Situated on a slight rise in undulating grassland. Depicted on the 1837 OS Fair Plan maps as a sub-rectilinear shaped enclosure rounded at the NW corner, delimited by a broken line, and annotated ‘Site of Fennor Castle’. All that remains are the wall footings of a square shaped structure (approx. dims. 9m x 9m), probably the remains of a tower house standing inside a roughly oval-shaped earthwork (approx. diam. 27m). Fallen chunks of masonry and collapsed stones partly obscure the remains of what appears to be the wall footings of a tower house. Fennor Castle is not depicted on either the 1655-9 Down Survey parish map of Rathconnell or the Barony map of Moyashel and Magheradernon (NLI, MS 723-4). In 1641 the lands of Fennor belonged to Edward Nugent who is listed in the Down Survey as an ‘Irish Papist’. Situated on a long, irregularly shaped ridge in grassland, with good views to N and E. The road which marks the townland boundary with Battstown lies 170m to E, Fennor Castle (WM013-049----0 is 435m to W. Described in 1975 as an unusually large sub-circular shaped area (approx. diam. 54m N-S) enclosed by a low earth and stone bank and shallow external fosse. The interior is higher than the top of the bank, the bank having enclosed the top of a natural ridge. There is a possible entrance gap (Wth 2.5m) at ENE. A post 1837 field fence running N-S bisects the interior. The site appears to have been levelled along with the field boundary as only the cropmark of the monument is visible on Digital Globe aerial photograph taken November 2011. See attached profile of monument surveyed and drawn by the ASI. Compiled by: Frank Coyne and Caimin O'Brien Date of upload: 9 April 2018 - WM013-051: Barrow - mound barrow, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CWM013-051----. Monument surveyed in 2015 and described by McGuinness (2015, 37) as following: ‘Although difficult to examine because of extensive gorse bushes, other vegetation and a polygonal wooden fence clinging tightly to its base, this appears to be a tall, steep-sided mound (Diam. 18m NE-SW), almost conical with truncated top, rising to a height of 2.44m where this can be measured on NE side; the ASI, whose fieldworkers had better access to the site, give a height of 3-3.5m [SMR file]. Upper surface is difficult to examine but appears irregular and disturbed; a hollow in its SW side (3m x 2.8m) may be due to treasure-hunters, and a limestone flag (1.36m x 0.87m) at SW end of hollow, which rocks when pressure is applied and is hollow underneath, might possibly be part of a cist, presumably displaced by digging as was taken to be the case by an ASI fieldworker on 24/5/83, who noted this and a few other stones close by [SMR file]. Though barely visible now due to vegetation, the ASI also noted that ‘the sides have been dug into in several places notably on SW, NE and SE’ [SMR file]. Although identified as a bowl-barrow in the SMR file, there is no ditch surrounding this monument and it is best taken as a tumulus or mound-barrow. This large, prominent barrow is located on a very low rise in flattish pasture, with best visibility to N. No monument depicted on 1775 estate map which depicts field in which monument is located as ‘Moat Division’ (NLI, ) the barrow appears to be monument which gives it to the 'Moat' on estate map 21 F 80 (30).
