Monument surveyed by the ASI in 1971 and described as following; 'Completely demolished. There is a slight outward slope in the ground corresponding to the SW quadrant of the earthwork which is shown on the 1914 ed. OS 6-inch map. The site is largely overgrown with hazel etc. Sited on the top of a prominent rise and surrounded by gently undulating and hilly land of good meadow and pasture. Good views to the SSE-S and SW. The site would have been suitable for a rath' (SMR File 29/06/1971). Depicted as a sub-rectangular enclosure on the first edition of the OS 6-inch map. Depicted as a large oval-shaped ringfort on the first edition of the OS 6-inch map. Ringfort visible on 2005 OSI aerial photographs where the enclosing bank of the monument has been levelled from NNW through N to NNE, elsewhere the enclosing bank is visible as an earthen bank which has been incorporated into a field boundary enclosing a roughly circular area (diam. c. 59m E-W; 55m N-S). Monument surveyed by ASI in 1977 and described as following; 'The site is an oval earthen embankment. The embankment is quite high with steep sides and a flat top. The long axis of the platform (diam. 13m NE-SW; 10.5m NW-SE) lies NE-SW. There is no evidence for a bank or fosse or any other features associated with the site. The sides have been defaced by animals at all points, and there are rebbot burrows on the SE. The top is flat and no features are visible. The sides are overgrown with thorn bushes on the NE and W and there are young thorn bushes growing on the top. The site is on a small rise in good pasture land. It is overlooked by higher ground to the N and NE but there are extensive views to the NW, W, S and SE. Views of Slieve Bloom Mountains to the SW and ringfort (WM032-028----) 250m to the W. There is a modern electric fence on small stakes running roughly E-W past the site on the N. A number of small boulders and stone - field clearance, have been dumped against the site on the SW-S-E '(SMR File 13/09/1977). Ringfort (WM032-040----) located 250m to the SSW. Monument surveyed by ASI and described in 1977 as following; ‘A roughly circular enclosure (diam. 52m NW-SE; 36m NE-SW) bounded by a bank of earth and stone with an external fosse and an outer bank of earth and stone. The outer bank is best preserved from the NNW-W-S and it is absent from the N-E-SE. The fosse is best preserved from the NNW-W-S where it is wide and flat-bottomed but it is narrower and shallower from the N-E-SE probably as a result of the outer bank being leveled into it. The inner bank is best preserved on the N and NE and it is fainter elsewhere. Modern field fences run into the fosse on the E and W and the inner bank on the S is incorporated into a field fence. The fosse has been used as a dump for stones on the E and to a lesser extent elsewhere and there is a large pile of stones piled on the outer bank on the WNW. There is a causeway (Wth 3.5m) across the fosse on the NNW with gaps (Wth 5.5m) in both banks at either end of it, this is probably an original entrance. The end of the inner bank on the W side of the entrance has been defaced by recent digging, and its inner edge has been removed along with approx. half of the bank for c. 4m from the entrance. The interior is uneven and it rises from the perimeter towards the centre from the N, NE, E and SE. The W half of the interior is fairly level. No features are visible. The site is on fairly level ground, with pasture to the N, NE, NW and SW, with tillage to the E and SE. The site is overlooked by a large NW-SE ridge to the E with motte (WM032-039---) 190m on the height to the NE. There are good views to the NW, W and S ’ (ASI File 13/09/1977). Monument surveyed by ASI in 1977 and described as following; 'A roughly rectangular enclosure (dims. 36.5m NNW-SSE; 32.5m WSW-ENE) bounded by a low bank of stone and earth. The bank is best preserved on the N. In places, particularly on the W and E there are the remains of stone facings to be seen. Indeed at these points the bank has the appearance of being the grass-covered remains of a stone wall. There are natural slopes outside the bank on the N and E and at a short distance from it on the S. There are small gaps in the bank at the W and NE but neither looks like an original entrance. Old field banks run into the bank at the NE (running roughly N-S) and at the SW (running NW-SE). The interior is fairly level for the most part with a small raised area at the NW around a rectangular house site (WM032-041001-) which is in the NW corner of the site against the bank. There is a smaller house/hut site (WM032-041002-) against the bank on the E of the interior. The N and W walls of the larger house site are formed by the sites bank and its E and S walls by a slight bank of stone and earth with remains of stone facings at the SE corner and along the E wall. There are no internal features visible in the house site except for a small recess in the NE corner. The E wall of the small rectangular hut site is formed by the sites bank and its S, W and N walls by a low bank of earth and stone. There is a possible entrance in the S wall just at the SE corner. There is a small stretch of an earth and stone bank running in from the sites bank to the N of the hut site and this may form the N wall of a larger house/hut site whose S wall was formed by the N wall of the hut site. There is a slight drop in ground level between these two banks which may indicate the floor area of this house/hut site, but there is no trace of a W wall. There is a large boulder just S of the NW house site. The perimeter is partly overgrown with thorn trees. The site is on the E and higher end of a small ridge in undulating land of fairly good pasture. There are good views to the NW, W and SW, but the view to the N, E and S is blocked by the surrounding ridges' (SMR File 15/09/1977). Monument surveyed by ASI in 1971 and described as following; 'An approx. circular enclosure bounded by a scarp with remains of an earth and stone bank on its upper edge and with remains of a wide fosse and of an outer earth and stone bank at its foot. The inner bank appears to have remains of an internal stone facing but is very fragmentary. The original entrance way is not visible. The site is densely covered with whitethorn trees, blackthorn, hazel, briars etc. and satisfactory observation is impossible until it is partly cleared for the more detailed survey. Sited on the NW side of a hill of average pasture. The site is relatively lowlying. Dimensions not possible until the site is partly cleared' (SMR File 29/06/1971). - The Thatch, house, 1800–1840, Regional interest, registry number 15403202, https://www.buildingsofireland.ie/niah/search.jsp?type=record&county=WM&regno=15403202. Detached four-bay single-storey thatched house, built c.1820, having a direct-entry plan. Pitched thatched roof with decorative work to ridge. Rendered chimneystacks to the east gable end and to the centre. Smooth rendered walls with slight base batter having square-headed openings, irregularly placed, with replacement fittings. Set back from road at a right-angle to the road alignment. Main entrance gates to the south and single-storey outbuildings to the rear. Located to the southwest of Castletown Geoghegan.
