Situated on a natural rise of ground with good views in all directions. According to Lewis (1837, vol. 1, 400) a castle, traditionally called Knockballymaher, was incorporated in the house (TN018-004002-) of a Cromwellian settler, Hutchinson, who arrived in 1660. In the Civil Survey (1654-6) there is no mention of a castle, however, it states that 'uppon the sd lands of Knockballymagher stands the walls of a stone house' (Simington 1931, vol. 1, 13 ). The house at Knockballymagher/Rockforest appears to have been of late seventeenth or early eighteenth-century date as, in a will dated 1718, James Hutchinson left Knockballymagher to his son, James (Parker-Hutchinson family papers, unpublished, NLI, MS 12,060, 39). The house came to be called Rockforest House and was knocked between 1840 and 1902 and a new house built c. 200m to N (Stout 1984, 136). According to a family history 'the old house was originally an old castle but has been added to at different times'. It is described as being 'originally covered with Irish shingles made of oak and nailed like slates with shingles' (NLI, MS 12,060, 44). A further reference to Knockballymagher states that 'it was called a Castle, it has there a small round tower with a wooden stairs winding, the whole building was covered with oak shingles, in a later period was thatched for many years, till pulled down by the Gibson family when they purchased [1852?]' (NLI, MS 12,062, 11). In the Parker-Hutchinson family papers (NLI MS 12,062, 11) there is a reference to an old castle in Rockforest, which was formerly called Knockballymagher townland. It appears that this castle was later incorporated into a house, now gone, probably of seventeenth-century date (TN018-004002-). Two proprietors are listed as landowners in this area, 'James Earle of Ormond' and 'John Magher of Clonenakeny Esqr. Irish Papist' (ibid.). Knockballymagher later became known as the townland of Rockforest. A house, which appears to be early eighteenth-century in date and came to be called Rockforest House, was knocked between 1840 and 1902 and a new house built c. 200m to the N. This new house was destroyed in 1922 and there is no visible trace of it now. Preceding both these houses was an earlier, possibly seventeenth-century, house and according to family history 'the old house was originally an old castle but has been added to at different times'. In the Parker-Hutchinson family papers it is described as being 'originally covered with Irish shingles made of oak and nailed like slates with shingles' (NLI MSS 12,060, 44). A new house, mentioned in James Hutchinson's (2nd) will of 1718 had been built by his son James (3rd) who inherited Knockballymagher in 1718. Thus there are possibly two houses, one seventeenth-century built onto a 'castle' probably a tower house (TN018-004001), and another house built in early eighteenth century by James (3rd). - Rockforest House, building misc, 1760–1820, Regional interest, registry number 22401801, https://www.buildingsofireland.ie/niah/search.jsp?type=record&county=TN&regno=22401801. Former outbuildings of Rockforest House, built c.1780, including house with attached former coach house, folly tower, stables and outbuildings. Multiple-bay two-storey coach house with round-headed carriage arch and square-headed doorways, all with roughly-dressed voussoirs with five-bay two-storey house with replacement uPVC windows, the whole under pitched slate roof with rendered chimneystacks. Single-storey four-bay outbuilding to north of road, with pitched corrugated-iron roof and rubble walls. Four-stage round-plan folly tower straddling stone boundary wall has rubble walls with slit windows and crenellations. Detached multiple-bay single and two-storey stables at northwest end of yard, with pitching door and with carriage opening with mono-pitch porch, now disused. Pitched slate roof with stone chimneystack, rubble walls and square-headed openings with louvres to windows and battened doors. Single-storey outbuildings to south of road with mono-pitch corrugated-iron roofs and rubble walls.
- Saint Patrick's Catholic Church, church/chapel, 1875–1880, Regional interest, registry number 22401807, https://www.buildingsofireland.ie/niah/search.jsp?type=record&county=TN&regno=22401807. Freestanding gable-fronted Catholic church with three-bay side elevations, built 1877, having sacristy to east end and belfry to west. Pitched artificial slate roof with rendered chimneystack to sacristy and sandstone cross finials to gables. Snecked limestone and sandstone gable-front with ashlar sandstone quoins, barges, roughcast elsewhere. Pointed-arch openings, those to front, including belfry, having surrounds of alternate limestone and sandstone blocks. Ashlar sandstone block-and-start surround to sacristy window. Replacement windows with stained glass, and battened double-leaf door. Interior has timber A-framed roof and has gallery over entrance end. Stoup to front gable. Rendered walls and piers to site boundary.
