m and continues into the field containing the church. It is possible that these latter banks define a former trackway. Other humps, hollows and intermittent banks to W and N of castle (TS061-100002-) and bawn (TS061-100003-) yet nothing discernible. In pasture, on the flat break of a N-facing slope. In pasture, on the flat break of a N-facing slope. The remains of a levelled sub-rectangular area (dims. 12m E-W; 9m N-S) are defined by a low bank (overall Wth 5.1m; Wth at top 1.75m; int. H 0.15m; ext. H 0.5m) best defined to E, W and the E end of the N side. A levelled scarp (Wth 5m; 0.1m) defines the S side and similarly the W end of the N side. There is sod-covered stone in the scarp at E. The interior is uneven and very gently depressed (Wth 4m; D 0.15m) within the centre. The church is depicted on the 1840 OS 6-inch map as a rectangular area (dims. c. 15m E-W; c. 8m N-S) and named 'Kilconnell Church (in ruins)'. O'Donovan (1840 vol. 1, 213) describes the remains of a church (dims. 40' x 18') defined by an upstanding fragment of the S wall (dims. L 9'; H 8') attached to the SW corner. According to White (1892, 15) this was the 'Protestant Parish Church after the Reformation'. The graveyard (TS061-100006-) is c. 18m to N. Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 26 August 2011 - TS061-100002: Castle - tower house, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CTS061-100002-. In an ungrazed area abutting a farmyard to the S and within the S side of a bawn (TS061-100003-). A tower house, at least four-stories high, composed of limestone rubble roughly coursed with cut and dressed quoins. The S wall has a double wall construction (inner T 0.6m; outer T 0.35m). Only the SW angle survives with a short return of the S wall (L 4.5m; T 0.95m) and the W wall (L c. 3.5m; T 1.1m) to parapet level. However, in the 19th century the tower house appears to have been intact as the OS letters (O'Flanagan 1930, vol. 1, 79-80 (214)) describe the castle as 'a square structure in good preservation and measures on the outside thirty six feet [11m] from east to west and thirty two feet [9.7m] from north to south. Its walls are built of limestone and well grouted; they are six feet six inches [2m] thick and not less than seventy feet [21m] in height. This castle had six floors, the second of which rested on a strong arch; the others were of wood. The windows are some rectangular and some pointed'. According to White (1892, 14), 'the upper storey of the castle is furnished with large windows'. There are the remains of a vault over the first floor springing from the S wall. Above this vault, at second-floor level, there is another spring arch but this appears to be an arcade or arched embrasure, possibly containing a window, the arch giving additional support to the wall above. At third-floor level there are the remains of a window embrasure in the W wall, one chamfered jamb of which survives. As this was the main floor of the tower house it is likely to have had a high ceiling, though the space between the second floor and the coping stone for the roof could have accommodated another floor and there are two mural chambers in the S wall at third and fourth-floor level. The coping stones are visible on the W face of the S wall and within the roof-space there is a doorway, only the W jamb and part of the sill and lintel survive, which gives access to a mural chamber in the S wall, of which little remains. There is a spiral stairs in the SW angle as there is a N-facing doorway in the W wall between the second and third floor-level which probably provided access to the second floor and another doorway at parapet level, giving access to the parapet. The stair also gives access to three mural chambers in the S wall, at third-floor, fourth-floor and parapet level. The stairs was lit by a narrow loop in the S wall between the second and third floor-level and a similar loop in the W wall at third-floor level. There is a circular bartizan with shot-holes on the angle supported by double corbels, with a single corbel at the angle. Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 26 August 2014 - TS061-100003: Bawn, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CTS061-100003-. In pasture on a N-facing slope. According to the Civil Survey (1654-6), 'Thomas Butler of Kylcon[n]ell Irish Papist' was proprietor in 1640' and the lands contained 'a habitable Castle [and] Bawne' (Simington 1931, vol. 1, 202). Bawn wall preserved to W and N, replaced by trackway and concrete wall to E and potential sod-covered ruins to S are densely overgrown. Walls are constructed of roughly hewn rectangular blocks of limestone laid in a rubble formation. Wall (L 52.7m; T 0.88m; int. H 1m; ext. H 1.45m) defines W side of bawn. Breached (Wth 3.2m) is off-centre to N and stones missing from the W elevation at the N end. The return of the N wall (L 33m; T 0.95m; int. H 1.2m; ext. H 2.18m) is best preserved except where replaced by a concrete wall (L 6m) and trackway (Wth 4.5m) at the E end. A slight base-batter is evident in the N wall and there is a drainage hole mid-way along at base. Occasional spy holes in wall (H c. 0.5m-1m) above present ground level. Spy holes have a splayed rectangular, lintelled embrasure on interior. Interior ground level is generally c. 0.45m higher in S-half and c. 1m higher in the N half. The castle (TS061-100002-) is within the S side. A trackway truncates the E perimeter of the interior and has breached the E end of the N wall According to White (1892, 14), there were the poorly preserved remains of a flanking tower (since fallen) at the NW angle of the bawn and there may have been similar structures at the other angles. A wooded area, which may be the former orchard, adjoins to S and is defined by a poorly preserved, collapsed stone wall to W. Wall is well preserved in places and breached in others defining the S side. Later portion of wall (long-axis ENE-WSW) with stile is located adjacent S-end of disused farmhouse, to SE of bawn. Further section of similar wall close to E, on same axis. These have vertical coping on top. No cut or inscribed stone evident in later walls, except a possible triangular masons mark on a stone incorporated into the W wall of the farmhouse at the NNW end. Within the centre of a bawn (TS061-100003-) and c. 10m from a tower house (TS061-100002-), in lush, ungrazed pasture. There is no visible trace at ground level, it was probably backfilled for safety. It is not known of locally. In 1935 an underground passage was uncovered which, when partially opened, revealed ‘a hole about 12 ft [3.6m] by 6 ft [1.8m], and about 6ft deep…The roof is arched like a bridge, and the width between the side walls is 4 or 5 ft [1.2-1.5m]; the mortar is very hard, and obviously old’ (NMI topographical files 22/04/1935). Another letter states the arch was ‘4 feet [1.2m] down made of long stones and mortar’ (NMI topographical files). No archaeological inspection was carried out at the time, however, the description suggests that this is a souterrain. In pasture, on a levelled-off area of a N-facing slope. Roughly rectangular area (dims. 33m N-S; 15.5m E-W) defined by a relatively modern, well built stone wall (average exterior H c. 1.5m; int. H c. 1.5-2m; T 0.45-0.5m). Stone stile on S side of wall for access into interior; some stones missing. The interior is densely overgrown with briars up to and over height of wall (int. H 1.5-2m). A rectangular plot within, off-centre to N, is defined by cast iron railing and obscured by mature conifer. An E-facing 19th-century headstone is visible to the W. There is a large crucifix mid-way along the S wall, facing N into the interior. The church (TS061-100001-) is c. 18m to the S. According to White (1892, 15), headstones are erected to Thomas Walsh in 1784 and John Fitzgerald in 1823.
