Situated on a rise in a low-lying landscape with the N-S Douglas stream c. 200m to the W. This is the parish church of Clonea within a D-shaped graveyard (dims. c. 30m E-W; c. 25m N-S) defined by stone walls, but farm buildings impinge on the church and graveyard at the N and E. This is a nave (ext. dims. 14.5m E-W; 9.05m N-S) and chancel church, of which only the nave survives almost complete, except the N nave wall. There is a destroyed doorway towards the W end of the S wall, with a blocked tomb-recess and a transitional round-headed window embrasure towards its E end. A pointed chancel arch (Wth 2.2m; H 2.9m), probably inserted, leads to the chancel, which can no longer be discerned. There is evidence of a window in the N nave wall similar to that in the S wall. The site of Clonea castle (WA031-038----) is c. 240m to the SSW. (Power 1897b, 3-5) Power, Rev. P. (1897b) The ancient ruined churches of Co. Waterford. WAJ 3, 3-12, 72-8; 216-227. Located in pasture on a slight rise in a level, low-lying landscape, with the canalised N-S Douglas stream c. 60m to the W. It is marked faintly as a two-cell structure on the 1840 ed. of the OS 6-inch map. There are no references to a castle here, although the land was owned by Theobald Fitzgerald in 1640 (Simington 1942, 76). Nothing is visible at ground level. Situated on rock outcrop at the edge of the shore on Clonea strand. Marked as an ancient castle on the the 1840 ed. of the OS 6-inch map, but it is not an antiquity. It was built by the Maguire family, probably in the late 18th or early 19th century, although it was said by J. O'Donovan c. 1840 to be on the site of a Fitzgerald castle (O'Flanagan, 1929, 39). Photographs taken c. 1940, and now in the Waterford County Museum in Dungarvan, show a rectangular tower of three storeys with some large windows and small lights. It was entered by a plain doorway at the N end of the SW side and had small stepped or plain crenalations. The tower fell in a storm in the winter of 1989-90, but the base of the NE and SE walls (T 0.9m; H c. 4m) survive. O'Flanagan, M.
