In flat grassland with good views in all directions. Levelled enclosure (TS053-032----) 200m to E. Ringfort consists of a circular area (int. diam. 37m N-S; 40m E-W) enclosed by an earth and stone bank (top Wth 1.8m; base Wth 4.5m; ext. H 1.2m; int. H 0.4-1m) with possible entrance gap (Wth 3.7m) which has been widened at E. No outer fosse or other features visible. A sketch plan and section of the monument drawn in 1953 shows the interior as being below the external ground level (OS Field Memorandums). The interior has been recently cleared of vegetation and top sod has been removed otherwise the monument is in a fair to good condition. The monument was described in 1982 as being a heavily overgrown ringfort (Cahill 1982). In flat poorly drained grassland with good views in all directions, ringfort (TS053-031----) 200m to W. It is depicted as a circular enclosure on the 1st (18430 ed. OS 6-inch map and on the 2nd (1953-4) ed. (map dims. c. 35m N-S) the E quadrant has been truncated by the driveway up to Synone House. This truncation is also depicted on a sketch plan and section of the monument drawn in 1953, where the monument appears to be enclosed by a bank or scarp surmounted by a field boundary (OS Field Memorandums). No surface remains visible of levelled enclosure. On top of a low ridge in undulkating countryside in recently ploughed and reseeded with good views in all directions. A hollow depression (D 0.3m; diam. 30m N-S; 28m E-W) in area marked on the 1st (1840) and 2nd (1953-4) ed. OS 6-inch map (map dims. c. 62m N-S; c. 64m E-W) is all that remains of this levelled ringfort. A sketch plan and section of the monument drawn in 1953 depicts the interior as being below the external ground level (OS Field Memorandums).The monument has been levelled since 1982 when it was described as being a univalltate ringfort consisting of a circular area (diam. 40m) enclosed by a bank and an outer ditch which has been partially filled in (Cahill 1982). In grassland atop a low rise of ground, with good views in all directions. A possible ringfort (TS053-036----) lies 120m to the S. In the 19th century, skeletons were found in the fields near the tower house and a helmet was also found nearby (Lewis 1937, 53). Described in the Civil Survey (1654-6) as an old ruined castle whose proprietor in 1640 was listed as Sir William St. Leger, Lord president of Munster (Simington 1931, vol. 1, 216). A circular four-storey high tower house (ext. diam. 9.25m, wall T 2.3m) built with limestone rubble, roughly coursed, with a slight base-batter and battlements. The original pointed entrance in the W face was blocked in the 19th century (White 1892, 12). It opened into a lobby area which was protected by an overhead murder-hole, accessed from the first floor, with a guard chamber off the lobby to the S. Access to the main chamber was directly to the E and access to a second lobby to the N. This second lobby area leads to a spiral stair in the N wall, providing access to the upper floors, and also provides a second access to the ground-floor chamber. The ground floor chamber (int. diam. 3.45m) is circular in plan and lit by three flat-headed single-light windows, set into large embrasures with musket loops either side of the window openings, located at E, SE and SW. The E window has been converted into a ground-floor doorway, probably in the 19th century (White 1892, 12). The first-floor chamber, accessed from the spiral stairs in the N wall, was carried on wooden beams, is lit by two round-headed single-light windows, at S and W, and has a fine stone vault over. Above the vault the second floor (int. dims 4.85m N-S; 4.8m E-W) is square in plan, with a fireplace S of centre in the E wall, a wide ogee-headed window N of centre in the W wall and a wide round-headed window in the S wall. There is good evidence of internal wall render and two large niches W of centre in the N wall and another W of centre in the S wall. A flat-headed doorway in the NE angle leads into an L-shaped garderobe chamber in the E wall, lit by a slit-ope with slop-stone beneath. The third floor also contains a fireplace S of centre in the E wall and windows in the centre of the S and W walls. At mezzanine level between the third floor and the wall-walk, a second garderobe chamber in the E wall is accessed directly off the stairs, lit by a slit-ope with slop-stone beneath. The wall-walk is carried above a string-course, with machicolations at W, above the main entrance, and also at E and S, each carried on three projecting double corbels. The garderobe chute exits at ground floor level on the E side of tower, S of the later inserted doorway. A house (TS053-035005-), of which only the N angle survives, was added onto the S face of the tower house, possibly in the late 16th or 17th century. A possible contemporary stone-lined deep circular well (TS053-035003-), 40m to the NW of the castle, would have been inside the bawn wall. The possible outline of a levelled bawn (TS053-035004-) to the W of the tower house shows up on an aerial photograph (CUCAP ATA 1967) and a return of the bawn wall is visible on the SW face of the tower house. In grassland to N and W of tower house (TS053-035001-) are a series of low earthworks defining several large rectangular fields which are depicted on first ed. OS 6-inch map but not on latest ed. OS 6-inch maps. Aerial photographs taken in 1967 show up these levelled field boundaries to N and W of tower house (CUCAP ATA 62). These are the remains of the field boundaries indicated on 1838 ed. OS 6-inch maps and do not appear to be medieval in date, possibly 18th century field enclosures which were removed between 1838 and 1953-54. This was classified in the SMR (1992) and the RMP (1997) as an 'Field system possible'. Following field inspection this was found to be post-1700 in date. It remains classified as 'Field system' but is not included in the current remit of the ASI. Probable water supply for and contemporary with the tower house. In grassland atop a low rise of ground, with good views in all directions. A house of limestone rubble, roughly coursed, which has been incorporated into the S face of a circular tower house (TS053-035001-). The tower house is described in the Civil Survey (1654-6) as an old ruined castle whose proprietor in 1640 was listed as Sir William St. Leger, Lord president of Munster (Simington 1931, vol. 1, 216). Only the N angle of the house survives with a wall running SE (L 1.3m externally; T at ground level 1m; T at first-floor level c. 0.5m) and SW (T at ground level over 1m; T at first-floor level c. 0.5m). There is a vertical joint in the SE and SW external faces of the tower house where the masonry has been removed to facilitate the incorporation of later masonry. The lower courses of the later masonry, up to 1.8m above ground level, are keyed into the original masonry. There are the remains of a springing arch (H 1.25m above ext. ground level) in the NE gable which appear to have supported the opening for a fireplace as there is a blocked flue in the masonry behind this feature. Though nothing remains of the chimney it appears to have been adjoining the external face of the tower house at roughly the second-floor level of same. At first-floor level there are the remains of a chamber (L SE 1.2m; L SW 1.4m) or perhaps a large window embrasure. The house was possibly added in the late 16th or 17th century. Detached L-plan three-bay two-storey over basement house, built c.1860, facing south, having slightly recessed centre bays to front and rear elevations and slightly advanced centre bay to west elevation. Gable-fronted porch to front elevation and lean-to addition to centre of rear elevation. Gable-fronts to front and rear of end bays and to centre bay of west elevation. Pitched artificial slate roofs, having projecting eaves and terracotta finials to gables, uPVC replacement rainwater goods and rendered chimneystacks. Rendered walls with rendered quoins and painted plinth. Square-headed one-over-one pane timber sliding sash windows with cut limestone sills having render hood-mouldings to front and west elevations to ground and first floors. Margined sash window to first floor of rear elevation. Porch has one-over-one pane timber sliding sash windows to side-walls, with cut limestone sills and reached by flight of cut limestone steps with rendered parapets with cut limestone copings. Round-headed doorway with hood-moulding, timber panelled door and plain fanlight. Yard of outbuildings to north-east, comprising L-plan arrangement of part-ruined two-storey outbuildings with hipped slate roofs and brick chimneystack, rendered rubble limestone walls, square-headed timber louvered windows and square- and segmental-headed entrance openings. Gate-lodge to road is five-bay single-storey with attic, having pitched artificial slate roof and uPVC replacement door and windows.
