- WM030-028: Ringfort - rath, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CWM030-028----. Situated on flat grassland with good views in all directions. Poorly preserved circular-shaped ringfort (approx. diam. 33m) bisected by a field boundary consisting of a stone wall running ESE-WNW which is clearly visible on Bing Maps aerial photograph taken November 2011. This monument was described in 1973 as following: 'This earthwork has been almost completely levelled. It is possible to trace the outline of the monument in the grass. This was a ringfort. The northern half is not quite as badly defaced as the southern part. The site is divided in two by a wall running east-west' (SMR File 30/03/1973). Depicted as a circular shaped earthwork bisected by a tree-lined field boundary on 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map. Present remains consist of a slightly raised circular area (overall diam. c. 41m E-W; int. diam. 30m E-W) defined by an earthen bank which has been reduced to a scarp with stone wall (H 1.5m; wall T 0.8m) running across centre of monument. The N half of the ringfort has been degraded by agricultural practices and consists of a sunken or dished interior defined by a scarp in contrast to the S half of the monument which has a slightly raised interior defined by a low earthen bank (Wth 4m; ext. Situated on poorly drained land, in the middle of a flat pasture field, on the N side of a small valley. Depicted on the revised 1910 ed. OS 25-inch map as a well named ‘Tobernakill’. Carn Castle (WM030-030----) lies c. 100m to SE. Levelled monument described in 1983 as no surface remains visible as it is now sealed with concrete. Carn Castle situated on a rise, in gently undulating pasture. Levelled castle which stood in the centre of a bawn (WM030-030001-). Holy well (WM030-029----) named ‘Tobernakill’ lies c. 100m to NW, a settlement cluster (WM030-0123----) lies c. 160m to S. Annotated ‘a castle in repaire’ on the Down Survey map of Ballyloughloe parish and described in the terrier of this map as; ‘In Carne there is a castle in repaire’ (NLI, MS 723-4). On this map the castle is depicted as a tower house with a two storey house attached to one side of the tower. In 1641 the castle stood on lands belonging to 'Awly McGawley' who is listed as an 'Irish papist' (ibid.). Depicted on the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map as a rectangular-shaped building enclosed by a bawn wall. Monument described in 1973 as no surface remains visible. Carn castle (WM030-030----) and bawn stands on a rise, in gently undulating pasture. Holy well (WM030-029----) named ‘Tobernakill’ lies c. 90m to NW, a settlement cluster (WM030-123---) lies c. 125m to S. Depicted on the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map as a rectangular-shaped enclosure containing several buildings including ‘Carn Castle’ (WM030-030----) which is shown as a square shaped building in the centre of the bawn. Depicted on the revised 1910 ed. OS 25-inch map as a subrectangular-shaped enclosure (approx. dims. 52m NE-SW; 45m NW-SE) with a circular-shaped flanking tower at the S, SW and N corners and containing several buildings including ‘Carn Castle (in Ruins)’. On this map the NE wall of the bawn no longer remains upstanding. Monument described in 1973 as the remains of a roughly rectangular-shaped enclosure. The southern wall has circular corner towers at the ends. The northern wall appears to be relatively modern. The interior is uneven and now houses cattle. There is a hay barn built against the east wall. Some old field banks are visible to S and W. A deep stone lined well or pump hole lies c. 50m to SW. Monument is visible today as a subrectangular-shaped bawn on Digital Globe aerial photography. Bawn described by Salter (2004, 147) as following; 'The 38m long SW side of a bawn built by the Magawley family has a loopholed wall 2.5m high with a circular flanker 4.2m in diameter at each end also with gunloops. Also surviving are the featureless 50m long SE wall, and a retaining wall on the NW side which faced a slope and had a slight angle near the middle of its length'. Situated on a N-facing slope of quite a steep ridge, in gently undulating pasture. Settlement cluster (WM030-123----) lies c. 15m to NW. Annotated ‘Earthwork’ on Larkin’s 1808 map of Co. Westmeath (NLI, MS 46,580). Depicted on the revised 1910 ed. OS 25-inch map as a small coppice of trees. Levelled monument described in 1979 as no surface remains visible. There are numerous rock outcrops across this area and perhaps the earthwork was situated on one of these. A number of tree stumps can be seen forming an arc against the SE side of a field wall running NE-SW, which would correspond to the small coppice of trees depicted on the 1910 OS map. Levelled monument is visible today on Digital Globe aerial photography as a roughly circular-shaped cropmark (approx. dims. 22m NW-SE; 21m NE-SW). Situated on a rise, on the summit of a large ridge running N-S, in pasture, with extensive views of the surrounding landscape. Depicted on the revised 1910 ed. OS 25-inch map as a subcircular-shaped earthwork. Monument described in 1973 as a roughly circular-shaped area (diam. 35m) defined by a bank and external fosse. The earthen bank is best preserved from S-SE and elsewhere is low and almost reduced to a scarp. The remains of a small stone shed have been cut into the bank at NNE. There is a narrow ledge-like feature at the base of the bank at S. The fosse is narrow and shallow and is best preserved from SW-W-NW. The perimeter has been incorporated into a modern field fence from NE-E-SE. A second field fence runs NW-SE to the immediate N of the monument. There are no indications of an entrance but there is a disturbance gap at W. The interior rises slightly to the centre from the N and W. Monument is visible today as a roughly circular-shaped tree-lined earthwork on Digital Globe aerial photography. Compiled by Alison McQueen, Vera Rahilly and Caimin O’Brien. Aerial photograph (GB91.DM.07) shows an extensive sequence of low banks forming small cellular plots and the foundations of one rectangular house. These low-level earthworks were photographed in May 1991. Carn Castle (WM030-030) and a well indicated as Tobernakill (WM030-029) are located 150m and 240m to the N respectively.
