In an elevated position, NE of Cahir. The main house consists of a two-storey over basement three-bay, gable-ended with attic, chimney on each gable, house of late 18th-century date. The house is one room deep (wall T 0.6m) with a narrow stairs (Wth 0.8m). The rear W room has the earliest window, nine over six panes, others are two pane sash. According to Bence-Jones (1988, 267) the house is 'said to incorporate an earlier priest's house'. There is a smaller two-bay house with first-floor dormer windows, joined, at a slight recess, to E gable. It has low ceilings and wall T 0.6m. Added onto this in the 19th century is a projecting two-storey wing which contained a large drawing room and now partially incorporates the kitchen at ground-floor level. The house has been altered internally. No evidence of pre-18th-century date. According to present landowner the house was built by Quakers. On fairly flat ground in undulating terrain, in reclaimed pastureland, another possible enclosure (TS075-043002-) lies c. 40m to S. Enclosure identified as an irregular cropmark on aerial photograph (CUCAP July 1970 BDR 88). It is not visible at ground level. It was partially excavated in 1999 prior to the selection of a final route for the proposed Cahir Eastern Relief Road (Henry 2000, 284). A modern drainage ditch and furrows had disturbed 'a number of potential archaeological features including a circular cut, possible post-holes and a fine stone/cobble surface' (ibid.). A curving ditch, possibly the enclosing fosse, which contained extensive charcoal-flecking in the fills, was also uncovered though there were no datable finds (ibid.). It was not possible to conclusively establish relationships between the features uncovered during the testing and the two possible enclosures visible on the aerial photograph (ibid.). Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 26 August 2011 - TS075-043002: Enclosure, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CTS075-043002-. On fairly flat ground in undulating terrain, in reclaimed pastureland, another possible enclosure (TS075-043001-) lies c. 40m to N. Enclosure identified as a roughly circular cropmark on aerial photograph (CUCAP July 1970 BD7 88). It is not visible at ground level. This site was partially excavated in 1999 prior to the selection of the final route for the proposed Cahir Eastern Relief Road (Henry 2000, 284). Excavation revealed a linear ditch (Wth 1.5m; D 0.5m) on the NE edge of the possible enclosure which contained some charcoal (ibid.). Two small circular features which contained large quantities of charcoal (ibid.). A possible post-hole was identified to the NW of the wide linear ditch (ibid.). Along the S edge and just outside the southern circumference of the enclosure, further features were uncovered including a curved ditch (Wth 0.75m wide; D 0.35m deep) containing charcoal and small quantities of fragmented animal bone (ibid.). By virtue of the location of this feature it was impossible to establish its extent or function (ibid.). The other area excavated was just outside the confines of the enclosure (ibid.). A deep ditch, again of unknown width and length, was uncovered (ibid.). There was a series of three fills, which sealed a wall (ibid.). The drystone wall, 0.35m wide, extended across the length of the trench. The wall overlay two primary fills in the deep cut (ibid.). It was not possible to conclusively establish relationships between the features uncovered during the testing and the two possible enclosures visible on the aerial photograph (ibid.). Curvilinear cropmarks (overall diam. c. 100m) visible on satellite imagery (2021 Maxar Technologies, viewed May 2021), identified and reported by Jean-Charles Caillère. The southernmost cropmark may be part of an oval enclosure defined by a fosse, with an outer concentric fosse from SE-S-SSW, though this outer fosse widens towards the N and appears to join a roughly rectangular enclosure, aligned N-S. Within the possible oval enclosure there are a number of curvilinear cropmarks, but it is not clear how these all relate.
