The Civil Survey (1654-6) describes the settlement assoicated with the tower house (TS055-065001-) at Lismalin as 'Upon the sd lands stands a good castle with a bawne & twelve cabbins' (Simington 1931, vol. 1, 123). This settlement is not visible at ground level. The precise location and extent of the settlement associated with Lismalin tower house is unknown. Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of revised upload: 15 September 2015 - TS055-065001: Castle - tower house, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CTS055-065001-. On top of a low rock outcrop on a N-facing slope of rising ground in an upland area with good extensive views from W through N to E, with higher ground to S and a small stream to W. Remains of a bawn (TS055-065003-) are visible to the E and N of the tower house, but elsewhere the bawn wall no longer survives. The manor was held by the Butlers since the early 14th century. Described in the Civil Survey (1654-6) as a 'good castle with bawne & twelve cabbins' which had been 'lately repaired at the states charge', with Pierce (Butler) Lord Viscount of Ikerryn listed as proprietor in 1640 (Simington 1931, vol. 1, 123). Elsewhere in the survey it is described as 'inhabited with a strong bawne repayred at the states charge' (Simington 1931, vol.1, 101). The OS Letters describe it as a 'square castle measuring twenty eight feet six inches [8.7m] by fifteen feet seven inches [4.85m] on the inside, with walls seven feet two inches [2.2m] thick and about forty feet high [12m]. The doorway was on the north side and constructed, as usual with castles in this district, of cut limestone. It had three floors, all of wood and none supported by a stone arch', (O'Flanagan 1930, vol. 1, 152-3). The tower house (ext. dims. 12.85m N-S x 8.65m E-W; wall T 2.1m) which survives to three storeys high, is built of roughly coursed sandstone and limestone rubble, with a base-batter (H 3m) and block and start limestone quoins, which have been robbed out at ground-floor level on the SW angle. 19th-century outhouses are built up against the external N and E faces of the tower house and later farmyard walls run from the centre of the W wall and the SE angle. A later doorway of 18th/19th-century date has been inserted in the centre of the S wall at ground-floor level, while the original doorway in the centre of the N wall is now blocked. It originally led into a destroyed lobby which accessed the spiral stairs in the NE angle and the main ground-floor chamber to S. The chamber was lit by single-light, round-headed windows set in the centre of the W, S and E walls. The S window has been replaced by the later doorway insertion. The W window was constructed with fine punch-dressed stonework, of late 16th/early 17th-century date, and set into a segmental-arched embrasure with evidence of wicker-centring visible on the underside of the embrasure arch. All upper floors were wooden, carried on floor joists set into the thickness of the wall, later replaced by machine cut floor joists of 18th/19th-century date. They are now inaccessible due to the ruined condition of the spiral stairs. A partially destroyed garderobe chute is visible on the internal face of the W wall, near the NW angle of the tower. On the second floor, a chamber in the SW angle of the tower, accessed from the main chamber, has a partially destroyed ventilator visible in the external face. Described in the Civil Survey (1654-6) as a 'good castle with bawne & twelve cabbins' which had been 'lately repaired at the states charge' (Simington 1931, vol. 1, 123). Pierce (Butler) Lord Viscount of Ikerryn is listed as proprietor in 1640 (ibid.). According to the survey the castle of Lismalin was 'inhabited with a strong bawne repayred at the states charge' (ibid., 101). Situated atop low rock outcrop on a N-facing slope of rising ground in upland area with good extensive views from W through N to E, higher ground to S, small streame to W. Remains of bawn (approx. ext. dims. 46m N-S; 40m E-W; wall T 0.85m) are visible to the N and E of the tower house (TS055-065001-), elsewhere the bawn wall no longer survives. Two-storey farmhouse (ext. dims. 6.5m N-S; 13m E-W) of 17th/18th-century date built into NE angle of bawn utilising the N wall of the bawn as the wall of the farmhouse, N wall of bawn survives intact for a length of 21.5m where it meets the modern driveway into the interior of the bawn where the original entrance may have been located. 20th-century cottage built inside bawn near NW angle of original bawn wall which no longer survives along this side. The E side of the bawn wall which is well preserved survives approx. 3m high, a portion of the SE angle wall return of the bawn survives, no other remains of bawn visible along S and W sides of tower house. Bawn wall constructed of limestone rubble with no base-batter visible. Wall protruding from SE angle of bawn may be the remains of an earlier bawn wall of a smaller size, while the larger bawn to the N and E of the tower may be a larger bawn constructed in the 17th century as mentioned in the Civil Survey. Original entrance to bawn no longer visible but originally would have been located at centre of N wall where modern driveway into 20th century cottage now located. Modern cottage possible located on N wall and NW wall return of bawn wall, stream immediately to W of cottage and would delimit extent of bawn. Interior of bawn obscured by several farm outhouses and two farm dwellings. On a N-facing slope of rising ground in upland area with extensive views to N, and higher ground to S. There is a large deep quarry immediately to N of the graveyard (TS055-067002-) and a moated site (TS055-068----) 100m to the S. In the Civil Survey (1654-6) one of the glebeland acres is described as being situated to the N of the church of Lismalin (Simington 1931, vol.1, 123). Long (1896, 255) mentions that the church of Lismolin was attached to Hore Abbey. According to Butler (2006, 282) the church was in continuous use since the Reformation and was substantially remodelled or rebuilt in 1716. A rectangular church (ext. dims. 17.45m N-S; 7.65m E-W; wall T 0.75m) with a three-storey 19th-century bell-tower (ext. dims. N-S 5.05m; E-W 4.3m; wall T 1m) built onto the W end. It is located in the centre of a large rectangular graveyard which is enclosed by a high limestone wall. The E gable is composed of limestone rubble, roughly coursed with a base-batter at the NW angle. There is a later, broken-out window, in the centre of the gable. Most of the central section of the N wall has been reduced to wall-footing level and the W end appears to be 18th or 19th in date. The S wall is better preserved, though there are no features visible in either wall. A doorway (Wth 1.15m) in the centre of the W wall gives access from the church into the bell-tower. The main pointed, cut limestone doorway of the tower (Wth 1m) is visible in the centre of the S wall of tower. A 19th-century wall memorial is inserted into the external face of the S wall off centre to the W. A large medieval waterspout has been re-erected as a memorial in the SE quadrant of the graveyard. The majority of the headstones are located S of the church, there are none to the N and few to the W. The graveyard appears to have cleaned up by a recent graveyard restoration scheme. In the OS Letters the church is mistakenly described as a 19th-century church with nothing surviving of the original church (O'Flanagan 1930, vol.1, 152).
