Situated just off the crest of Knigh Hill on an E-facing slope. An oval area (diam. 27.4m N-S; 22.7m E-W) enclosed by an earth and stone bank (Wth 3.7m; int. H 0.33m; ext. H 0.7m) with gaps at S (Wth 1.8m) and SW (Wth 0.9m). There is a small area of quarrying immediately to the SE of the site. Inspected in 1977 and classified as ring-barrow (Healy 1979, 47). No internal mound visible. The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Tipperary. Vol. 1 - North Tipperary' compiled by Jean Farrelly and Caimin O'Brien (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2002). Situated on the SW-facing slope of Knigh Hill. A circular area (diam. 39m N-S; 40m E-W) defined by a bank (Wth 2.5m; int. H 1.84m; ext. H 0.62m) and fosse (Wth c. 3m). The concave interior slopes to the S. Along the E portion there is a steep drop (H 2m) to a wide, deep ravine between the site and the rise in slope. The bank is truncated at E and S and is quite denuded at N and there are gaps at SE (c. 2.5m) and N. The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Tipperary. Vol. 1 - North Tipperary' compiled by Jean Farrelly and Caimin O'Brien (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2002). Situated on the edge of the NW-SE ridge of Knigh Hill with a steep drop to NE. A roughly circular area (diam. 45m N-S) enclosed by a stone wall (Wth 5.4m; ext. H 1.4m) which has largely collapsed. There is no entrance feature visible, though Grace (1979, 10) has suggested it was in the SW quadrant. An L-shaped stone foundation in the interior was noted in an inspection of the site in 1985 (FitzPatrick 1985). The interior and parts of the enclosing wall are very overgrown with trees and scrub. A ruinous limekiln is located c. 4m SE of the site; stone from the cashel was possibly utilised in its construction. The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Tipperary. Vol. 1 - North Tipperary' compiled by Jean Farrelly and Caimin O'Brien (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2002). Situated in flat meadowland with a small wood to the W. A slightly irregular rectangular area (dims. 26m N-S; 29m E-W) enclosed by a low bank (Wth 1.7m; int. H 0.3m; ext. H 0.9m) on the N and W sides, a higher bank along E and S where it has been incorporated in the field boundaries, a deep, external fosse on the S side (Wth 2.8m; D 0.4m), and a shallow fosse elsewhere. The edge of the site is planted with a variety of mature trees, mainly ash and sycamore. It is unclear whether this is a habitation site or a copse. The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Tipperary. Vol. 1 - North Tipperary' compiled by Jean Farrelly and Caimin O'Brien (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2002). Situated on the crest of Knigh Hill in the centre of a hillfort (14:33/02). A mound of stones (basal diam. c. 20m N-S; 19.3m E-W) with quarried into in several places - at the top of the mound, at the E and S, and at the base of the N portion where limestone bedrock has been exposed. The cairn (H 2.35m) is not as steep at E where an irregular berm (Wth c. 2m) interrupts the otherwise steep fall. A low, flat-topped, circular mound (diam. 19m) is conjoined at the S. The sides slope gently towards the exterior, varying in height from 0.52m at E to 1.53m at S. The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Tipperary. Vol. 1 - North Tipperary' compiled by Jean Farrelly and Caimin O'Brien (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2002). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Encircling the base of Knigh Hill proper. This univallate hillfort, identified by Manning (1983, 48), is now largely levelled. It is described as a large circular area (diam. 230m) enclosed by a bank and external fosse, formerly best preserved at N and defined by field boundaries along the S and W (ibid.). The N portion has subsequently been reclaimed and the enclosing bank and fosse levelled. A possible trace of the fosse is visible at W. At the centre of the hillfort there is a cairn (TN014-033001-) with a conjoined mound. Geophysical survey (O'Driscoll 2012) has identified that Knigh hillfort is probably bivallate. The hillfort was recently described in the Atlas of Hillforts of Britain and Ireland as following; 'Multiple enclosure following natural contours, surrounding S summit of isolated steep dome-shaped hill surrounded by low-lying terrain. Hillfort overlooks Lough Eorna to E and Dromineer Bay is visible to W. Geophysical survey (O'Driscoll 2012) has identified that Knigh hillfort is probably bivallate. It has a total site foot print of 5.4ha. There are no recorded entrance features in either enclosing element. A cairn and conjoined mound are positioned at the centre of the hillfort. Geophysical survey has identified a number of small pit features distributed throughout the interior and two possible structures. The enclosing elements are levelled are and are only visible in aerial photography. The site was first identified by Manning (1983) and O'Driscoll surveyed the monument in 2012. Enclosing elements levelled and visible on aerial photography. Formerly best preserved at the N and defined by field boundary on S and W (Manning 1985, 48). It comprises a bank and external ditch. This was confirmed by geophysical survey (O'Driscoll 2012). Both first and second edition Ordnance Survey mapping suggest that the inner defences were partially incorporated into a field system at its SW, which is still present today. A possible second enclosing element was identified at the N, approximately 54m from the inner enclosing element (O'Driscoll 2012). Modern track overlying possible outer enclosing elements at SE and NE.' Situated on a S-facing slope of rising ground with nearby tower house to S. Possible moated site visible on aerial photograph (CUCAP, ATC 84) with nearby tower house (TN014-049002) to S. Described by FitzPatrick (1985, vol. 2, part 4, 18) as 'a large rectangular earthwork' (dims. 65m x 54m) with S, E and portion of the W bank surviving (H 0.5m; Wth 5m). The N boundary is obscured by a modern field boundary and there is a clearly distinguishable fosse (Wth c. 1m) outside the bank to the S and E (ibid.). Situated on the S-facing slope of a hill in pasture. A possible moated site (TN014-049001-) is located immediately N of the tower house and a circular enclosure lies S of it, though neither are visible above ground. The projecting NW angle tower and length of N wall (T 0.9m) are all that survive of this limestone tower house. The foundations of the remainder can be followed to some extent. The full S length of the tower house is c. 9.1m and the W wall is c. 12m long. The angle tower is four storeys high. It has the remains of a barrel vault over the first floor and two garderobes in the N wall at first-floor level. Surviving fenestration in the angle tower consists of one simple slit, one ogee-headed and one flat-headed window. There is no evidence of a doorway. FitzPatrick (1985, vol. 2, part 4, 13-24) notes that the tower house was built on an earthen mound, best preserved in the SE and SW quadrants, the latter being c. 1.8m above external ground level. Portion of a fosse (Wth 3m) survives around the base of the mound with a causeway at SSW. The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Tipperary. Situated on the S-facing slope of a hill in pastureland. A roughly circular enclosure running S from the tower house depicted on an aerial photograph taken in 1974 (CUCAP, ATC 84). This site may be related to the mound and fosse described with the tower house (TN014-049002). Not visible at ground level. The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Tipperary. Vol. 1 - North Tipperary' compiled by Jean Farrelly and Caimin O'Brien (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2002). Situated on a slight rise in pastureland, the church is at the N end of a roughly rectangular graveyard (TN014-051002). It is listed in the ecclesiastical taxation of the Diocese of Killaloe in 1302 (CDI, vol. 5, 302) and the Royal Visitation of 1615 described the church as 'ruined with no chancell' (Murphy 1914, 219). It is built of roughly coursed limestone rubble (dims. 9.15m N-S; 18m E-W; wall T 0.85m). The E window is of limestone with trefoil-pointed tracery and hood-moulding, all with punch dressing. The original doorway in the N wall has been much altered during a FÁS scheme. The entrance (Wth 0.9m) in the W end of the S wall has been rebuilt but is probably original (O'Flanagan 1930, vol. 2, 18). There is a small rectangular window in the W gable within a stepped rectangular embrasure. The E end of the N wall has a limestone ogee-headed window and near the E gable in the S wall there is a round-headed single-light window with punch dressing. The priest's quarter in the W end was divided from the church by a partition wall (T 0.9m) which provides a two-storey chamber 2.4m wide. This chamber was apparently later used as a burial place for 'the un-Irish families of Fletcher and Minnit' (O'Flanagan 1930, vol. 2, 18). The door is chamfered externally and has drafting which appears to be of late sixteenth-century date. The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Tipperary. Vol. 1 - North Tipperary' compiled by Jean Farrelly and Caimin O'Brien (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2002). Situated on a slight rise in pastureland, the church (TN014-051001) is at the N end of a roughly rectangular graveyard (int. dims. 60m N-S ; 53m E-W) defined by a limestone wall containing 18th and 19th century memorials. It is listed in the ecclesiastical taxation of the Diocese of Killaloe in 1302 (CDI, vol. 5, 302) and the Royal Visitation of 1615 described the church as 'ruined with no chancell' (Murphy 1914, 219). Situated in a relatively low-lying position with ground rising gradually to the NW and S. A poorly preserved mound of gravel and clay which has been greatly altered by quarrying. It survives to a height of c. 2m and has a maximum diameter of c. 26m. The centre of the site has been completely quarried out, with an entrance cut through the mound to N and one to S. All that remains is the outer edge at the E and W, however, this could be augmented by spoil material which has been pushed outwards. The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Tipperary. Vol. 1 - North Tipperary' compiled by Jean Farrelly and Caimin O'Brien (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2002). Located on a gradual E-facing slope in undulating pastureland with a bowl-barrow (TN014-052) located c. 30m to the N. The ground to the N and E is liable to flood. A roughly rectangular area (dims. 33.7m N-S; 30m E-W) defined by an earthen bank (Wth 1.5m; ext. H 0.53m) and by an outer fosse (Wth 2.2m) in the N quadrant. The bank in the S and E quadrants is incorporated into the field bank which has been augmented by stone as a result of field clearance. Compiled by: Caimin O'Brien.
