Situated on top of a large ridge running E-W, in pasture, with extensive views in all directions. Annotated 'fort' and depicted on the 1837 OS Fair Plan map as an irregular-shaped enclosure. Shown on the revised 1910 ed. OS 25-inch map as a roughly oval-shaped tree-lined enclosure (50m NE-SW; 33m NW-SE). Monument described in 1979 as an oval-shaped area enclosed by a low bank of earth and stone. The bank is very sharp and appears relatively modern having probably been constructed when the planting was done. There is no definite trace of an external fosse. A narrow drain-like depression to W appears to be part of an older field system which can be seen in the vicinity. Old cultivation ridges running E-W are visible to S and W. The interior has a N-facing slope and has been used to deposit field clearance stones and for quarrying in the NE quadrant. This monument may originally have been a ringfort which has been modified and planted to form a tree ring in the post-1700 period. The files of the National Museum of Ireland records that in July 1954 human remains were discovered during land reclamation works at Ballard, near Kilbeggan, Co. Westmeath (Cahill & Sikora 2011, vol. 2, 518). A human skull was discovered at a depth of 0.5m below ground level, and was broken upon discovery. The site was visited by Breandán Ó Ríordáin. The remainder of the burial was found in situ, extended and oriented west-north-west/east-south-east. There was no evidence for any grave structure or associated artefacts. The area surrounding the excavation is slightly elevated, and approximately 4m north of the bones on the natural rise is a clump of bushes with a number of large stones concealed from view. It was not possible to say whether this was a monument or not. The SMR records only one site-a ringfort- in the townland, but Early Bronze Age cist burials are known from the adjacent townlands of Kilgaroan and Ardballymore. The human remains were not acquired (NMI File). Detached five-bay two-storey over basement house, built or rebuilt c.1830. Hipped slate roof with overhanging eaves, rendered chimneystacks and cast-iron rainwater goods. Wet dash rendered walls over plinth course with a smooth rendered band at eaves level and quoins to the corners. Square-headed window openings with rendered architraves and replacement windows, timber casement windows to the ground floor openings and uPVC to the second floor openings. Central round-headed door opening with rendered architraved surround and a replacement timber door having a plain overlight above. Doorcase flanked to either side by tripartite/Wyatt window openings. Limestone steps flanked to either side by cast-iron railings give access to doorway. Set back from road in extensive mature grounds to the south of Horseleap, adjacent to border with Co. Offaly to the west. Complex of outbuildings to the rear (west). Main entrance gates to the southwest comprising a pair of rendered gate piers, on square-plan with moulded capstones over, supporting a pair of decorative cast-iron gates. - Gates/railings/walls, 1840–1880, Regional interest, registry number 15403709, https://www.buildingsofireland.ie/niah/search.jsp?type=record&county=WM®no=15403709. Field gates, erected c.1860, comprising a pair of dressed limestone gate piers, on square-plan with moulded cut limestone capstones over, supporting a pair of wrought-iron double gates with decorative finials and curled clasps. Central gate piers flanked by smaller outer cut limestone gate piers on square-plan with pyramidal capstones over. Boundary wall runs away to the east and west.
