On a slight rise in fairly flat terrain in the Tar river valley, with a stream flowing c. 120m to S and a holy well (TS087-016----) located 120m to SW. The church is not marked on the 1st (1840-41) ed. OS 6-inch map, but it is shown on the 2nd (1907) ed. as 'church (site of)'. According to Power (1908, 61-2), the church was 'of the Penal Times'. On a natural rise on a gentle SE-facing slope with a narrow, stone-lined channel (L 18m x W 1m) leading down to the river, which runs 30m to the SE, in woodland. Circular well (D 1.35m) with dry-stone walling (W 1.7m; T 0.6m). There is no water in the well. A roughly dressed stone cross, cut out of a single stone, surrounts the wall in the NW. There is a small drain at the base of the wall in the SE quadrant to allow water to drain out. A lintel, supported on two stones, crosses the channel. A crudely built stone altar lies 7.2m SE of the holy well, with circular arrangment of stones at its base (diam. 1.9m). Another circle of stones lies 2m to the E (diam. 1.9m) and 1m to the W (diam. 1.3m). These appear to be recently constructed, small loose stones laid in a cirle. The altar, consisting of a loose stone cairn, is surmounted by a very eroded vice-grips (?), broken statue of Our Lady, St. Christopher carrying baby Jesus, a broken porcelain figure of two angels at the foot of a missing cross with a skull depicted at the base of the cross, very eroded unidentifiable chalk statue, a possible candle holder and an empty glass jar. The tree, against which the altar rests, has suspended from a branch a plaque with two depictions, the apparition at Knock and Padre Pio with 'Bless Our Home' written on a wooden background. There is also a picture hook on the tree and an oval horeshoe. The name 'Tobermullacash' or Tobar Mullaigh Cearta means 'Well of the Mount of Suffering (Calvary)'. It is also known as 'Easter Well' (Power 1908, 61-2) and according to a local woman the well is still visited on Easter Sunday by some of the old women in the locality. On an E-W ridge on ground sloping to the E-NE, in the garden of a house which is c. 20m to the NE of the enclosure. The monument is depicted as a circular enclosure on the 1907 ed. OS 6-inch map and on the 1840 ed. a field boundary kinks northward to avoid the monument, though the enclosure is not indicated. A circular area (diam. 20m N-S; 20.3m E-W) enclosed by an broad, flat-topped bank (Wth 1.8-2m crest, 3.3-4.2m base; int. H 0.2-1.3m; ext. H 1.1-1.3m) which is less pronounced from NE-E-SE and a flat-bottomed fosse (Wth 2.2m; D 0.6m) which is evident from the SW-W-NW. The bank is of mainly earthen construction with some stones evident. The enclosure was built into the slope with a higher bank on the upslope side. The interior slopes to the NE. There is a possible entrance in the E-NNE where a large tree has been felled, only the base of the trunk remains. A public road runs NW-SE immediately beyond the S quadrant. ## Architectural heritage (National Inventory of Architectural Heritage)

- Shanbally Castle, gate lodge, 1910–1915, Regional interest, registry number 22208704, https://www.buildingsofireland.ie/niah/search.jsp?type=record&county=TS&regno=22208704. Detached cruciform-plan single-storey former gate lodge, dated 1914, having three-bay elevations, lean-to entrance porch to south-east corner whose roof continues to cover area to front of door, and having recent flat-roofed single-storey extension to north. Now in use as house. Pitched slate roof with carved timber bargeboards, timber battened eaves to oversailing barges, with carved limestone corbels, and rendered chimneystacks, central with panel motif. Coursed snecked limestone walls with limestone plinth and having carved limestone date plaque with 'Carrick Knot' motif to east gable. Square-headed openings with cut limestone label-mouldings, chamfered sills and having timber casement windows with small panes, triple-light to south and east elevations. Square-headed door opening with half-glazed timber panelled door, set in square-plan porch, having blocked window to south elevation, and roof to front of doorway supported at corner on chamfered timber post on dressed limestone plinth. Sited at former entrance to now-demolished Shanbally Castle, with quadrant entrance gateway having rendered plinths to cast-iron spear-headed railings and rendered piers with chamfered corners and moulded plinths and caps.
