- WM026-012: Ringfort - rath, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CWM026-012----. Situated on a slight rise, in gently undulating pasture, with good views in most directions. Ringforts (WM026-013----/-011----) lie. c. 122m to SE and c. 157m to SW, respectively. Monument described in 1971 as an oval-shaped area (30m E-W; 29.5m N-S) enclosed by an inner bank, an intervening fosse and an outer bank. A gap (Wth at top 3.8m; basal Wth 1.7m) in the inner bank at E may represent the entrance. A wide gap in the inner bank at SW appears modern. The inner bank is high and steep and is best preserved at NNW. Elsewhere it is almost reduced to a scarp and it has several small disturbance gaps. There is a wide shallow fosse which is present all around yet is almost completely filled up from NW-N-E-SE. The outer bank is best preserved from S-W-NW, is absent from NW-N-E-SE and is quite degraded from SE-S and having a disturbance gap at WSW. Two old field banks intersect the site of the outer bank at NNW. The interior has a gentle E-facing slope. An irregular-shaped depression is located just inside the bank at SW and some stones are visible in the side of it although there is no definite indication that they are formally set. Situated on a slight rise, in relatively low lying, gently undulating pasture, with views restricted due to surrounding higher ground. Earthwork (WM026-104----) lies c. 70m to NE. Depicted on the 1837 OS Fair Plan map as a circular-shaped earthwork annotated ‘fort’. Monument described in 1971 as a much disturbed oval-shaped area (approx. dims. 36m NE-SW; 28m NW-SE) defined by a scarp and external fosse with entrance represented by a slight ramp (Wth at top 2m; overall Wth 5.6m) at E. The scarp (H 1.1m) is visible from NNE-E-S-W and is levelled from W-N-NNE. There is a large hole dug into the base of the scarp at WSW. There are traces of a narrow and shallow fosse which is visible all around although is very vague at SSE. The interior rises from the perimeter towards the centre and has vague traces of cultivation ridges running NE-SW. Compiled by Alison McQueen, Vera Rahilly and Caimin O’Brien. Situated on top of a small rise, in gently undulating pasture, with extensive views to SSW. Depicted on the 1840 ed. OS 6-inch map as a circular-shaped earthwork. Monument described in 1971 as a partially levelled roughly circular-shaped area (dims. 33m NNE-SSW31.5m ESE-WNW) enclosed by a bank (int. H 0.25m; ext. H 1.8m; Wth at top 0.6m; basal Wth 6.2m) from S-W-N-NNE. The bank is reduced to a low profile levelled scarp from NNE-E-S which appears to be slightly outside the original line of the perimeter. There is no visible trace of an external fosse. A large portion of the bank has been dug away at WNW where a field bank intersects the scarp. Another field bank intersects the scarp at N. The original entrance is not visible. The interior rises from the perimeter towards the centre and contains no obvious features. See attached profile surveyed and drawn by the ASI. - WM026-107: Cist, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CWM026-107----. The cist was discovered in a disused gravel quarry by the children of the landowner in May 1987. It was a rectangular stone built structure (1.0m x 0.6m), roofed by a single capstone and orientated in a north-east/ south-west direction. It contained a crouched adult inhumation with a tripartite bowl food vessel, in a good state of preservation, placed behind its shoulders and a cremation deposited on top of its legs. An adjoining stone-lined, bucket shaped pit contained the cremated remains of at least one individual. The food vessel is now in the National Museum of Ireland and the human remains are presently being examined in the Dept. of Anatomy in U.C.C.
