On generally flat summit of hill in undulating terrain, under fairly lush pasture. Land rises very gradually to S and W. A large enclosure (TS076-001003-) is conjoined to the E of this monument and field banks (TS076-001002-) are associated with it. Bivallate ringfort (TS076-003----) located c. 150m to NE. Enclosure is levelled, however, its outline is clearly visible as a cropmark, with lush grass and thistles growing in former fosse (Wth 3-4m). A square enclosure (diam. c. 28m N-S; 28.7m E-W), the outline of which is clearly visible on the ground as a cropmark, with lush grass and thistles growing in the former fosse (Wth 3-4m). In 1982 (Cahill) the enclosure was delimited by a low bank and fosse. In an earlier aerial photograph (CUCAP 13 July 1966 AOZ 96) the enclosure is obscured by trees. More recent aerial photographs, ASIAP (31) 8-10 (1996?) show the outline of the monument as a cropmark. Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 26 August 2011 - TS076-001002: Field boundary, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CTS076-001002-. On generally flat summit of hill in undulating terrain, under fairly lush pasture. Land rises very gradually to S and W. In an aerial photograph (CUCAP AOZ 96 13 July 1966), a bank is shown extending W from near the N edge of the large enclosure (TS076-001003-). This is probably an old field boundary, possibly associated with the monument. It is no longer visible above ground level and does not show up on ASIAP (31) 8, 1996. Another field bank runs roughly N-S from the SW quadrant of the large enclousure, it is visible as an earthwork on the earlier aerial photograph and as a cropmark on the later one. Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of revised upload: 29 September 2014 - TS076-001003: Enclosure, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CTS076-001003-. On generally flat summit of hill in undulating terrain, under fairly lush pasture. Land rises very gradually to S and W. A smaller enclosure (TS076-001001-) is located along the W edge of this monument and field banks (TS076-001002-) are associated with it. Bivallate ringfort (TS076-003----) located c. 150m to NE. A large, roughly D-shaped enclosure (diam. c. 100m) with the N side being particular straight. According to landowner it was levelled c. 20 years ago. The fosse is visible as a cropmark to E and S, however, there is no visible trace above ground of N side. The S and E quadrants enclose the base of the hill. The S side kinks out slightly where a field boundary, running N-S, meets the monument. When Cahill (1982) visited the monument it was defined by a bank with portion of the fosse in evidence on S and E side and internal divisions were also visible. The enclosure is upstanding in an aerial photograph (CUCAP 13 July 1966 AOZ 96) when it was grass covered and appears to be defined by scarp. There may have been an outer enclosing element. This is evidenced on the 2nd (1901-05) ed. OS 6-inch map by a scarp running concurrently with the SE quadrant of the inner enclosure at a distance of c. 20m. This shows up on the aerial photograph as a bank, partially covered hidden by trees. It also appears to have been transected N-S by a bank or ditch, traces of which are apparent on the aerial photograph. This may or may not be contemporary with the enclosure. On a NW-facing slope in undulating terrain, surrounded by pasture. Trees growing around inner bank and outer bank in W sector. Bivallate circular ringfort (diam. N-S 29.7m; E-W 29m) enclosed by inner bank (Wth 1.8m crest, 4.25m base; int. H 0.36m; H 1.24m above fosse) wide, shallow, flat-bottomed fosse (Wth 3.1m) and outer bank (Wth 2m crest, 3.8m base; H above int. fosse 0.3m; H above ext. 0.68m). Outer bank only survives from SE-S-SW-NW, with a slight scarp beyond this to N. In E half of ringfort the inner bank is reduced to scarp (H 0.7m over 2.1m above fosse) and fosse (Wth 3.2m; D 0.3m). Internal stone revetment on inner bank clearly visible in W sector. Interior slopes very gently towards entrance in NW (Wth 3m). Field boundary runs roughly N-S c. 6m E of outer edge of fosse, outer bank not visible in this sector. Upcast from badgers sets in S and SW quadrant in fosse and to lesser extent in both banks. Post and wire fence runs outside S and W sides with gate immediately SE. The area immediately E of the ringfort is part of a cattle track which no doubt has aided the denudation of the outer defences in this sector. On fairly level ground at base of a N-facing slope. According to the Civil Survey (1654-6) seven acres of land in Outeragh was owned by Theobald Butler 'on wch is a thatcht house & an Oarchard' (Simington 1931, vol.1, 236). The present townland house is depicted on the 1st (1840) ed. OS 6-inch map. It is a two storey, four-bay house, aligned N-S, facade facing E. Three brick chimney stacks, one at either gable and one centrally placed. New sawn timber roof covered with slates. House currently unoccupied but dry internally. House probably modified internally. Several of the doors, including an upstairs door at the top of the stairs leading to a corridor, are well defended with draw-bars and locks. There is a brick-lined wall oven in the E wall of the fireplace in the N gable. Features such as the wall-oven and corner fireplaces suggest a possible late 17th-century or early 18th-century date for this house. Ruins of castle lie in small area of scrub (dims. 13m N-S; 24m E-W) with trees and other vegetation around the edge. Field under tillage. This fallow scrub area has been used to dump field clearance stones and dead wood. Six separate piles of collapsed masonry. On a slight rise in gently undulating terrain, surrounded by pasture, with the main N8 Cahir-Cashel road running N-S to the W. Geoffrey Keating (Seathrún Céitinn) was the parish priest of Outeragh in 1610 (Killanin and Duignan 1967, 133). The church (ext. dims. 8.8m N-S; 19.9m E-W; wall T 0.95-1.05m) is roughly centrally placed within a rectangular graveyard (TS076-018001-) and built of roughly coursed limestone rubble with occasional sandstone conglomerate. The E and W gables of the church are heavily ivy covered, though the outline of a bellcote is visible on the latter. Only the E end of the N wall survives (H 3.6m) and evidence of a doorway in the W end is indicated by a drawbar-hole in the masonry. A short length of the W end of the S wall survives. According to the OS Letters of 1840 there was a 'clump of the south wall attached at some height from the ground to the east gable, on which some traces of the eastern side of a window are noticeable' (O'Flanagan 1930, vol. 2, 122). A large broken-out window in the E gable is splayed internally, the surrounds are missing, though according to Cahill (unpublished 1982) it had sandstone dressing and a sandstone jambstone with an external chamfer lies at the internal base of the E gable. Along the N wall there is a tall narrow embrasure, the window itself broken out. The N wall has a slight base-batter (Wth 0.3m; H 1.25m), but this has been removed at the E end and the wall straightened and repointed to provide a back wall for a modern 'oratory' or prayer shelter. Otherwise this structure consists of a concrete plinth and slated gabled roof held up by sections of pipe filled with concrete. The N end of the W wall has been altered. While the lower courses remain, the wall above has been re-faced and, in effect, shortened. A parcel is the land of a title, not an address. The owner's name is in the Land Registry of Tailte Éireann: a copy of the folio can be ordered on landdirect.ie, for a fee; this site names no owner. A price is the price recorded for a past sale, not a valuation.
