The presence of an offset on the side-walls of the tower probably acted as a structural support for the wooden frame of the vault during its construction. The chancel arch is constructed with cut-stone voussoirs dating from the late seventeenth/early eighteenth century and appears to have supported a wooden insertion, possibly the head of a window. Situated on flat pasture with good views in all directions. 'Theobald Purcell of Loghmoe Esqr. Irish Papist' is listed as proprietor in 1640 and the house is described as 'a large demolished stone house' (Simington 1931, vol.1, 69). A seventeenth-century Z-plan house which was added to the N façade of an adjoining tower house (TN035-030005). The house consists of a central rectangular block (ext. dims. 10.2m E-W; 26.7m N-S; wall T 1.1m) which is four storeys high with attic over a semi-basement and has a five-storey angle tower at the NW and SE angles. The main block is a single pile construction possibly divided into three rooms at each level by wooden partitioning. There are two fireplaces at first-floor level with a series of flat-headed fireplaces at all other levels. At the S end of the house at basement level there is a large fireplace with brick oven in the E wall. All windows are flat-headed with six, eight and twelve lights with alternating square and lozenge-shaped glazing-bar-holes visible. There are several entrances at first-floor level, one in the S end of the W wall and a second at the N end of the E wall being the two main entrances to the house. A round-arched doorway at second-floor level off-centre to the N on the E wall gives access to a wooden hoarding from which the bartizan on the NE angle was accessed. The NW angle tower was the main accommodation tower with fireplaces at all levels and also contained a wooden stairs from which all rooms of tower and main house were accessed. The SE angle tower was a defensive tower with many gun loops visible. All upper floors of this tower were accessed from the S end of the main block via a wooden stairs and were not accessible from within the tower itself. According to Crawford (1909b, 234) there is a blocked-up doorway in the centre of the E wall which gave access to an external cellar now destroyed, however, there is no visible evidence of this doorway. At wall-walk level there are the fragmentary remains of double-stepped crenellations with central rounded merlon surmounted by a finial. These merlons covered the small rectangular chimney stacks which were not visible externally. A four-storey tower house with attic, constructed of coursed rubble with rounded angles and slight base-batter. A seventeenth-century semi-fortified Z-plan house (TN035-030004-) is attached to the N façade of the tower house. The tower was accessed from a main doorway in the centre of the N wall which led to a lobby protected by an overhead murder-hole. The spiral stairs in the NE angle were accessed off the lobby and are now blocked up while the ground floor is reached through a doorway directly opposite the main entrance. The ground floor is barrel vaulted with a second vault over the second floor, the latter floor containing an armorial fireplace, now inaccessible. It bears the shields of the Butler and Purcell families with the initials IFP and FP or BP over the fireplace. Other decorative features on the fireplace consists of interlaced triangles and six interlaced rings within a Star of David. All windows were single or twin flat-headed types. Externally at the base of the E wall off-centre to the S there is a large garderobe chute opening which is fed from several garderobes in the SE angle of the tower. A box machicolation at wall-walk level at the centre of the W wall is accessible from the attic. A series of cut-stone corbels support a machicolation at wall-walk level on the N and S walls. This rectangular limestone graveslab (Wth. 0.91m; L 2.04m; T 0.15m) with is located in the chancel of the church near the SW angle of the chancel in front of the chancel arch, in the W row of four slabs. The ivy covered remains of a nave and chancel church (TN035-030002) with a barrel-vaulted tower built onto the E end of the chancel. There areseven late medieval graveslabs lying prostrate on the floor of the chancel (TN035-03008-014). Alongside these there is an open stone sarcophagus (TN035-030016) near the east gable of the chancel to the north of the doorway into the barrel vaulted east tower. The graveslabs and the sarcophagus are arranged in two rows of four across the width of the chancel. This tapering limestone graveslab (top Wth. 0.79m; base Wth. 0.65m; L 1.9m; T 0.18m) with chamfered edge is located in the SE angle of the nave near the chancel arch. The surface of the slab has been worn away removing all traces of any inscription or carvings. There is a single late medieval graveslab (TN035-030015) in the SE angle of the nave near the chancel arch. The graveslabs and the sarcophagus are arranged in two rows of four across the width of the chancel. The sarcophagus is situated in the S row of four slabs in the chancel. Alongside these there is an open stone sarcophagus (ext. L 2m; wall T 0.1-0.2m; H 0.13m; int. L 1.60m; int. Wth 0.63m; ext. Wth 0.9m) without its coffin lid near near the east gable of the chancel to the north of the doorway into the barrel vaulted east tower. One of the graveslabs (TN035-03008/009) on either side of the open sarcophagus may or may not have been its original cover.
