Situated W of the Clodiagh River. A water mill is marked in this area on the Down Survey parish map. The site, which stood in a farm complex, has been completely levelled and there are no visible remains. The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Tipperary. Vol. 1 - North Tipperary' compiled by Jean Farrelly and Caimin O'Brien (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2002). Situated on flat pasture with good views in all directions. A number of historical references confirm Moyaliff's borough status. These included a reference dated c.1305 stating the burgesses render 6. 14d per annum (Bradley 1985, 58) and another dated 1338 which states that 60 burgesses held 200 acres for £4 16d, 'nothing can be levied in time of war' (CIPM, vol. 7, 120). The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Tipperary. Vol. 1 - North Tipperary' compiled by Jean Farrelly and Caimin O'Brien (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2002). Situated on a gradual NE-facing slope in undulating terrain, on the N side of a roughly square-shaped graveyard (TN046-006005); within the medieval borough of Moyaliff (TN046-006). Listed in the ecclesiastical taxation of the Diocese of Cashel in 1302 (CDI, vol. 5, 280). The church (ext. dims. 9.1m N-S; 24.6m E-W; wall T 0.92m) is composed of roughly coursed limestone and sandstone with an external base-batter 0.8m high and 0.17m wide. It is entered through a pointed sandstone doorway with external chamfer at the W end of the S wall with a pointed relieving arch above the doorhead. This door has an internal rebate with a drawbar-hole in the E wall, a receiver in the W wall and slots below for securing the door. According to the OS Letters a flat-headed window was visible in the S wall (O'Flanagan 1930, vol. 1, 185). The W wall has no windows - the lower portion has been crudely pointed and the apex of the gable survives intact with a recess for roof timbers. OS Letters describe two windows in this wall, both disfigured (ibid., 185). The S wall has a gap broken through near the E end. A vertical slot in the S wall c. 11m from the W gable may have contained a wooden partition, however, the wall is quite disturbed at this point. Architectural fragments have been reused as grave-markers including a window jamb outside the S wall of the church. Situated in a low-lying river valley with the Clodiagh River running N-S c.100m to the W and a church (TN046-006001-) 400m to the N. Described in the fourteenth century as consisting of a 'stone tower roofed with shingles' (Cal. inq. post mortem, no. 184). The manor of Moyaliff which was controlled by James le Botiller, Earl of Ormond, was described in 1338 as consisting of 'no edifices except a stone tower covered with shingles. Of no value because nobody wishes to hold it.' (Cal. inq. post mortem, no. 347). The burgesses of Moyaliffe held 220 acres of land for which they paid 4l 16d rent yearly (Cal. inq. post mortem, no. 347). A high, steep-sided flat-topped motte (H 8m)(TN046-006004-) the top of which is enclosed by a roughly coursed limestone castle (int. dims. 8.2m x 6.75m). No bailey area visible. The base of the walls are largely intact with the SE wall surviving 3m high. The S half of the SE wall (L 8.7m) projects out beyond the N portion (L 7.3m; wall T 1.5m). Collapsed masonry containing mural stairs is located in the castle interior. There is a garderobe chute in the W wall. Listed in the RMP (1998) as a dwelling. A map of the Armstrong Estates - Mealiff….1761 by Paul Higgins/James Madden depicts a large two storey, five bay house with pediment and with a stack at each end of the building. This house is probably not earlier than eighteenth century in date and is incorporated in the present Moyaliff House. It does not appear to be an antiquity though Bence-Jones describes the house as 'a rambling house of several periods and great character, incorporating some of the walls of an old Butler castle' (1988, 218-9).
