Located in poorly drained marshy land, originally part of a much more extensive wetland stretching between Moyvoughley and Ballinderry Lough. No surface remains visible of crannóg excavated in 1932 (O'Neill 1936, 103-239). Crannóg described by O'Sullivan (2004, 50-1) as following; 'This is the early medieval crannóg known as Ballinderry No. 1, excavated in 1932 by the Harvard Archaeological Mission. The site was located in low-lying, marshy ground, but was probably enclosed by water towards the end of its occupation. It was a large, multi-phase crannóg (dims. 20m N-S x 33m E-W), evolving across time from a rectangular timber platform to a ‘classic’ palisaded crannóg. In Phase 1 (late 10th century), the site had a pre-crannóg occupation phase consisting of a rectangular wooden house built on a platform ringed with piles. Artefactual finds included weaponry, tools, metalworking detritus, personal items and some distinctive Viking objects including an iron sword, longbow and gaming board. In Phase 2 (early to mid 11th century), the primary crannóg (diam. 15m) consisted of a circular wooden house (diam. 5m) surrounded by walkway of a horseshoe arrangement of timber, all retained within a palisade. Finds from its sub-structural layers included bronze pins, iron knives, stone hones, leather shoe, wooden buckets. Finds from its occupation layers included copper alloy pins, brooch, hones, antler, blue glass, a silver kite shaped brooch, ringed pins, bone combs, millstone, as well as iron tools, wooden buckets and ladles. In Phase 3 (early to mid 11th century), there was a crannóg with a large pile palisade, entrance and quay. In Phase 4 (mid to late 11th century), the crannóg was surrounded by a plank palisade, within which there were three possible houses represented by rectilinear mounds or hearths of ash. Finds included an iron knife, ringed-pin, bone pins and possibly a bronze hanging lamp. By Phase 5, the site had been abandoned, being covered by dark humus, but there may have been intermittent activity in the late middle ages (including the deposition of tools, coins, etc). The cultural background of the site’s inhabitants remains intriguing, suggesting that these were indeed a Hiberno-Norse group, but in its latter phases it was probably a Gaelic Irish crannog, whose owners had access to objects from Hiberno-Norse Dublin, as might be expected in the midlands o f the tenth to eleventh century AD. It was probably also a high-status occupation site, given the impressive architecture o f the houses, palisades, gateways and the richness of the finds' (Johnson 1999, 23-71). Situated on a small hillock, in pasture, with extensive views to the NE, E and SE and overlooked by a higher ridge to W. Ringfort (WM031-077----) lies c. 120m to E. Depicted on the 1910 ed. OS 25-inch map as a circular-shaped earthwork. Monument described in 1979 as a roughly circular-shaped area (dims. 37m E-W; 36m N-S) enclosed by an earthen bank and external fosse. The bank is best preserved from NW-N-NE and from SE-S-SW, but is very faint from SW-W-NW and from NE-E-SE. The fosse is best preserved from N-NE and from SE-S-SW and is very shallow from SW-W-NW-N. There is no indication of an original entrance. The interior has a SE-facing slope and an uneven surface with no features visible. Detached four-bay two-storey country house, built c.1870, having full-height two-gable fronted bays to the south end of the main elevation (east) and a multi-bay two-storey return to the rear (west). Two-storey box bay window to the southern most bay and two single-storey flat-roof canted bays to the north end of the main elevation (east). Pitched natural slate roofs with moulded red brick eaves cornice, red clay ridge tiles and rendered chimneystack. Terracotta finials to gable ends. Cast-iron rainwater goods. Cement rendered walls having square-headed window openings with one-over-one pane timber sliding sash windows, paired to the two northern bays and grouped in three to the box bay window. Rendered block-and-start surrounds to the majority of the first floor openings. Square-headed door opening to the second gabled bay from the south having rendered block-and-start surround and a timber panelled door having an overlight above. Set back from road in own grounds with a substantial complex of outbuildings (15403018) to the rear (west). Crenellated boundary wall to the northeast of house. Complex of two-storey outbuildings, stables and former worker’s houses to the rear of Ballinderry House (15403017), built 1870 and possibly incorporated the fabric of earlier buildings. Complex comprises a two-storey stable block range to the north, now derelict, and a two-storey range to the south, divided into four three-bay units (possibly built as worker’s houses) and now in use as private dwellings. Pitched natural slate roofs, hipped to one corner, having rendered chimneystacks. Roughly coursed limestone rubble walls with square-headed openings having block-and-start surrounds. Remains of early fittings to range to the north and replacement fittings to buildings to the south. No openings to north face of range to the north, overlooking road. Former coach house, having a segmental-headed carriage arch with timber double doors, to the west end of range to south with a integral segmental-headed carriage built into a section of rubble limestone walling to the east end.
