There is no trace of the scarp delimiting the site which was described in previous reports and it appears that this has been levelled out to blend in with the natural scarp of the ridge. Near the base of the ridge, on the E side, there is a band of dark green grass, which may suggest the presence of a backfilled fosse. Situated on a steep, natural rise (109m/359ft OD), in gently undulating pasture with good views in all directions. Ringfort (WM020-013----) lies c. 95m to S. Annotated 'Fort' on the 1837 OS Fair Plan map where it is depicted as an subrectilinear-shaped earthwork (approx. dims. 66m N-S; 48m E-W). Levelled monument described in 1970 as having just been deep ploughed. All that remains is a scarp (max. H 1.50m) extending from SSE-S-SSW, however this could be naturally formed. The plough has revealed two concentrations of stones within the interior; their significance is unknown. An ESB pole stands near the centre of the site. Monument is visible today as a faint cropmark of an irregular suboval-shaped earthwork on Digital Globe aerial photography. Situated at E end of a prominent hill with good views of Sion Hill and Lisnabin. Clonlost church (WM020-038----) and graveyard (WM020-038001-) located 260m to SE. Depicted as ‘Moat of Cornasop’ on 1837 Ordnance Survey Fair Plan map, but not depicted as an antiquity on any editions of the OS six-inch maps (SMR File). Poorly preserved mound on top of hillock which has been partially quarried away, with stones lying scattered all over surface of hillock. A large tree stands on top of the possible monument. Present remains consist of a poorly defined sub-trapezoidal shaped mound (20m NE-SW; 10m NW-SE; H 0.3m) with loose stones scattered around the top of the mound. The poor condition of the monument makes classification uncertain. It has been suggested that this could be the possible remains of a partially destroyed barrow (SMR File). Alternatively this may be a landscape feature associated with Clonlost House located 360m to SSE (SMR File 04/03/1998). This feature is depicted as a grove of trees on the landscape demesne lands of Clonlost House on the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map. The cartographic evidence would suggest that this mound is a landscape feature of post medieval date rather than a prehistoric burial mound. Monument surveyed in 2015 and described by McGuinness (2015, 46-7) as following: ‘Small but complex site including a small cairn atop an unusual earthwork which comprises an irregularly oval-shaped, flattened area created by scarping upper surface of a glacial hillock, the scarp being clearest on E and S sides; a mature sycamore grows near centre of site. Cairn comprises a sub-circular pile of stones (Diam. 3.4m N-S x 2.6M E-W; H. 0.58m on E side) partly covered in soil and grass; it is unclear whether it is the result of field clearance or an ancient feature, although the monument is marked ‘Moat of Cornasop’ on OS Fair Plan from 1830s according to SMR file, which is suggestive of a carn or cairn. Where highest and best defined at E, 5.10m to E of cairn, scarp reaches a height of 0.68m; overall height of monument from top of cairn to base of scarp at E is 1.34m. At W end, scarp seems to reach a point, like one half of an eye, 14.40m to W of cairn; this may represent a lower step, the W edge of the upper step possibly extending only 6.5m to W of cairn, just W of the sycamore, although this ‘edge’ could well be an effect produced by the partly-exposed curving roots of the sycamore. If genuine, this upper scarp or step (L. 16.7m E-W) is roughly centred on the cairn but it is markedly sub-circular in shape. Whether or not the upper step is genuine, the overall monument is approximately eye-shaped, its maximum length from base of scarp at E to base of scarp at W being 28.2m; the maximum width from N to S, running through the cairn at broader E end of earthwork, is 16.1m. Midway along S side of scarp it dips in as a V-shaped notch 2.4m in depth and 5.9m across at the mouth, but it is unclear whether this is intentional or due to erosion. Monument is located on summit of prominent hillock (kame?) overlooking a stream flowing SW-NE, with excellent views all round bar the SW, where there is a small deciduous wood. A large kettle-hole lake lies c. 200m to N; a smaller example lies SE of this. Immediately SW of pointed W end of scarped area is a crescent shaped scoop or hollow with high back wall and low bank at its mouth on the downhill side; a second such hollow lies 7.3m to SE of scarped area, its mouth with low bank opening to SE. Such hollows are common on sloping ground in the Westmeath landscape, occasionally near other barrows (e.g. WM013-016----; WM027-020----), and appear to be ‘dead-ice hollows’ of glacial origin. About 250m to SE is a ruined medieval church (WM020-038---) in a burial ground (WM020-038001-); drawing on extensive comparative evidence, Leo Swan (1988, 26) attributed an early medieval date to the site on the grounds that the curve of the roadway to N, E and SE of the burial ground appears to preserve the line of a diagnostic curvilinear vallum (WM020-038002-) surrounding the site, which comes within c. 100m of the barrow. Understandably the identification of this monument as a barrow, even a heavily denuded one, has been treated with scepticism by more than one ASI fieldworker, the earliest account concluding that ‘This may be the site of a destroyed barrow, but in its present state it is impossible to say with certainty’ [SMR file], while the more recent account (4/3/98) is more decisive: I very much doubt that this is A barrow. It may simply represent a landscape feature associated with the house that was nearby; alternatively it may be a platform for a windmill associated with late medieval settlement in the area. [SMR file] To an extent the present writer shares these other archaeologists’ doubts over the status of this monument, but its striking location atop a glacial hillock beside two dead-ice hollows, and its creation by shaping that hillock, are both features seen among the range of barrows to be seen in Westmeath; and, if the cairn is ancient, its eccentric position on the scarped area or lower platform compares with the positioning of the upper mound on some of the stepped-barrows of Westmeath (McGuinness 2013, 12). Situated in pasture. Depicted on the revised 1913 ed. OS 25-inch map as a roughly circular bivallate enclosure (approx. overall dims. 61m N-S; 60m E-W). Ringfort (WM020-035----) lies c. 50m to ESE. Monument described in 1970 as a roughly circular-shaped area defined by two widely spaced banks which are almost reduced to a scarp in each case. The inner scarp defines a suboval area and is higher than the outer. The wide counterscarp defines a circular area and is not concentric with the inner. Old tree-stumps are visible growing on this intervening space. A modern field bank has been constructed against the foot of the outer scarp from ENE-E-SSE. The entrance is represented by a gap in each bank at SSE. A radial bank intersects the W sides of the gaps. There is a second radial bank at NNE. The interior rises slightly from the perimeter and some stones protrude above the surface. Traces of a hut site (WM020-034001-) are visible within the centre of the interior. St Columbkille’s Well lies 50m E of Clonlost House. Depicted on the OS 6-inch map as a roughly rectangular-shaped well. Ringfort (WM020-036----) lies c. 65m to SE. Monument described in 1970 as a roughly rectangular-shaped, open well defined by a stone wall on three sides and by a short flight of steps on the fourth side. The level of the water is c. 1m below the present ground surface and appears reasonably clean. The ground in the immediate vicinity of the well is strewn with rocks and rubble derived from the demolished farmyard. Area around holy well has been incorporated into a large field and there is no visible surface trace of the well today on Digital Globe aerial photography. Situated in woodland, in the centre of Clonlost graveyard (WM020-038001-), c. 55m N of a farmyard and c. 115m N of the site of Clonlost House. St Columbkille’s Well (WM020-037----) lies c. 110m to SE. Depicted on the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map as a rectangular-shaped structure orientated N-S, annotated ‘Church’, within a pentagonal-shaped graveyard. Depicted on the 1913 ed. OS 25-inch map as a rectangular-shaped structure orientated E-W and annotated ‘Church (in Ruins)’, within a sub-rectangular-shaped graveyard. No church is depicted at this location on the 1657 Down Survey map of Rathconnell Parish which in 1641 stood on lands belonging to Thomas Nugent who is listed as a Protestant landowner (NLI MS 723-4). Clonlost Church stands in the parish of Rathconnell and was probably a medieval chapel of ease or a manorial church belonging to the Nugent family who resided at Clonlost and was later converted into a Nugent family mausoleum from the 17th century onwards. In 1710 Thomas Nugent of Cushenstown, Co. Westmeath stated in his will that he was to be 'buried with his ancestors in the church of Clonlost, where some of his children are buried' (Ainsworth and MacLysaght 1958, 168). In 1727 Walter Nugent of Carpenterstown, Co. Westmeath requested to be buried in 'his ancestors' burying place at Clonlost' (ibid., 175). Clonlost Church ruins consists of a small ivy-covered rectangular-shaped building with walls standing to full height. This multi-period structure appears to be the remains of a small medieval church which was converted into the Nugent family burial place from the 17th century onwards. The remains of a Nugent chest tomb dating rom 1672 stands in SE corner of church with 19th century memorial to N in NE corner of church. At the W end of the church are the remains of several other vaulted crypts belonging to the Nugent family which have been inserted into the floor of the church. A large capstone for one of these crypts is visible lying on the surface directly inside the doorway of the church The ivy-covered walls of the church (ext. dims. 8.6m E-W x 6.8m N-S; wall T 0.76m) survive to full height, although the present ivy-covered W wall appears to be later than the N and S walls and is not bonded into them. The entrance is through a pointed doorway (Wth 0.9m; H 1.9m) at W end of the S wall which has been reset into an earlier embrasure the rear-arches of which are visible over the cut stone archway. There is a plain round-headed single light window to W of the doorway set high into the wall and probably dates from the post-1700 period. There is a single light trefoil-headed window (Wth 0.3m) at E end of S wall with evidence for glazing groove and iron bar socket in the cut stone surround. A small, crude L-shaped aumbry (dims. H 0.3m x 0.3m W x 0.4m D ) is visible directly underneath the trefoil-headed window of 14th or 15th century date. There is a similar window in the centre of the E wall with a small cusped ogee-headed window, which is set into a wide embrasure and seems to be of earlier date. The corners of the embrasure are of sandstone, which may suggest a 13th century date. There are two small plain round-headed windows in the N wall. There are the remains of plaster visible on the W wall which may be post-1700 in date. The remainder of the church is in a ruinous state and obscured by ivy. Detached four-bay single-storey vernacular cottage, built c.1800, with windbreak porch (on semi-circular plan) to entrance front (east). Now derelict. Steeply pitched corrugated-iron roof with raised verges to either end, a single central rendered chimneystack and cast-iron rainwater goods. Roughcast rendered walls with buttress to south corner. Square-headed window openings with brick and stone sills having cast-iron multi-pane pivot casement windows. One-over-one pane timber sliding sash window to south gable. Square-headed doorcase to windbreak porch, door now missing. Set back from road in own grounds with outbuildings to the rear (west) and a rendered boundary wall to road frontage (east and south).

Detached three-bay two-storey house, built c.1850, with later advanced full-height gable-fronted single-bay breakfront to the centre of the entrance façade (north), built c.1900, creating T-plan. Single-bay single-storey entrance porch to the rear (south). Hipped and pitched natural slate roofs with two central rendered chimneystacks having terracotta chimney pots over. Cast-iron rainwater goods. Timber bargeboards to gable-fronted section (north). Pebbledashed walls over smooth rendered plinth with flush cut stone quoins to corners. Square-headed openings with rendered reveals cut stone sills and two-over-two pane timber sliding sash windows. Six-over-six pane timber sliding sash windows to first floor openings to rear (south). Round-headed doorcase to west face of projecting bay having cut-stone (flush) block-and-start surround, early timber panelled door with plain overlight above. Set back from the road in own grounds with tree-lined approach avenue running from entrance gates to the east. Extensive collection of single and two-storey rendered rubble stone outbuildings to the rear (south) and to the west having pitched natural slate roofs. Tree-lined approach avenue runs from main gates to house.
