H 1.2m) mainly reduced to a scarp. S quadrant of interior has been quarried away and the inner bank is intersected by the modern road at W on a N-S axis. Multiperiod house consisting of a two-storey five-bay house with central shallow breakfront and venetian doorway with large fanlight over the doorway. This block is built onto the front of an earlier two-storey building which itself is built onto the N gable of an earlier two and a half storey single-pile house of possible 17th-century date. In the Civil Survey (1654-6) Henry Laffan is listed as proprietor in 1640 and on the lands are mentioned a 'little old Castle with part of the Walls of a stone house not finished' (Simington 1931, vol.1, 106). The earliest part of these range of buildings may be the remains of the house which was under construction in the Civil Survey. In beech planted 19th-century woodland on N facing slope of rising ground in upland region good views on downslope, higher ground to S. Impressive well-preserved ringfort (int. diam. 32m N-S; 35m E-W) consisting of a raised circular area enclosed by an earth and stone bank (top Wth 2.5m; base Wth 4.5m; int. H 0.5m; Ext. H 1.5-3m) and external fosse (base Wth 1.5m; top Wth 6m; Ext. D 1.2m). Nearby gate lodge to Noan House located 70m to W. Possible entrance gap at NNE (Wth 2.5m) where bank slopes down to interior only break in bank around ringfort. External height of bank is greatest on the downslope and lower on the upslope, remains well preserved despite been planted with beech trees in the 19th century. On low rise of grassland with good views in all directions. Road intersects outer bank at N on an E-W axis. Bivallate ringfort consists of a raised circular platform (diam. c. 23m N-S; 6m E-W; overall diam. 50m E-W) defined by a scarp (H 2m), fosse (base Wth 4-2m; top Wth 6m; ext. D 1.5m) and external bank (base Wth 3m; top Wth 1.2m; ext. H1.5m). The SW quadrant has been quarried away leaving a hollow depression (dims. 25m N-S; 15m E-W; D 2m) where the platform and the enclosing elements were located. External bank is best preserved from N through E to SE. At SE to SSW the bank has been levelled and the fosse has been filled in and from SSW through W to NW the enclosing elements have been quarried away. Evidence of cattle poaching damage to bank at NE and the external face of the platform at N. No clear entrance feature visible. Platform was originally enclosed by a bank which has now been reduced to a scarp. Fair to poor condition situated in a reclaimed field of grassland. Slightly hollow circular area (int. diam. 30m N-S; 28m E-W) enclosed by and earthen bank (top Wth 2m; base Wth 4m; ext. H 1-2m; int. H 0.2-0.5m)and outer fosse (base Wth 4m; top Wth 6m; ext. D 1m) with possible entrance gap (Wth 3m) at N where the bank has been levelled and where the game rearing buildings are located. Gamekeepers single-storey house of 19th-century date immediately to N with three low corrugated buildings for rearing game built around the N quadrant of the ringfort. Ringfort may have been re-used or landscaped in the 19th century when the beech woodland was being planted. Detached five-bay two-storey country house, built c. 1810, having slightly projecting central breakfront, to front of multiple-bay three-storey earlier block with four-bay three-storey earliest possibly seventeenth-century block at right angles to latter and having one-bay two-storey lean-to addition and further multiple-bay two-storey block at right angles to four-bay block. Hipped slate roof to front block with overhanging sheeted eaves. Pitched slate roofs to earlier blocks, slate cat slide roof to lean-to addition. Rendered chimneys throughout, earliest block having stout stack. Painted rendered walls, with moulded rendered eaves course to front block. Square-headed openings throughout with timber sliding sash windows and tooled limestone sills. Front block has six-over-six pane to first floor, nine-over-six pane to ground floor and tripartite to gables. Six-over-six pane to rear blocks, with three-over-three pane to top floor of earliest block. Entrance comprising round-headed opening with elaborate beaded cobweb fanlight, timber panelled double doors with flanking Doric pilasters having fluted frieze and ashlar limestone entablature, two-over-two pane flanking timber sidelights, accessed by flight of limestone steps. Segmental-headed openings having two-over-two pane timber sliding sash windows with limestone sills, circular opening with timber fitting and timber louvred half-moon window openings to first floor and camber-headed three-over-six pane and six-over-six pane timber sliding sash windows with limestone sills to ground floor some of which have carved limestone keystones. Elliptical-headed carriage arches to breakfront having ashlar limestone voussoirs and surrounds and camber-headed openings, some with carved limestone keystones, and timber battened doors. L-plan two-storey east range having pitched and hipped slate roofs with brick chimneystack and painted roughcast rendered walls. Segmental-headed openings having three-over-six pane timber sliding sash windows with limestone sills and round-headed window openings with timber fittings, and round-headed opening with timber battened door to first floor. Elliptical-headed carriage arches with ashlar limestone voussoirs and surrounds. Segmental-headed openings with timber battened doors having cut sandstone steps. Waterpump to cobble stoned yard. Rendered bellcote to west outbuilding. Three-bay two-storey gardener's house to south having single-bay single-storey extension to west. Pitched slate roof with rendered chimneystacks and having pitched slate roof to extension. Coursed rubble sandstone and limestone masonry walls. Square-headed openings with replacement timber windows with limestone sills. Square-headed quarry glazed window to extension. Square-headed door opening with glazed overlight and glazed timber door. Limestone boundary walls with cut limestone copings and ashlar piers with carved ornate caps having cast-iron gate.
