In improved pasture, on a gentle N-facing slope. Oval area (dims. 31m WNW-ESE; 27m NNE-SSW) defined by inner scarp (Wth 3.55-3.75m; H 0.65-1.2m) which is generally uniform, an intervening fosse (Wth 6.85-7.6m; D 0.75-0.9m), bank (Wth 5.2-8.65m; int. H 0.75-0.9m; ext. H 0.5-1.05m) and outer fosse (Wth 3.9-7.2m; D 0.15-0.25m). The intervening fosse is best preserved E-S and is shallower S-ENE. The bank is visible from E-SSW and WSW-NNE and is best preserved in the NE quadrant. It is eroded by cattle from WSW-NNE, where it is flat topped, and is also eroded SSW-WSW. The outer fosse is visible from NW-ENE, E-ESE and SSE-S and is backfilled ESE-SSE and S-WSW. It is truncated by a field boundary (long-axis NNW-SSE) across the WSW-sector. There is a causewayed entrance (Wth 4-5.5m) across both fosses ENE-E. The interior is generally smooth on the surface and tends to slope gently to the NNE. In improved, lush pasture, on a gentle SE-facing slope. Circular area (dims. 21m N-S; 20m E-W) defined by scarp (Wth 2.85m; H 0.6m) and outer fosse (Wth 7.55m; D 0.25m). The scarp (Wth 4.0m; H 1.0m) has slipped on the downslope side S-SW. The fosse is best preserved from WSW-SSE. The interior is grass covered and has a gentle SE-facing slope. An enclosure (TS059-100----) is visible c. 370m to ESE. Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 26 August 2011 - TS059-100: Enclosure, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CTS059-100----. In improved pasture, on top of a N-S ridge. Sub-oval area (dims. 28m NE-SW; 24m NW-SE) defined by scarp (Wth 3m; H 0.95m) and outer fosse (Wth 6.1m; D 0.2m), both visible from SSW-E. An indistinct gap (Wth 1.2m) may be an original entrance. The fosse is backfilled at the NNE where there may be a possible causewayed entrance. The exterior of the scarp shows signs of slippage, probably due to cattle erosion. The interior has a smooth surface and tends to slope down to the SE. There are traceable remains of a sub-rectangular area (dims. 18m NNE-SSW; 16m ESE-WNW) adjoining the monument to the NNW; open to the E. It is defined by traces of a levelled bank extending from the enclosure at NNW and sweeps from here in curvilinear form N-NE. In pasture, on a W-facing slope, at townland boundary between Carrownreddy and Sadleirswells. There is no visible trace of this well above ground. It is named on the 1st (1840) ed. OS 6-inch map as 'Black Well'. The ground is poorly drained on either side of the townland boundary (Wth c. 1.5m). There is no local information of a well at this location, however it is frequently noted as a wet area. According to Flynn (1913, 8-9) 'Tubber Bryan' was the name of an old well 'which existed some 200 yards from the mote on Tipperary Hills, but which is now closed up'. It was so named because of a tradition that 'Brian Boro washed his wounds there after the battle of Sulcoit' (ibid.). Sadleirswells townland was, in the 17th century and probably earlier, called Tobberbrien (Down Survey map (1655-6) Hibernia Regnum, courtesy of Trinity College Dublin). This townland also appears as 'Tobberbryen' in the Civil Survey (1654-5) (Simington 1934 vol. 2, 38). A re-evaluation of the evidence suggests that it is likely that Flynn’s estimate of distance was erroneous and that the well which gave the townland its earlier name is the ‘King’s Well’ (TS059-204----), situated c. 1km NNE of the motte. In pasture. Roughly centrally placed within Sadleirswells townland which, in the 17th century and probably earlier, was called Tobberbrien (Down Survey map (1655-6) Hibernia Regnum, courtesy of Trinity College Dublin; Civil Survey (1654-5) Simington 1934 vol. 2, 38). The well is indicated on the 1st (1840) ed. OS 6-inch map as, ‘King’s Well’, located on the E side of a N-S flowing stream. Neither the well or the stream are indicated on the 1904 revision of the OS 6-inch map. According to Flynn (1913, 8), the well, 'is now closed up'. The well is named after Brian Boru, High King of Ireland (died 1014) who reputedly washed his wounds here after the battle of Sulcoit which was fought in 968 (Flynn 1913, 8-9). Another well (TS059-130----) in the S of the townland, named ‘Black Well’ on the 1st ed. OS 6-inch map was previously considered to be that associated with Brian Boro as, being situated c. 500m NE of the Tipperaryhills motte (TS067-001----), it accorded with Flynn’s description of the location of the well, ‘some 200 yards from the mote on Tipperary Hills’ (ibid.). However, it is more likely that Flynn’s estimate of distance was erroneous and that the well is the ‘King’s Well’, situated c. 1km NNE of the motte. The enclosure is also clearly visible on Google Earth (imagery date 16 December 2016). A well (TS059-204----) associated with Brian Boru is located c. 90m to the NW and there is an enclosure (TS059-100----) c. 190m to the S and another (TS059-098----) c. 350m to the WSW. A parcel is the land of a title, not an address. The owner's name is in the Land Registry of Tailte Éireann: a copy of the folio can be ordered on landdirect.ie, for a fee; this site names no owner. A price is the price recorded for a past sale, not a valuation.
