Situated on a ridge in rushy grassland. Railway line 100m to W. Ringfort (WM011-070----) 360m to SE. A sub-circular shaped area (38m E-W; 40m N-S) enclosed by a two banks of earth and stone and an intervening shallow fosse. The inner bank is low, and the outer bank is very poorly preserved, with only slight traces visible. The uneven interior rises towards the centre. A sub-circular shaped area (approx. diam. 46m E-W) enclosed by a substantial earth and stone bank and external fosse. The interior is flat, and is overgrown with trees. Situated on rising ground in grassland that has been planted with trees. Railway line 240m to W. Ringfort (WM011-070---) 200m to NNW. Clanhugh Demesne 270m to S with gate lodge 290m to SSE. Depicted as a tree-ring and not as an antiquity on the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map with similar tree-ring 140m to S. Possible ringfort that was re-used as a tree-ring in the post 1700 period. Alternatively the earthwork may have been built as a tree-ring in the post 1700 period. A sub-circular shaped area (approx. diam. 46m NW-SE; 50m NE-SW) enclosed by a wide low earthen bank and external fosse. The steep sides of the fosse suggest that it has been re-dug in modern times possibly when the site was landscaped as a tree-ring. The interior slopes from NE-SW and contains spruce trees planted in the 19th century. A field fence running NNE-SSW intersects the monument at NE. ## Architectural heritage (National Inventory of Architectural Heritage)

- Clonhugh Railway Station, railway station, 1850–1860, Regional interest, registry number 15401123, https://www.buildingsofireland.ie/niah/search.jsp?type=record&county=WM&regno=15401123. Detached gable-fronted two-bay two-storey former railway station and station master's house, built c.1855. Now in use as a private dwelling. Pitched artificial slate roof with wide overhanging eaves, cast-iron rainwater goods and three moulded brick chimneystacks (one modern). Constructed of snecked limestone over projecting chamfered cut stone plinth with rusticated limestone quoins to corners. Cut stone plaque to gable-fronted section facing railway tracks (west) with carved inscription 'Clonhugh'. Square-headed window openings with surviving two-over-two pane timber sliding sash windows with cut stone sills to north elevation, replacement uPVC and concrete sills to modified main elevation (west). Square-headed doorcase to west elevation with replacement glazed timber door. Situated adjacent to Mullingar to Sligo railway line, close to the shores of Lough Owel. Modern single-storey extension to southeast side with overhanging eaves and timber casement windows.
- RIC barracks, 1820–1830, Regional interest, registry number 15401201, https://www.buildingsofireland.ie/niah/search.jsp?type=record&county=WM&regno=15401201. Detached two-bay two storey former Royal Irish Constabulary barracks, built c.1828, with projecting two-storey single-bay towers on square plan to southeast and northwest corners. Later is use as a post office, now in use as a private dwelling. Hipped natural slate roofs (graded) with cast-iron rainwater goods and a cut stone chimneystack to centre. Constructed of coursed rubble limestone with chamfered cut stone plinth to base and flush cut stone quoins to corners. Cut stone plaque to south-facing elevation at first floor level no longer legible. Square-headed window openings with flush cut stone surrounds, horizontal sliding cast-iron diamond pane windows with central mullion and cut stone sills. Cast-iron bars to ground floor window openings. Square-headed doorcase to west face of southeast tower with flush cut stone surround and timber door. Set back from road in own grounds adjacent to main Dublin-Sligo road.
- Ardilaun House, level crossing, gates/railings/walls, 1850–1860, Regional interest, registry number 15401202, https://www.buildingsofireland.ie/niah/search.jsp?type=record&county=WM&regno=15401202. Gateway/crossing gates giving access to Ardilaun House, previously Woodland, across Dublin-Sligo railway line, erected c.1855. Comprises pair of decorative wrought-iron gates with cast-iron gate piers. Cast-iron Greek anthemion decoration to gate piers. Wrought-iron turnstiles to east side of each gate. Located adjacent to associated gate lodge (15401203) at entrance to Ardilaun House.
