In level wet pasture. Circular raised area (diam. c. 20m) defined by an internal earthen bank (overall Wth c. 4.5m; Wth at top c. 1m; int. H c. 0.2m; ext. H c. 1.6m) with an external fosse. An E-W orientated modern field bank links to the bank at E. From S-N the fosse has been re-cut as a field drain that is silted up S-W and freshly cleaned (Wth at top 3m; D 1.4m) W-N. Slight traces of the fosse are visible N-S. An E-W orientated modern field drain links to the re-cut fosse at W. The original entrance is not recognisable. The interior is level and densely overgrown with bushes and briars. In a coniferous forestry plantation, enclosed by a buffer zone (min. 20m). The monument is almost completely overgrown with dense briars and only the E quadrant is visible. This quadrant is defined by a bank (Wth 3.2m; int. H 0.35m; ext. H 0.65m). It is depicted on the 1904 edition OS 6-inch map as a circular mound (map diam. c. 10-13m). Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 26 August 2011 - TS059-064001: Enclosure, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CTS059-064001-. In the SMR (1992) and the RMP (1997) this record was incorrectly classified as a church and graveyard. The church and graveyard refer to that at Kyle (TS059-090----; TS059-090001-). The record has been re-classified as an enclosure. It is located in undulating pasture. There are old stream and drainage channels in the field, emphasised by the growth of flag irises. An oval area (dims. c. 28m NE-SW; c. 19m NW-SE) defined by a bank (Wth 4.5m; int. H 0.25m; ext. H 0.7m), fosse (Wth 5.75m; D 0.2m) and outer bank (Wth 4.65m; int. H 0.2m; ext. H 0.15m). The bank is in the NW quadrant and is reduced to scarp (Wth 1.3m; H 1.05m) at the WNW but is not seen elsewhere due to the dense growth of briars and whitethorn. The fosse survives from NW-NNE and is traceable at the WSW. The outer bank is visible in the NNW-N and WNW. A drain (Wth 3m; long-axis NE-SW) truncates the monument across the SE sector. A possible entrance (Wth c. 8m) at the W has a ramp up into the interior. A breach (Wth 10m) at the NE may be modern. There is a scarp (Wth 1.2m; H 0.1m) running E-W across the N half of the grass-covered interior. The perimeter is obscured by a dense thicket of briars. In improved level pasture to N, though poorly drained to the S. Identified as a sub-circular enclosure on an aerial photograph (R.439/8, 16/04/1974) and also partially visible on an ASI aerial photograph (ASIAP (117)13, [n.d.]). A sub-circular area (overall dims. 37m N-S; 34m E-W) defined by the remains of a low bank (Wth 3.8m; int. H 0.15m; ext. H 0.25m) from N-NE, largely reduced to scarp (Wth 1.2-1.6m; H 0.1-0.2) and an external fosse (Wth 3.4-4.4m; D 0.07-0.15m) visible from W-NE. The scarp is quite faint from SE-SSW and a slightly more pronounced from W-N. The interior is grass covered and uneven. The monument is truncated by a field boundary running N-S across the E sector and by a townland boundary (Wth 3m) running E-W across the S sector. On top of a low natural hillock, in undulating terrain, partially under pasture and partially in the grounds of a bungalow, at the S boundary. The bungalow lies c. 15m N of the location of the church. The 1840 OS Letters (O'Flanagan 1930 vol. 1, 8) describe the church at Kyle as consisting of the 'foundations of the walls' and the 'building was forty eight feet [14.6m] long and twenty three feet [7m] broad but nothing remains to point out its age'. According to White (1892, 29) 'The bounds of the Church and Church yard may be distinctly traced, and there are traces of burials, large stones being at the heads of graves; but the use of the place as a cemetery seems to have been long abandoned and the cattle of the occupier of the adjoining land have the site of the church and churchyard for pasture'. There is no visible trace of this church above ground. The boundary fence between the bungalow and its plot and the adjacent field to the S appear to be on the site of the church. There is a small grove of trees at the E end of this fence, adjacent to the road, which according to the owner, was planted on the location of the church and graveyard (TS059-060001-) and children's burial ground (TS059-090002-). A parcel is the land of a title, not an address. The owner's name is in the Land Registry of Tailte Éireann: a copy of the folio can be ordered on landdirect.ie, for a fee; this site names no owner. A price is the price recorded for a past sale, not a valuation.
