In improved pasture, near top of NW-facing slope, with a pond to the SW and an old stream bed to S. Fulachta fia (TS063-075----, TS063-076---- and TS063-077----) are located c. 70m to S and 90m and 100m to the SSW respectively. A circular area (dims. 42m N-S; 40m E-W) defined by scarp (Wth 2.2m; H 1.8m) which is partially obscured by overgrowth, a substantial and waterlogged intervening fosse (basal Wth 4.5m; overall Wth 9.45m; D 1.8m) and a large intervening bank (Wth at top 6.5m; overall Wth 12.4m; int. H 2.15m; ext. H 2.2m) has a sloping top (H 0.25m) which tilts inwards. The top of the bank in the SW sector appears to be slightly modified to form a possible walkway defined by an inner and outer bank. In the SE and SW sectors the external face of the bank is badly eroded and at NNE the wide bank opens out to form an L-shaped bailey (L 15m c. N-S) with a long return (L c. 18m) c. E-W defined by a much narrower bank on either side. The bank is eroded and reduced to scarp along the N side with an outer fosse (basal Wth 2.5m; overall Wth 11.15m; D 1m). The interior is obscured by dense overgrowth. Within a disused quarried which has been reclaimined and is currently under pasture. According to the Civil Survey (1654-6), the proprietor in 1640 of 'The Manor castle Towne & lands of Drangan' was 'James, Lord Barron of Dunboyne Irish Papist' in which year it was occupied 'by his Mother Ellan Lady Dowager of Dunboyne' and 'The sd lands hath on them (besides the Cheife & principall Castle) a Mansion house tyled over with slate, & a short butt of a Castle thatched with other decaying thatcht houses within the Bawne' (Simington 1930, vol. 1, 160). According to OSL (O'Flanagan 1930, vol. 1, 74) there '…stood on a rock the Castle of Drangan …. It had a bawn attached to it, as appears from fragments of outer walls still visible'. The 1st (1840) ed. OS 6-inch map depicts a rectangular bawn (dims. c. 57m N-S x c. 40m E-W) with a lime kiln at the SW corner possibly re-using a circular turret, with a quarried out rectangular feature in the SE corner perhaps indicating the site of the keep or fortified house. According to local tradition stone from the castle was used in the construction of the parish church in Drangan in 1847 (Franc Myles pers. comm. 25 March 2010). Prior to quarrying the bawn is likely to have been situated on a high conspicuous rock outcrop. The rock face of the quarry is c. 20-25m to the W and N and there is a steep natural fall of ground c. 25m to E down to river. The N side of the quarry is delineated by the remains of a roughly coursed limestone wall (L 10m; H c. 0.75m), bonded with lime mortar, which may be associated with the castle (TS063-015002-) or associated buildings (TS063-015001-) or bawn. The E end of this wall is obscured for c. 2m by dense vegetation. The rubble stone wall (L c. 14m) sitting on top of the quarried rock face continues toward the W end, though the facing has fallen out in places. Quarrying activities encompassing this area make it difficult to decipher the purpose of this wall. An oval depression (dims. 22m N-S; 18m E-W) has been quarried out immediately N of the wall, with quarry spoil to SW. Apart from these fragmentary walls there is no visible trace above ground of the bawn. In improved pasture and disused quarried area overlooking river valley to N and E. Prior to quarrying, castle was situated on a high conspicuous rock outcrop. The Civil Survey (1654-6) records that the proprietor in 1640 of 'The Manor castle Towne & lands of Drangan' was 'James, Lord Barron of Dunboyne Irish Papist' in which year it was occupied 'by his Mother Ellan Lady Dowager of Dunboyne' and 'The sd lands hath on them (besides the Cheife & principall Castle) a Mansion house tyled over with slate, & a short butt of a Castle thatched with other decaying thatcht houses within the Bawne' (Simington 1930, vol. 1, 160). The Ordnance Survey Letters mention that there '…stood on a rock the Castle of Drangan, but only ten feet [3m] of the east wall of it remains to the height of about thirty five feet [10.6m]. Even the foundations of the other walls are not traceable, so that the extent of the building cannot now be ascertained. The wall remaining is six feet [1.8m] thick and built of limestone well grouted. ... It is said that this was a strong building and that it belonged to the Butlers' (O'Flanagan 1930, vol. 1, 74). According to Brennan (1854-55, 214-215) the castle belonged to the Dunboyne family with the last resident being Colonel Butler who lived there in the early 1700s. Brennan (ibid) states, 'the last remaining wing of the building fell fifteen years since', indicating that it fell shortly after it was recorded by the OS in the early 1840s. The N side of quarry is delineated by the remains of a roughly coursed limestone wall (L 10m; H c. 0.75m), bonded with lime mortar, which may be associated with the castle or associated buildings (TS063-015001-) or bawn (TS063-015001-). Large drainage stones which have been re-used as headstones in the nearby graveyard (TS063-016003-) of the medieval church (TS063-016001-) of Drangan, c. 160m to the SSW, may have come from Drangan Castle.
