On summit of Knockillon Hill, just below 402 ft. trig. stat. to SW. Mound barrow (TS075-017001-) situated immediately to the NW. Only the S half of this enclosure survives. The monument is depicted as an oval enclosure on the 1st (1840) ed. OS 6-inch map but only the S portion is indicated on the 2nd (1901-05) ed. The grass-covered bank (Wth 2.3m crest, 4.9m base; int. H 0.87m; ext. H 0.5-1.28m) is very compact, composed of clay and gravel. The N half of the enclosure appears to have been quarried out. It was heavily overgrown with nettles at time of inspection. The bank in the W quadrant is 1.32m H above the depression which separates the enclosure and the mound barrow. On a S-facing slope in undulating pasture. Monument appears almost square on an aerial photograph (CUCAP 13 July 1966 AOZ 97), however is quite circular on the ground (diam. 33.7m N-S; 31.4m E-W) and is also depicted as being circular on the 1st (1840) ed. and 2nd (1901-05) ed. OS 6-inch map. Ringfort is defined by an inner bank, largely reduced to scarp (Wth 5.4m; int. H 0.35m; ext. 0.47m); U-shaped fosse (Wth 2.9m; D 1.66m) and outer bank (Wth 2.8m crest, 7.5m base; ext. H 0.75m). In the N quadrant the outer bank is very broad and flat, appearing to have been partially levelled. According to the landowner the fosse has been built up with earth in SE and W quadrant, originally the fosse was much deeper. Entrance (Wth 3.1m) in S quadrant, with banks slightly offset. It is defined by a limestone boulder (dims. 1.1m L x 0.6m T x 0.67m H) on the E side of the inner bank, with a flat face to the entrance. There is a smaller boulder (dims. 0.66m L x 0.56m D x 0.35m H) on the W side to outer face of outer bank, it appears to have been displaced slightly but is embedded, with flat face lining the entrance. Sileage dumped on former outer bank in the S quadrant. This section of the bank is not depicted on the 2nd ed. OS 6-inch map. In the N quadrant there is a break in the inner bank and a causeway over the fosse, probably infill as there is no break in the outer bank. The outer bank is best preserved in E quadrant. The inner bank is largely reduced to scarp. There are stones visible in the bank construction. In the Civil Survey (1654-6) Knockgraffon is described as having 'two decayed castles (the Walls standing, & a stone house habitable many small Cottages an Oarchard & garden...' (Simington 1931, vol.1, 230). No trace of the settlement survives, however it is likely to have been located between or in the vicinity of the motte and bailey (TS075-019001-) and the 13th-century church (TS075-019003-). The motte at Knockgraffon was erected in 1192, the manor having been granted to Philip of Worchester (Orpen 1909, 276). In 1202 King John ordered Worchester to deliver the ‘the Castrum de Cnocgrafon’ to William de Braose, however, in 1215 Knockgraffon was returned to Worchester (ibid.). In 1225 this grant was confirmed to William of Worcester, Philip’s nephew (ibid.). In the Calendar of Ormond Deeds the rental of burgages in 1274 is given as ‘nineteen marks, one pound of pepper, two pounds of cumin’(Curtis 1932, vol. 1, 78). The manor of Knockgraffon was, after the death of John de Bermingham, Earl of Louth, in 1329, committed to the custody of James, Earl of Ormond, in right of his liberty by writ of June 11, 1333 (Curtis 1935-7, 54). A small scale excavation in 1995 c. 100m N of the church revealed a number of pits, a ditch, two firespots and traces of one or two wicker buildings suggestive of settlement, potentially medieval (Pollock 1996, 82). There were also a number of parallel linear features filled with an old soil indicative of medieval/early post-medieval cultivation (ibid.). Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 1 April 2014 - TS075-019001: Castle - motte and bailey, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CTS075-019001-. The motte at Knockgraffon is mentioned in numerous medieval sources, it was built in 1192 when the Four Masters record that the English of Leinster made an expedition against Donnell O'Brien, king of North Munster, and ‘in the course of their expedition erected the castles of Knockgraffon and Kilfeakle’ (Orpen 1909, 276). In August, 1202, King John ordered Philip of Worcester to deliver to William de Braose ‘the Castrum de Cnocgrafon’, however, in 1215, Knockgraffon is returned to Philip of Worcester (ibid.). This grant was substantially confirmed by Henry III, in 1225, to William of Worcester, Philip's nephew (ibid.). Situated overlooking a flat plain with the River Suir flowing c. 500m to the W. There are extensive views to the N, E and W. There is a later tower house (TS075-019002-) within the bailey at the base of the motte to the N; a church and graveyard (TS075-019003-) and Knockgraffon tower house (TS075-076----) to the NE. The motte was built on top of a natural hill with bailey at base of motte to the NW. On the summit of the motte (dims. 12.6m N-S; 16.5m E-W; H 14.6m), at the higher W end, there are the remains of a walled structure (dims. 5.2m N-S; 7.5m E-W) with denuded grass-covered walls (H 0.55-0.96m). There are a lot of nettles in the centre of the E quadrant and brambles growing around the edge. On the less steep N side of the motte a path has been worn up to the lower summit, all the other sides are practically sheer. There is quite a substantial fosse at the base of the motte in SW quadrant. On the 2nd (1901-05) ed. OS 6-inch map a bank is depicted extending around the base of the motte from ESE-S-SW and it was partly incorporated in a field bank which ran roughly E-W S of the motte and bailey. This bank is no longer evident and may have been used to fill a fosse, which is now only evident in the SW. The area of the fosse and outer bank now appears as a flat ledge around the motte before the hill slopes naturally downwards. The roughly rectangular bailey (diam. 57.3m NE-SW; 59m NW-SE) is defined by a stoney bank (Wth crest 1.7m, base 10m; int. H 0.35m; ext. H 5.6m) which is not very high above the interior but falls steeply to the exterior; a narrow, deep fosse SW of motte and bailey (Wth 4.5m; D 4.5m) and an outer stoney bank (Wth crest 2m, base 7.4m; H above ext. 2.1m) with remains of an internal stone revettment. The bank peters out in the SW quadrant. The interior slopes gradually to the NW. Within the SE quadrant of the bailey, at the base of the motte, there are remains of a rectangular structure (diam. 15.8m NE-SW; 9.4m NW-SE) defined by an earthen bank (Wth crest 1.4m, base 3.6m; int. H 0.4m; ext. H 0.5m) on its NW and SW sides, by base of motte to SE and by a scarp to NE. This structure was noted by Lyons (1950, 266-8) along with other features and sub-divisions within the bailey which were not visible at time of inspection, possibly due to lush vegetation. Orpen (1909, 275) mentions that there are extensive stone foundations in the bailey. At the edge of the E quadrant of the bailey of Knockgraffon motte and bailey (TS075-19001-), with a church (TS075-19003-) 190m to the NNE. The Civil Survey (1654-6) refers to two castles within the parish of Knockgraffon, both described as 'decayed castles (the Walls standing...' and 'Knockgraffond' was under the proprietorship of a number of owners including 'James Earle of Ormond. Sir Wm. Fenton of Michellstowne in ye County of Corke; Richard Butler of Ballynakill Richard Bourke of Knocgraffond Irish Papists' (Simington 1931, vol.1, 230). In the OS Letters of 1840 the ‘east and south walls are destroyed but its north wall remains to a height of about fifteen feet [4.5m] and its west wall to a height of twenty feet [6m]. The north wall is only eleven feet ten inches [3.6m] in length on the inside and the west wall thirteen feet [c. 4m]; they differ in thickness, the west wall being only four feet thick [1.2m] and the north wall six feet [1.8m]’ (O’Flanagan 1930, vol. 1, 36 (93-4)). Orpen (1909, 275-6) describes it as 'a small rectangular tower ... about 10 by 12 feet [3m x 3.6m] ...[with] corbels to support a floor above'. The tower house (int. dims. 3.5m E-W; E wall 1.4m T; W wall 1.25m T) is in a poor state of repair, with only the N and W walls and the N end of the E wall standing, surviving up to second-floor level, heavily overgrown with ivy. It was built of limestone and occasional sandstone rubble, randomly coursed, and roughly harled externally. There is an external base-batter on the N wall (H 2.5m; Wth c. 0.3m). At ground-floor level the W wall has a flat-headed single light within a flat-headed embrasure which splays slightly internally, some render surviving on the splay. Ivy obscures any features above, however, a photograph taken in 1952 shows the building without ivy and there appears to be another loop at first-floor level, slightly S of the one below (Cahill 1982, unpublished MA thesis). There are no features in the N wall at ground-floor level apart from a garderobe chute which exits at the W end. The E wall has mostly collapsed, and the remaining length is ivy covered. On a natural rise overlooking the Suir river valley to the W, Knockgraffon motte and bailey (TS075-019001-) is visible to the W. In the Ecclesiastical Taxation (temp. Ed. I) the rectory of Knockgraffon was valued at the high annual rate of 20 marks (Orpen 1909, 276). According to the OS Letters the church was 'remodelled and much disfigured since the Reformation, a part of it having been fitted for Protestant Service' (O'Flanagan 1930, vol.1, 36). A late 18th-century sketch by Beranger shows a roof over the eastern end of the nave (Harbison 1991, 77). The nave (int. dims. 8.2m x 26.47m) and chancel (int. dims. 6.8m x 6.7m) church, aligned E-W, is constructed of limestone and sandstone rubble, randomly coursed with base-batter at E, an external string-course and possible decorative buttresses, one partially surviving at the NE angle. The E gable has evidence of three building phases. Initially there were two lancet windows which were then partially destroyed by the insertion of a large, round-headed 13th-century window with moulded surrounds. The inner order consists of a roll-moulding with fillet, the outer roll-moulding has moulded capitals with water-hold bases. This window rests on a roll-moulded string-course with fillet and there is evidence of tracery on the N and S sides of the window. However, the lights have been removed and the window blocked with the insertion of a 15th-century window. This latter window consists of a cinque-foil cusped-ogee window, two over two, with hollow spandrels and external hood-moulding with drop-labels, within a stone frame which is chamfered externally. At the SE angle, below the lowest coping stone, there is a corbel projecting S with an exhibitionist figure (TS075-019005-), and one course below this there is another corbel projecting E from which a carved figure is emerging (TS075-019006-). In the 15th-century an inner wall was built up against the N and S wall of the chancel to support a stone vault, since collapsed. A round-headed sedilla in the centre of the S wall of the chancel blocks a 13th-century recess, the trefoil head of which is visible where some masonry has collapsed. Under a window at the E end of the S wall there is a piscina with a scalloped basin. Immediately N of the chancel there is a possible sacristy, its E wall being flush with, and keyed into the base of, the E gable of chancel. It probably dates from the 15th-century phase of rebuilding. The N and W walls of this building do not survive and the S wall, which is also the N wall of the chancel, does not survive above 0.9m. According to the OS Letters this building measured L 23'6-inch [7.15m] x Wth 15' [4.57m] (O'Flanagan 1930, vol.1, 37). The pointed chancel arch (L 1.75m; Wth 4.74m) is built of well-cut sandstone voussoirs, with the remains of a stair running up within the thickness of the N wall above the arch. Slots on the W, inner, face of both sides of the arch indicate where a former rood screen was located. The nave was narrowed (wall Wth 0.77m), and probably shortened, in the post-Reformation period, probably in the 17th or early 18th century. It was lit by long pointed windows, the embrasures of two of which survive in the S wall as well as one blocked-up window at the E end of the N wall. There is also a shallow round-arched recess between the two embrasures in the S wall. The original nave was wider, with evidence of the earlier wall (Wth 1.2m) running along the N side and fragments still visible on the S side. The original W gable of the nave, with adjoining side walls, is still standing, showing evidence for three windows in the W gable and an original window at the W end of the S wall. There is no surviving doorway into the nave, with large breaks in masonry in both N and S walls. A graveslab dating to 1500 AD (TS075-019006-) was located within the chancel, opposite an early 18th-century gravestone, dated 1711, which lay in a horizontal position near the W wall of the chancel (O'Flanagan 1930, vol.1, 37). Portion of another graveslab (TS075-019007-) dated 1500 or 1540 AD lies in the interior at the base of the S wall of the chancel. There are two large limestone slabs resting against the E wall of the chancel, these appear to have been united and would have formed a large single slab (L 2.09m; Wth 1.06m; T 0.18m) with a small chamfer (Wth 0.02m) around the edge and a margin defined by a groove on the upper surface. This may be an altar table. Lying among stone fragments at the base of a tomb niche in the S wall of the chancel of Knockgraffon church (TS075-019002-). Only a portion of the limestone slab is visible (L 0.7m; max. Wth 0.65m; Wth of upper surface 0.55m; T 0.23-0.28m) with two original edges, one being chamfered (Wth 0.09m) while the other upper edge is not. The surface is badly worn. There is an inscription on the chamfer in latin, in black letter script, which reads, 'Hic jacet Dominus'. The rest of the slab was visible when visited by O'Donovan (O'Flanagan 1930, vol. 1, 37 (97)) who described it as being 'much mutilated' and transcribed it as 'Hic jacet Dominus Matheus Kent quondam Rector de Knoccrafon, A.D. M CCCCC' which translates as 'Here lies Lord Matthew Kent formerly rector of Knockgraffon A.D. 1500'. Another transcription by Quinn (1900, vol. 4, 117) is roughly the same, though it appears to be more accurate than O'Donovan's and he gives the date as 1540. On a SW-facing slope in undulating terrain, in the E corner of the garden of the house which was built in the 1970s and partially on the adjacent roadway to the NE. Knockgraffon tower house (TS075-076----) is located c. 50m to the ENE. The house was built by John Godfrey, an English officer who was granted the land in reward for services in the 1641 Rising (De Breffny and Ffolliott 1975, 55). In 1665 he was taxed for five hearths at Knockgraffon and for six hearths in 1666-7 (ibid., 1975, 55). According to De Breffny and ffolliott the house was two-storey and double-pile with high gables and chimneys and had a garderobe jutting out on corbels from one of the back corners (ibid. 1975, 55). However the photographic, illustrative and other references suggest it was in fact a single pile. This is probably the same house referred to in the Civil Survey 1654-56 (Simington 1931, vol.1, 158) as 'a slate house'. Du Noyer's sketch (1840 vol. 2, 43(i) unpublished RSAI) depicts this house with a large projecting chimney at the NE gable nearest the tower house and a chimney at the apex of the SW gable. The nearest projecting chimney is shouldered with a single-light above it. Waterman (1961, 254) also describes the house as a 'simple oblong' with 'massive external chimney-projections at the gable-ends' and gives the dimensions as 'about 60 ft. [c. 18m] x 21 ft. [6.4m]' and mentions there there was evidence within the outer door for a rising gate (ibid., 257). The house was levelled in 1973 and stone from the 17th-century house was used in the foundations of adjacent new house and also spread around the neighbouring fields. An early 17th-century four-storey tower house with attic (ext. dims. 9m NE-SW; 11.55m NW-SE; wall T 2.2m) with intact gables on the SE and NW walls, it is constructed of limestone rubble, randomly coursed, with well-cut quoins, the lower of sandstone, the upper of limestone, a base-batter (H 2.1m; Wth 0.25m) and good survival of external render. It is defended by a number of gun-loops, both circular and horizontal, most of which are only visible externally. All floors were wooden and have not survived. The tower house was modified at a later stage, possibly in the 18th century, when many of the windows were broken-out and enlarged. The well-preserved internal plaster probably dates to this second phase. The tower house is entered through a pointed doorway, with yett-holes on either side, at the E end of the SE wall. This leads into a small lobby area, the N part of which is broken out, and to E there is a segmental-headed recess. The roof of the lobby has partially collapsed, destroying traces of a possible murder-hole. A doorway to the S led to a second lobby, also broken out, and presumably this led into either the ground-floor chamber or via a short mural passage to the mural stairs which rises along the SW wall and turns in the W angle at second-floor level. The ground floor was lit by windows in the NW, NE and SW walls but only the round-headed single-light in the NW wall survives. The first floor was entered from the mural stair in the SW wall. It was lit by four windows, two of which, in the NW and SE walls, are broken out, while single-light, ogee-headed windows survive in the NE and SW walls. There is a fireplace and wall cupboard in the NE wall and a garderobe chamber in the E angle, lit by single-lights in the N and E walls, either side of the corner angle. The second floor was entered from the mural stairs at the W end of the SW wall. It was lit by two windows, both broken out, in the NW and SE walls, the latter with a wall cupboard in each side of its inner embrasure. There is a fireplace at the S end of the SW wall. At the W end of the NW wall the impressions of shelves have been left in the plaster. The third floor was entered from the mural stairs at the W angle, with the doorway supported on a squinch. It was lit by three windows, all broken-out, in the NW, NE and SE walls. Two doorways, one at either end of the SW wall, lead to inaccessible mural chambers. The S chamber is lit by a narrow loop with slop-stone beneath. A third mural chamber, the garderobe, is accessed from the E side of the embrasure of the SE window. The S side contains a small wall cupboard. There is a large central fireplace in the NE wall which is inscribed with the date 1603 within a scroll-plaque. The fireplace has limestone chamfered surrounds and the lintel is joggle-jointed with skew-backs on either side supported on large corbels. The mural stairs above first-floor level is broken out and access to attic level is not visible. The mural stairs is lit by narrow single-lights, and at first-floor level the window has a slop-stone at its base and gun-loops on either side. The attic was lit by a flat-headed two-light window in the NW and SE walls, had a central fireplace in the SW wall and a doorway at the E end of the SE wall giving access to a box machicolation defending the main ground-floor entrance. A large chimney stack surmounts both the NE and SW walls. There are angle machicolations at both N and S angles, the former, which also contains two circular gun-loops, being the better preserved. Water-spouts at parapet level project out from the NE and SW wall. An 18th-century antiquarian sketch of Knockgraffon depicts this tower house with a tall gabled building adjoining the SW face (Harbison 1991, 76-7). This building has no windows in its SE and SW face but there is a small chimney at the apex of the SW gable, however, the accuracy of the depiction is questionable based on the simplistic treatment of the tower house.
