At the northern terminus of an esker ridge, in an undulating landscape of newly planted forestry. An oval area (dims. 16m N-S; 25m E-W; overall dims. c. 31m N-S; c. 34m E-W visible on OS ortho) defined by shallow scarp (Wth 0.5m; H 0.1m) ESE-NW and gradual scarp (Wth 6.5m; H 1m) NW-ESE where it blends into the natural hillslope (Wth 8m; H 1.5m) and an external fosse (overall Wth 3.2m; D 0.15m) ESE-NW is clearly seen as a darker band of grass. The interior has a W-facing slope. A small, sunken area within the ESE sector may be the remains of a barrow. Forestry (ash) has been planted in the recent past and an adequate buffer zone (min. 30m) has been maintained around monument. There is a private roadway, running roughly E-W c. 15m to the N. The scarp (Wth 1.15m; H 0.5m) is less defined from SE-SW. There are gaps (Wth 4m) at the NNE and S respectively, both with a modern, stoned ramp leading into the interior. The interior has a gentle E-facing slope with an uneven surface. A field boundary, running NE-SW, truncates the fosse in the NW sector. Other field boundaries in the vicinity have been removed. Enclosures (TS059-037---- and TS059-038----) are c. 160m to the E and SSW respectively. In good pasture, on a high ridge, overlooking a natural hollow to the W. An oval area (dims. 18m NW-SE; 11m NE-SW) defined by scarp (Wth 7.6m; H 1.55-2.05m), an intervening fosse (Wth 11.8-12.85m; D 0.25-0.8m) from ESE-NW and an outer bank (Wth 8.6-10.1m; int. H 0.25-0.8m; ext. H 0.25-0.5m) from SSE-NNW, which is best defined in the NW quadrant. There are the possible remains of an outer fosse (Wth 3.1m; D 0.15m) at the NNW and SE-S. The scarp is highest from NNW-ESE. The interior has a gentle SE-facing slope. A field boundary running N-S immediately E follows the line of an old flood plain. A field boundary to the S has been removed. Enclosures (TS059-036---- and TS059-038----) are c. 160m to W and c. 285m to SW respectively. In generally level pasture. An oval area (dims. 30m N-S; 25m E-W) defined by the remains of levelled scarp (Wth 3.7m; H 0.4m) S-N and by scarp (Wth 1.8m; H 1.9m) N-S where it is incorporated into a tree-lined fence. There are the remains of a shallow fosse (Wth 6.5m; D 0.15m) in the NW quadrant. A stream encloses the monument from N-S. There is a possible entrance at WSW, where the scarp is levelled out. The interior has a shallow water-filled depression within the centre. There are slight undulations beyond the monument to the W and a farm trackway to N. Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 26 August 2011 - TS059-065: Castle - unclassified, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CTS059-065----. In improved pasture, on top of a hill, with panoramic views. There is a deep quarry to the E. A trigonometric point marks the peak of Solloghodbeg Hill to the W. The castle is not visible at ground level. According to the Civil Survey of 1640, 'on the top of Sollaghodbegg hill stands the stumpe of a castle Irepayreable' (Simington 1934, vol. 2, 54). A curvilinear hachured feature depicted on the 1904 edition OS 6-inch map may be associated with the castle, however, the area has been quarried. A level, grassed-over track (Wth c. 2m) has been cut into the contour of the hill on the W side, with a ramp leading up into the pasture field where the monument is located, it is probably a quarry road. A deep, wide fosse and high earthen bank downslope to the W of the track may also be associated with quarrying activities. In wet, marshy, flat terrain.A raised oval area (diam. 21.4m N-S; 17.3m E-W) enclosed by a low broad bank (Wth at crest 1.5m; overall Wth 3.2m; H above int. 0.2m; H above fosse 0.55m), largely reduced to scarp, and a shallow flat-bottomed fosse (Wth 3.2m; D 0.2m). There is an entrance (Wth 4m) in the S quadrant with a possible causeway over the fosse, however, there appears to have been some ground disturbance in this quadrant which may have resulted in bank material slipping into the fosse. In the interior there is a slightly raised area (dims. 8m N-S; 6m E-W; H 0.15m) in the W sector, the interior N of this has a number of flag irises growing which suggests this can be quite wet. A field drain (Wth 3m) runs N from the N section of the fosse. There is a gap (Wth 2.5m) in the bank in the NW quadrant. In wet, marshy, low-lying flat terrain in rough pasture. There are a lot of rushes in the surrounding field and on the monument, particularly on the northern half. A raised oval area (diam. 33m N-S; 30m E-W) enclosed by a broad, flat bank (Wth at crest 1.8m; overall Wth base 5.4m; int. H 0.25m; ext. 0.65m) and broad, flat fosse (Wth 5m; D 0.25m). The bank is evident in the NW quadrant and elsewhere has been reduced to scarp. The enclosure is bisected by a field bank running E-W and another field bank runs N-S along the base of the scarp in the E quadrant. The fosse is best preserved in the S sector of the monument, where it is accentuated by rising ground S and SW of the fosse. A parcel is the land of a title, not an address. The owner's name is in the Land Registry of Tailte Éireann: a copy of the folio can be ordered on landdirect.ie, for a fee; this site names no owner.
