Situated on the crest of a hill, sloping very slightly to the SE. A circular, grass-covered, raised area (diam. 38m N-S; 39.4m E-W) defined by a poorly preserved inner bank (Wth 4.4m; int. H 0.13m; ext. H 1.74m) and an external fosse (Wth 4.6m; D 0.35m) not visible at W. The bank is much denuded and reduced to a scarp in places. A gap (Wth 4m) in the NE quadrant represent the original entrance. The interior has a slight rise towards the W half. A possible tower house (TN027-163002) is surrounded to the W and N by earthworks indicative of a deserted settlement, including house platforms, a sunken way and field systems. According to the landowner the earthworks extended into the field to the S but have been levelled in recent years. In an early seventeenth-century Inquisition on the property of Gerald Grace the 'castle, towne and lands of Tollowmoyline' are listed (Gleeson and Leask 1938, 214). Situated immediately W of an old river course which has been straightened, in a low-lying position on the W bank of the River Dolla. Described in the Civil Survey (1654-6) as the 'old rotten walls of a castle with one thatcht house and five cabbins' (Simington 1934, vol. 2, 238). Wm Glysane and John Grace are listed as proprietors in 1640 (ibid.). A 'castle' is depicted on the seventeenth-century Down Survey map roughly in this area. Two millstones were found in the immediate vicinity. The limestone rubble foundations of a tower house (dims. c. 7.8m N-S; c. 9.7m E-W; wall T c. 1.2-2.5m; H 0.4m) are located at the S end of a low earthen mound, aligned N-S (c. 34m N-S; 26.7m E-W) and defined by a scarp (H 0.85m on W side to 2.47m on E side). The foundations of the tower house has rounded angles. The field within which the remains of the tower house are situated has well-preserved earthworks - the remains of a deserted village (TN027-163---), including house platforms, a sunken way (TN027-163003-) and an adjacent field system. Located in a low-lying position adjacent to the River Dolla. Not marked on the 1st or 2nd ed. OS 6-inch maps but noted on an aerial photograph GSIAP, R 117/8. It runs N-S through a deserted settlement (TN027-163001)) and continues beyond it, extending N parallel to the River Dolla before turning E-W at the fording point of the river. A water mill is marked on the Down Survey on the River Dolla adjacent to a castle (TN027-163002) and deserted settlement (TN027-163). According to the landowner large wooden planks were removed from this stretch of river during river work. Nearby to the N of the site, two millstones, one unfinished, were recovered from the land. One, with a central perforation, is now missing. The other stone, without a central perforation, is in the nearby farmyard. It is of limestone, painted grey (diam. 0.58m; T 0.1m).
