The Civil Survey (1654-6) refers to 'an old Castle thatcht with straw' in 'Tullaghmaine' which was in 1640 under the proprietorship of 'Richard Comyn of Tullaghmaine Irish Papist' (Simington 1931, vol. 1, 206). According to the OS Letters (c. 1840) Tullamain Castle 'is a modern dwelling house, erected by Mr. Maher in fancy imitation of the style of an old castle, and finished about two years ago. It is said to be built on or near the site of an ancient castle, a portion of the walls of which existed not many years since. Not a vestige of the old building now remains' (O'Flanagan 1930, vol. 3, 80). The present 'castle', as described in the OS Letters, was designed by William Tinsley and built between 1835 and 1838 (Bence-Jones 1988, 277). The 'castle' was burnt in the 1920s and subsequently rebuilt (Craig and Garner 1975, 104). On the E slope of a hillock just below the crest of a N-S ridge in pastureland. The church (int. dims. 7.38m N-S; c. 14m E-W to surviving end of S wall - length c. 1840 given as 'about sixty five feet' [19.8m] (O'Flanagan 1930, vol. 3, 80); H of E gable 3.6m; H of N wall 2.9m) is built of roughly coursed limestone rubble with a low base-batter (H 1m above ext. ground level) along the N wall and a high base-batter (2.2m above ext. ground level) on the E gable which is further strengthened by angle buttresses, with well-cut quoins, which are flush with the E gable and project out beyond the N and S wall. The W end of the S wall is also supported by a buttress (Wth 2m; D 0.95m). The W gable and W ends of the N and S walls have not survived. According to the OS Letters (O'Flanagan 1930, vol. 3, 79-80) the church consisted of a nave and chancel 'At a distance of twenty two feet four inches [6.8m] from the east gable, a portion of the middle gable appears, adjoining the north wall, and on the opposite or south side there is a heap of earth mixed with stones'. The church was lit by a two-light window in the centre of the E gable, only the S jambs and half of the sill of which survive. The broken-out sill and a jamb stone lie on the ground 0.75m and 2.2m respectively E of the E gable. There are the remains of a single-light window at the E end of the S wall, but the head is missing. Both windows are chamfered externally. Towards the E end of the N wall there is a break in masonry c. 1.5m above int. ground level, mentioned in the OS Letters as being a window 'much injured on the outside, where it was narrow and filled up with stone-work on the inside' (ibid.). There is a piscina niche at the E end of the N wall with a crude pointed arch, though the piscina itself does not survive. The interior of the church is built up with collapsed masonry, particularly at the E gable where the upper portion of the gable appears to have fallen into the interior and now forms a mound (H c. 1.2m) at the base of the gable. In 2016 a length of walling at the W end of the N wall (L 2.2m; H 1.5m; T 0.96m) was rebuilt after being damaged by a fallen tree. The vegetation was also removed from the interior at this time and a limestone stoup was uncovered. The stoup is hexagonal externally (diam. 0.49m x 0.41m; H 0.33m) with a circular bowl (diam. 0.32m; D 0.23m). Part of the stoup had broken off but has been reunited. The front panel (Wth 0.23m) appears to bear a carving, which, though much eroded, may be of an angel. The two panels on either side (both Wth 0.2m) of this may also have been decorated but are also badly eroded. The back panel (Wth 0.34m) has no trace of decoration, nor do the panels on either side (Wth 0.24-0.25m), though that on the sinister side is badly spawled. Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of revised upload: 8 November 2016 - TS069-045003: Castle - motte and bailey, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CTS069-045003-. Tullamain appears to have been a sub-manor of the Manor of Knockgraffon which was granted by King John to Philip of Worcester towards the end of the 12th century. By the early 14th century Tullamain appears to have been held by the Comyns family, as an account of 1308-9 refers to Comyns at the manor of Tullamelan (Power 1989, 15). Situated on crest of a N-S ridge, planted with mature deciduous trees and enclosed by pasture. Roughly circular, impressive, motte (H 5.17m), the flat-top is irregularly shaped due probably to uprooted trees (top diam. 16m N-S; 12.8m E-W) and slippage. There is a large depression at the top edge of the S quad. (Wth c. 6m; D 1.8m) and another shallow depression roughly centre of mound. The NW-N-NE side is particularly steep and seems to have suffered from more slippage as the enclosing fosse is quite silted up on this side, the enclosing fosse from NE-E-SE is a deep U-shaped fosse (Wth 4.5m; ext. D 2.85m) which is interrupted by a levelling of the fosse and outer bank in the SE quadrant, but the fosse continues from SE-S-W-NW. This fosse is surrounded by a bank (ext. H 3.95m; Wth at top 8m; overall Wth 12.8m), outer fosse (Wth 3m) and outer bank (int. H 1.55m; ext. H xxm; Wth at top 4.6m; overall Wth 6.7m) which is evident from N-E-SE. The inner bank is very defensive, steep sided and particularly broad in the SW quad. Beyond this bank in the SW quad. there is a bailey which broadens out (dims. c. 28m NE-SW; c. 63m NW-SE) towards the W. The bailey is enclosed by a bank (int. H 0.8m; ext. H 3.65m; Wth at top 1.4m; overall Wth 10.6m) which is reduced to scarp in places (H 4.45m) and an outer fosse (Wth 4.3m; D 1.05m). The ground is fairly level for c. 9m beyond this before falling quite sharply (D 1.5m) to a lower ground. The N sector of the bailey terminated with a massive bank (int. H 0.55m; ext. H 4m; Wth at top 6m; overall Wth 8.5m) which continues to cut across the outer fosse of the motte. SSE of the motte, 3.8m from base of the external face of the inner bank of the motte there is a large mound (overall diam. 28m; top diam. 16.6m N-S; 32m E-W; H 2m) with a deep pit on the top which is obscured by heavy overgrowth of scrub and brambles. The mound forms the NE angle of a roughly rectangular area (dims. c. 33m NE-SW; c. 40m NW-SE) which is defined to the SE and SW by a wide bank (int. H 1m; ext. H 4.8m; top Wth 10m). which appears to be a modification of the natural hill. There is a breach in the defences (Wth 3.2m) between the E end of the SE bank and the mound. The bailey area of the motte extents from the NW of this area, which is likely to be part of the entrance defenses. According to local information there are a number of springs in this area. NW of the motte there is a possible second bailey (dims. 52.5m NE-SW; 26m NW-SE), though less defended then the bailey to the SW, it is enclosed by a bank (int. H 0.95m; ext. H 1.2m; Wth at top 1.8m; overall Wth 5.7m) and outer fosse (Wth 3.9m). This second bailey appears to have been truncated by a field boundary which runs roughly E-W and is not visible in the field beyond the field boundary. On the E-facing slope of hillock just below the crest of a N-S ridge in pasture. A rectangular graveyard with a medieval church (TS069-045002-) at the NE angle (dims. c. 30m N-S (from S wall of church); c. 33m E-W). According to the OS Letters (c. 1840) 'There are a few graves, still in use, on the south side of the Church and not separated by a wall or hedge from the surrounding meadow' (O'Flanagan 1930, vol. 3, 80). The graveyard was subsequently enclosed, probably in the early 20th century by a concrete block wall. In the interior of the medieval church of Tullamain (TS069-045002-), in the NE angle is a recumbent slab bearing the date 1575. The limestone graveslab (Wth 0.86m; min. L 2.98m; T 0.125-0.14m), with narrow chamfered edge (Wth 0.02m) is broken into five fragments. It is decorated with a seven-armed segmental cross in relief with fleur-de-lis termainals. There are three cross-bands at the base of the cross-head and also at the base of the shalft, surmounting a pillar-base form. A raised border runs around the slab and features an inscription in Black Letter which has been translated in the OS Letters (O'Flanagan 1930, vol. 3, 80) as 'Hic jacet Edmundus Comyn de Tul... et Grannia filia eugenii viccarthy … lus q obiit xxiii mesis decebris ano dni 1575', the 'vi' in 'viccarthy' is a misreading and actually spells 'M' for 'Mccarthy'. The description of the slab, which is accompanied by an illustration, differs somewhat from what survives. The OS illustration depicts two large portions of the slab - the upper complete and only the dexter side of the lower. The upper portion (Wth 0.86m; L 1.23m) is still in situ though the upper dexter angle (Wth 0.61m; L 0.56m) is cracked. Of the lower portion the upper section with 'lus q obit xxiii' is now broken off (Wth 0.34m; L 0.27m), ; Wth 0.58m; L 0.47m) but the lower portion is more intact, apart from a break on the dexter side (Wth 0.86m; L 0.85m), than shown on the OS illustration as both dexter and sinister sides are intact with what appears to be 'me fieri fecit ….' on the sinister side, translated as 'who erected this monument'. The slab roughly translates as: Here lies Edmund Comyn of Tul[lamain]… who died the 23rd day of December A. D. 1575 and Gráinne [or Grace] daughter of Eugene McCarthy… who erected this monument .… . The inscription begins along the top, continues down the dexter side, ending in December, with just the date 'Ano Dni 1575' along the bottom and the remainder of the inscription is on the sinister side from top to bottom. According to the OS Letters (O'Flanagan 1930, vol. 3, 80) 'lying close to the west of the first mention flag' [TS069-045006-] which was in the north east corner of the Church [TS069-045002-] lies another tombstone also with a Black Letter Inscription in the margin'. The accompanying sketch contains the inscription: 'Hic jacet Renaldi filia Johis capitanei Ihiffirnan uxor Ricardi Comyn que obiit primo die mensis Marcii Anno dni M CCCCC [L] xx ix' in a note accompanying the sketch it states that the 'L' which is depicted as a pocked line may be either an 'L' to represent 50 or part of the ornamentation on the tomb. This roughly translates as: Here lies Renaldi daughter of captain John Heffernan wife of Richard Comyn who died the first day of March A. D. 1529 or 1579. There is a build up of soil, vegetation and roots as well as debris, including collapsed masonry from the N wall of the church which is completely covering the interior which prevented this slab from being located at time of inspection. However, it is known to be in the church along the N wall, not far from the other graveslab. The Civil Survey (1654-6) refers to 'a thatcht house' in 'Tullaghmaine' which was in 1640 under the proprietorship of 'Richard Comyn of Tullaghmaine Irish Papist' (Simington 1931, vol. 1, 206). According to Bence-Jones (1988, 277) the present 'castle' is built on the site of an earlier house. The present 'castle' was designed by William Tinsley and built between 1835 and 1838 (ibid.). The 'castle' was burnt in the 1920s and subsequently rebuilt (Craig and Garner 1975, 104). According to Civil Survey (1654-6), in 1640 a windmill is located in the townland of Tullamain (Simington 1931, vol. 1, 206), and probably is the same one depicted on the Down Survey 1655-8. In pasture, at O.D. height 468ft. Windmill dismantled and ground levelled off. Slight visible surface trace of circular area (diam. 8-10m) defined by fosse like depression (Wth 9.65-10.75m; D 0.1-0.2m) which likely represents location of foundation for windmill base.
