In flat terrain c. 1km from the Lingaun River which flows N-S roughly along the line of the Kilkenny border. In 1319-20 there is mention of eleven burgages at Lynan which has been identified as Newtown (Lennon) by Bradley (1985, 59). The present village is named 'Newtown Lower' on the 1906 ed. OS 6-inch map and is currently named Faugheen. There is a 13th-century church (TS079-015001-) in ruins at the E end of the present village which is also depicted on the Down Survey (1655-6) map and mentioned in the Civil Survey (1654-6). The Down Survey map also shows a cluster of a church and two houses at the W end of the village, roughly where the present RC church is located. There are no earthworks associated with this settlement visible at ground level. Detached five-bay two-storey house, built c. 1870 with recent glazed porch addition to front elevation. Hipped slate M-profile roof with sheeted eaves and rendered chimneystacks. Painted roughcast rendered walls. Timber-sliding sash six-over-six pane windows to front, one-over-one and two-over-two pane to rear, round-headed over entrance doorway and square-headed elsewhere, with replacement uPVC windows to ground floor of front. Elliptical-headed door opening with replacement glazed timber door, spoked fanlight and steps. Single- and two-storey outbuildings to east and south of house have pitched slate roofs, painted rendered and rubble stone walls, and segmental-, elliptical-, and square-headed openings. One outbuilding is double height with bays separated by full-height dressed limestone piers.
