Franciscan friary which was founded by William Delamar in the thirteenth century and was reformed into an observant order in 1460 (Gwynn & Hadcock 1988, 241, 256). The patronage of the friary changed to the Nugents after the extinction of the Delamere line. In 1540 the friars had abandoned the friary which was described as consisting of 'a hall with buttery and kitchen, a church with cloister and a chapter-house beneath a dormitory, another hall with a chamber and other offices, all in sufficient repair, also a malt-house, brew-house and bakery, cemetery with a small wood, a garden, orchard and close, the site of 6 or more acres being surrounded with ditches of running water; outside were 43 acres of land, and a small island' (Gwynn & Hadcock 1988, 256). The friary was twice burnt and it was raided by the English at least six times between 1590 and 1617 (Gwynn & Hadcock 1988, 256). Today the franciscan abbey is still in use and incorporates portions of the medieval structure (SMR file). The medieval S transept forms the nave of the present Franciscan church.. Wall-mounted cast-iron post box, erected c.1915, with hooded letter opening and raised 'GR' and crown insignia over. Mounted within external face of rubble stone wall surrounding graveyard at Multyfarnham Abbey. Makers name appears at base in raised lettering ' F. Allen & Co. Attached Franciscan abbey, originally built c.1306, extended c.1450 with addition of crossing tower and transept (south), abandoned c.1650. Largely rebuilt from ruins c.1830 and renovated, c.1880, and extended and reordered c.1975, with reconstruction of chancel and addition of a modern sanctuary. Now comprising single-bay nave, two-bay chancel, two-bay transept to south and central three-stage crossing tower on square plan with battlemented parapet with Irish-style crenellations. Single-bay gable-fronted entrance porches to west end of nave and to west side of south transept. Pitched natural slate roofs with raised verges with stone coping, clay ridge tiles and cast-iron rainwater goods. Stone cross finials to nave and transept gables, decorative terracotta ridge cresting to transept. Constructed of coursed limestone rubble with cut limestone surrounds to openings and dressed limestone detailing. Pointed-arched openings with cut-stone tracery and hoodmouldings over. Single triple-light medieval window, c.1450, with reticulated tracery to transept gable. Window to chancel gable taken from Presbyterian church at Tully, Co. Longford and built into new chancel, c.1975. Pointed-arch opening to entrances porches with replacement glazed timber doors and overlights with stained glass over. Paired ogee-headed openings to belfry (second stage of crossing tower) with timber louvered vents. Church interior now stripped of any early render/plaster with exposed rubble limestone walls. A number of (moved) inscribed early seventeenth century memorial slabs remain to interior. Set back from road in mature landscaped grounds with monastery to north, a walled graveyard to south and gardens to west with stations of the cross. - The Abbey, friary, 1870–1900, Regional interest, registry number 15304014, https://www.buildingsofireland.ie/niah/search.jsp?type=record&county=WM®no=15304014. Extensive complex of two-storey buildings, originally built c.1880 as a Franciscan Friary on site of the original medieval cloisters of Multyfarnham Abbey. Later in use as a secondary school until c.1956 when converted to use as an agricultural college. Now partially in use as a Franciscan Friary. Comprises two main blocks. Block to south consists of a nine-bay two-storey building with two gable-fronted breakfronts, c.1880, with a sixteen-bay two-storey block to north, c.1900. Hipped and pitched natural slate roofs with clay ridge tiles, cast-iron rainwater goods and rendered chimneystacks. Smooth rendered walls with ruled-and-lined finish to northern block. Square-headed window openings with replacement windows, pointed arch-headed openings to projecting breakfronts to south block. Main entrance to north breakfront on south building with a square-headed opening, timber double-doors with leaded overlight above, surrounded by rendered surround comprising pilasters on square plan with console brackets supporting overhanging canopy porch. Statue of Virgin Mary above to gable in pointed arch-headed niche. Set back from road in mature landscaped grounds adjoining friary church to south and two-storey ranges of buildings with timber sliding sash windows to east arranged around central courtyard. - The Abbey, bridge, 1830–1835, Regional interest, registry number 15304015, https://www.buildingsofireland.ie/niah/search.jsp?type=record&county=WM®no=15304015. Single-arch road bridge over River Gaine, built c.1833. Constructed of rubble limestone with cut limestone voussoirs to arch and crenellated coping to parapet. Widened on east side with shuttered concrete parapet walls. Inscribed limestone plaque to western parapet reads 'This bridge was erected at the expense of Mr. Patrick Keena of Cullen as a mark of regard for the Franciscan convent of Multyfarnham in pious memory of his son Master John Keena who died 28 July 1831'.
