In grassland, on top of natural rock outcrop on the N-facing slope of the Slieveardagh Hills with panoramic views from W through N to E and higher ground to the S. There is a church (TS048-026002-) 100m to the SW. The Down Survey map (1655-6) illustrates a castle, church and 2 dwellings, one of which may be located across the road from the castle. It is described in the Civil survey (1654-6) as the 'castle and bawne of Moylessane inhabited' (Simington 1931, vol. 1, 101) and in 1640 the proprietor is listed as Pierce Croake (ibid., 127). It was formerly the residence of the Cantwells who resided here until the 17th century (White, 1892, 104). In 1532 John Cantwell, Lord of Mellisson died and was buried in Kilcooley Abbey (McCormack 1989, 31-7). Any settlement associated with the tower house (TS048-026001-) and church (TS048-026002-) is not visible at ground level. In grassland, atop a natural rock outcrop on the N-facing slope of the Slieveardagh Hills with panoramic views from W through N to E, with higher ground to S. Situated on the side of a public road with quarries opposite on the other side of the road and the remains of a small rectangular building (TS048-026005-) of possible medieval date. A church (TS048-026002-) lies 50m to the SW. Formerly the residence of the Cantwells who resided here until the 17th century (White, 1892, 104). In 1532 John Cantwell, Lord of Mellisson died and was buried in Kilcooley Abbey (McCormack 1989, 31-7). Described in the Civil Survey (1654-6) as the 'castle and bawne of Moylessane inhabited', with the proprietor in 1640 listed as Pierce Croake (Simington 1931, vol. 1, 101, 127). The Down Survey map (1655-6) shows a castle, church and 2 dwellings, one of which may be that located across the road from the castle (TS948-026005). The tower house is a four-storey rectangular tower built with limestone rubble, roughly coursed, with cut quoin stones, with a largely collapsed circular tower (int. diam. 1.9m) at the SW angle which contained a spiral stairs. The tower house was entered at ground-floor level through a doorway in the S face of the circular stair tower. This tower house is unusual in that there is a pronounced recess on the external S face up to second-floor level, above which the upper S wall, carried on corbels and the SW angle tower, projects over this recess. The E side of the recess is defined by a projecting garderobe chute at the E end of the S wall which serves the upper floors. The SW angle tower only rises to the first-floor level in circular form, above which, though broken out, the stairs appears to have been carried within a projection at the S end of the W wall, with a doorway giving access to the second-floor level. The ground floor is lit by two flat-headed slit opes, in the N and S wall respectively, while the E wall contains two blind arcades and the W wall only one, off centre to N. The first-floor was supported on a wooden floor and has a similar lighting arrangement. It is roofed by a barrel vault which was originally constructed with long vertical timbers, running E-W, which carried the centring. The chambers above the vault are inaccessible. A possible bawn wall (T 0.5m; H 1.3m) returns from the SW angle tower in a westerly direction towards the church, although this wall may be later, associated with a ruined 18th-century house to the NW. At the E angle of the tower house there is evidence for a bawn wall return, seemingly running southward parallel to the modern road. Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 26 August 2011 - TS048-026002: Church, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CTS048-026002-. In grassland, in flat pasture on a N-facing slope of the Slieveardagh Hills with a panoramic views from W through N to E. A tower house (TS048-026001-) lies 100m to the NE, and the ruins of an 18th-century house are nearby to the NW. The church consists of a simple rectangular building (int. dims. 6.75m N-S; 13m E-W; wall T 0.75m; ext. dims 8.25m N-S; 14.8m E-W) constructed with coursed limestone blocks, with a base-batter (H 1.8m) and opposite doors at the W end of the N and S walls, and a first-floor chamber, presumably a priest's residence, within the W end of the church. This chamber was carried on floor timbers carried in the thickness of the wall. There is evidence for a small aumbry in the NW angle of the ground floor of the priest's chambers. There is a twin-light ogee-headed window with hollowed spandrels in the E gable and a small aumbry in the SE angle which has been converted into a slit ope. A simple flat-headed window is E of centre in the S wall and a destroyed window E of centre in the N wall. At the W end of the S wall is a simple slit ope which would have provided light for the ground floor of the priest's chamber. There is no evidence of glazing in any of the windows, but there is an internal rebate in the E window surround for wooden shuttering.A large doorway (Wth 2m) is W of centre in the S wall, with no cut stone surround visible, and another destroyed doorway is directly opposite in the N wall. There is no evidence for a graveyard or any other features in the ground surrounding the church. Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 26 August 2011 - TS048-026004: Bawn, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CTS048-026004-. The Down Survey map (1655-6) illustrated a castle, church and 2 dwellings one of which may be located across the road from the castle. It is described in the Civil survey (1654-6) as the 'castle and bawne of Moylessane inhabited' and the proprietor in 1640 is listed as Pierce Croake (Simington 1931, vol. 1, 127). In 1532 John Cantwell, Lord of Mellisson died and was buried in Kilcooley Abbey (McCormack 1989, 31-7). A possible bawn wall (Wall T 0.5m; H 1.3m) returns off the circular stair tower at the SW angle of the rectangular tower house in a westerly direction towards the church. It is also possible that this wall is associated with a ruinous 18th century house to the NW. The bawn wall appears to have run S parallel to the modern road. In undulating grassland, on top of natural rock outcrop on the N-facing slope of the Slieveardagh Hills with panoramic views from W through N to E and higher ground to the S. It is situated on the side of a public road with a tower house (TS048-026001-) 25m to the S and a small quarry immediately to the NE. A small rectangular building (ext. dims. 4.7m N-S; 3.75m E-W) constructed of roughly coursed limestone. The E wall is the most intact (H 1.8m; T 1.3-1.5m), the N wall has been partially rebuilt on a slightly different line. Only the E end of the S wall survives and the W wall does not survive. The appearance of the walling and its association with Mellisson tower house and medieval church (TS048-026002-) suggest a possible medieval date for this building.
