Situated in pasture-land on the E facing slope of a prominent hill with wide views of the surrounding countryside. Lough Lene 400m to S. An oval-shaped area (approx. diam. 41m NW-SE; 32m E-W) enclosed by two earth and stone banks with intervening fosse and a possible entrance gap (Wth 1.3m) in the inner bank at SE. The outer bank only survives at W & N. The S side of the monument has been quarried into, with some disturbance at W also. The interior slopes from NW-SE. The remains of two rectangular house sites are visible in the W (WM008-008001-) and E (WM008-008002-) quadrants of the interior. In 1612 Robert Dillon of Cannorstown was granted 'a castle, a bawn, a mill, 20 houses' (Cal. pat. rolls Ire., Jas I, 228) in the townland of Cumerstown. In 1682 Sir Henry Piers of Tristernagh wrote that at the E end of Lough Lene there 'issueth out another considerable stream which in one quarter of a mile turneth a mill at Cummestown' (Vallancey 1786, 10). Depicted on OS 6-inch map probably the result of the levelling of the watercourse or tail race of the Corn Mill depicted on the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map. Situated in undulating pasture-land on W facing slope of a low natural ridge, with good views to the NW, NE & S. Post medieval corn mill and millrace possibly built on site of medieval watermill (WM008-026----) 110m to the SSW. Stream used as a millrace located 75m to W. The 1659 Down Survey map of Fore barony depicts a tower house type castle standing beside a stream in this general area (NLI MS 723-4). A sub-rectangular shaped mound of grass covered stones (dims. 15m N-S; 14.6m E-W; max. H 2m), with pieces of limestone masonry bonded with mortar along the perimeter of the mound at W & SSE marks the site of this castle depicted on the 1659 Down Survey map of St. Mary's parish (NLI MS 723-4). Two sub-rectangular shaped depressions (dims 7.8m N-S; 3.5m E-W; 4.8m N-S; 5.8m E-W) are visible on the surface of the mound. The land around the mound shows traces of old cultivation ridges running roughly E-W. There are faint indications of earthworks possibly belonging to a bawn wall to N of mound which are visible on Digital Globe aerial photograph taken November 2011. Situated on a slight natural rise in gently undulating pasture-land, with good views from NE-E-S-SW. Ringfort (WM008-037----) 400m to S. Depicted on the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map as a sub-circular shaped area (approx. diam. 48m N-S; 47m E-W), the E side of the monument intersected by a laneway running N-S. Situated on a rise in well drained undulating pasture-land with good views of the surrounding countryside. Lough Adeel 150m to SE. A sub-triangular shaped area (dims. 44m N-S x 42.4m E-W) enclosed by two low earth and stone banks with an intervening fosse. The inner bank is narrow, visible only from N-NE & from ESE-S-WSW, with a wide berm (max. Wth 3m) at S. The outer bank is visible from E-S-W. Situated on a slight natural rise in undulating grassland. Bog 35m to SW. Lough Adeel 450m to W. A sub-triangular shaped area (approx. dims. 58m NE-SW; 36m NW-SE) enclosed by two earthen banks and intervening fosse. The inner bank has been levelled along the W side of the monument. The outer bank is visible only from S-W. There is an entrance gap (Wth 1.5m) and causeway (Wth 3.5m; H 0.5m) across the fosse at S. The interior rises slightly towards the centre, and there are traces of cultivation ridges. A post-1837 field fence running NW-SE intersects the monument from N-NE. ## Architectural heritage (National Inventory of Architectural Heritage)

- House, 1760–1840, Regional interest, registry number 15400817, https://www.buildingsofireland.ie/niah/search.jsp?type=record&county=WM&regno=15400817. Detached four-bay single-storey thatched house with loft level, built c.1800, with windbreak porch on semi-circular plan to front façade (north). Hipped thatched roof with decorative rope ridge/scallop work and modern brick chimneystacks. Rubble limestone walls with whitewash render over. Square-headed window openings with stone sills and replacement timber top-hung timber casement windows. Square-headed door with replacement sheeted timber door set within curved projecting porch with continuous roof over. Modern flat-roofed extension to rear (south). Located adjacent to the roadside with mature garden to rear (south). Water pump to east facing side elevation, probably relocated.
