At the NE end of NE-SW ridge in flat poorly drained countryside with good views in all directions. A poorly preserved, heavily overgrown round-topped mound (H 3m), the NE and SW sides of which have been quarried into. It was difficult to examine due to the dense cover of bushes, however, there was no enclosing feature visible. A field boundary intersects the mound at N on an E-W axis, with a second field boundary running across the W edge of the mound on a N-S axis. It is not marked on the 1st (1840) ed. OS 6-inch map. Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 26 August 2011 - TS046-047: Castle - tower house, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CTS046-047----. In flat pasture with the Clodiagh River immediately to the E. Anthony O'Dwyer is listed as proprietor in 1640 when the building is described “as a small destroyed Wast castle” (Simington 1934, vol.2, 100). Described by O'Donovan in 1840 as a castle with only the E gable surviving to full height surmounted by a chimney with a fragment of a square tower remaining (O'Flanagan 1930, vol. 1, 104). The four-storey tower house is constructed from limestone rubble, roughly coused, with a base-batter, the quoins are only dressed on the upper floor levels. Only the E wall (L 5.5m) survives intact, together with the E end of the N and S walls. There are no remains of the W end of tower house which must have contained the entrance doorway and the stairs. Simple slit opes lit the ground floor, one in the centre of each surviving wall, with larger flat-headed, cut-stone windows at third and fourth-floor levels. Wooden floors were carried on floor joists evidenced at first and second-floor levels, with remains of a barrel vault over the third floor. Good evidence of internal mud rendering, with white limewash over, particularly well preserved at ground-floor level in the S side of the ground-floor window embrasure in the E wall. There is a large flat-headed cut-stone window in the centre of the E wall at fourth-floor level, now partially blocked, and a smaller flat-headed cut stone window at third-floor level in centre of the N wall. Flat-headed windows with bar holes are visible and punch-dressed cut stone surrounds suggestive of a late 16th/early 17th-century date. No remains of the chimney or square tower described by O'Donovan now survive. On top of a low rise of ground in flat countryside with good extensive views in all directions. This enclosure is not visible at ground level. The field boundary to S and W which intersected with the enclosure as indicated on the 2nd (1953) ed. OS 6-inch map is still intact. The monument is not marked on the 1st (1840) ed. OS 6-inch map. On a low knoll which may originally have been a low dry hillock on wet land, on the N-facing slope in undulating poorly drained grassland with good views in all directions. Poorly preserved ringfort consisting of a circular area (int. diam. 35m N-S; 33m E-W ) enclosed by an earthen bank which has been mainly reduced to a scarp (H 0.4-0.9m) with possible entrance gap (Wth 5m) at N. In the centre of the interior there is a low limestone boulder (1m l x 0.4m x 0.4m) protruding above the surface of the ringfort. Interior of ringfort rises in the centre following the natural slopes of the hillock.
