Situated on a rise in gently undulating pasture with good views in all directions. Depicted on the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map as a square-shaped enclosure shown in dotted outline (approx. dims. 22.5m NE-SW; 23m NW-SE) annotated ‘Site of Castle’. Depicted as an oblong-shaped mound (approx. dims. 24m NW-SE; 9m NE-SW) annotated ‘Castle (site of)’ on the revised 1913 ed. OS 6-inch map. No castle depicted in the townland of Glascarn on the Down Survey map of Mullingar parish (NLI, MS 723-4). The terrier of this map recorded that in 1641 the lands of Glascarn belonged to Alexander Hope (ibid.). Levelled castle site described in 1980 as a long rectangular-shaped earth and stone mound (approx. L 16m NW-SE; Wth 3m; max. H 4m) running NW-SE which probably represents the grass-covered rubble from the levelled castle. The mound is quite high and steep sided with a generally flat top which is narrow and has a gentle NW-facing slope. The W side of the mound curves inwards slightly where abundant small limestone rubble has been piled up. There is a second pile of limestone rubble to the immediate NW of the mound. There is no clear sign of masonry in the mound, although it would appear that the castle was levelled and the stones from it were neatly piled up, possibly along a ruined wall, although this is inconclusive. There are old cultivation ridges running NE-SW in the vicinity. Monument is visible as an oblong-shaped mound on Digital Globe aerial photography. Situated on a gentle E-facing slope, in undulating pasture, with fairly good views in all directions. Ringfort (WM018-124----) lies c. 90m to SE. Depicted on the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map as a circular-shaped earthwork abutting the public road to ESE. Depicted on the revised 1913 ed. OS 25-inch map as a circular-shaped earthwork truncated by a field boundary to NNE and the public road to ESE. Monument described in 1980 as an oval-shaped enclosure (dims. 34m N-S; 29.5m E-W) defined by a bank and external fosse with no entrance gap visible. The low bank of earth and stone is visible from E-S-W-WNW and there is internal stone facing from S-SSE. The bank has been reduced to a low scarp from WNW-N-E. A wide, deep fosse survives from S-W-NW and is shallow from NW-N where it is partially infilled. The fosse is absent from E-S where it is truncated by the public road which runs NE-SW just E of the site. The interior has a gentle E-facing slope. A modern field fence runs roughly NW-SE across the monument just N of centre. Monument visible today as a roughly oval-shaped tree-planted earthwork on Digital Globe aerial photography. Situated on a slight knoll, in pasture, with some modern houses to N. Not depicted on the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map or the 1913 ed. OS 25-inch map. Monument described in 1983 as a small standing stone (approx. H 0.5m) with a rectangular base which tapers to a pointed top. Monument is not visible on Digital Globe aerial photography. Compiled by: Alison McQueen, Vera Rahilly and Caimin O’Brien Date of upload: 08 February 2019 - WM018-124: Ringfort - rath, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CWM018-124----. Situated on a gentle E-facing slope, in slightly undulating pasture, with fairly good views in all directions. Ringfort (WM018-112----) lies c. 90m to NW. Depicted as a roughly circular-shaped earthwork on the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map. Depicted on the revised 1913 ed. OS 25-inch map as a much modified rectangular-shaped earthwork. Monument described in 1980 as a roughly subcircular-shaped earthwork (37.5m ENE-WSW; 34m NNW-SSE) enclosed by a bank, an intervening fosse and the remains of an outer bank. There is a large quarry depression which has disturbed the perimeter from SW-W-NW and a large portion of the interior in the SW and W quadrants. The low inner bank of earth and stone is best preserved from NNW-N-NE and E-S, but with a number of small gaps. A wide gap (Wth 5.5m) in the bank at E may represent the entrance, whilst a gap at SSW appears to be relatively modern. The intervening fosse is fairly wide and deep and survives from NNW-N-NNE and from SE-S, where it may have been recut. The outer bank of earth and stones only survives from NNW-N-NNE, where it is slight and from SE-S, where it is more substantial and may have been modified. The interior is much disturbed due to quarrying and the surviving portion slopes from the centre down to the perimeter at NE, E and SE. A modern laneway runs NW-SE just outside the perimeter to SW. Monument is visible as a subcircular-shaped tree-planted earthwork on Digital Globe aerial photography.
