Taghmon derived from the Irish Tigh/Teach Munna meaning the house of Munna a late sixth / early seventh century saint who died in 635. This saint was the son of Tulchán and has been variously assigned to belonging to either the Ceinéal Conaill of Donegal, the Corca Raoidhe [Corkaree] of Westmeath and the Corca Oiche of Limerick (Ó Riain 2011, 505). His feastday is commemorated on the 21st of October (Ibid., 507). Church building standing beside castle (WM012-074----) depicted on the 17th century Down Survey map of Corkaree Barony (NLI, MS 723-4). Medieval fortified church known as St. Munna's Church stands in the centre of a graveyard (WM012-076001-) with Taghmon Castle (WM012-074----) 150m to NW, motte and bailey (WM012-079----) castle 350m to SE. The church and graveyard appears to have been built on the site of the early Christian monastery (WM012-076003-) founded by St. Munna. Described in 1980 as following; ‘This is a rectangular church with a residential tower at the west end. Church and tower are the same width and appear to be contemporary. The church is entered by a gothic doorway of limestone with a mutilated sandstone head of a bishop above, at the west end of the north wall of the church. There is a blocked up doorway at the west end of the south wall. There are two single ogee headed windows in both the north and south walls. The windows are of sandstone with moulded hoods. The more westerly window in the north wall has a sheela-na-gig (WM012-076002-) above it (also of sandstone). The east window is a large pointed opening outlined by dressed limestone which appears to be 19th c. date. The original tracery and mullions are missing. The lower courses of the outer walls of the church and tower are battered and rise to their full height with stepped battlements protecting a wall walk. Inside the church is roofed with a high barrel vault. There is a fine piscina in the east end of the south wall. There are two aumbries to the west of it and a large aumbry in the east end of the north wall. The window opes are widely splayed within. There is no sign of a division between nave and chancel. The lower floor of the tower is vaulted and is entered only from the church by a simple pointed doorway at the southern end of the west wall. A doorway, simple pointed, at the north end of the west wall leads to a spiral stairs leading to apartments in the tower. A vaulted roof covers the second floor and forms the floor of the third floor. Each floor contains a rectangular room and a very small room off it. In all the tower is four storeys high. The upper storey, now open to the sky. Corbels and the line of a wooden roof can be still be seen above the top floor. A blocked doorway on the stairs leads out to the top part of the church. There appears to have been an apartment below the vaulted rood originally. A small slit window exists high in the south wall near the west end. This would have lighted an attic room above the nave. There is a garderobe in the west wall of the small room on the third floor. At the north end of the west wall of the tower (outside) is a sandstone head. The building measures 9.2m N-S by 20.8m E-W. The tower being 6m wide E-W. The church being 14.8m E-W (outside measurements). The church is set within a roughly rectangular graveyard (WM012-076001-) bounded by a bank. Described in 1980 as following; ‘The more westerly window in the north wall has a sheela-na-gig (WM012-076002-) above it (also of sandstone)’ (SMR File, 24/10/1980). Described by Freitag as a, ‘figure carved on slab in seated position. Big head without ears; pained expression on face, with mouth wide open, baring two rows of teeth. Two indentations for eyebrows and clearly marked nostrils. Big hands clasping tightly flexed knees. Lower legs held apart, revealing big oval pudenda with round hole in middle. Situated on NE facing slope of a steep hill in grassland, with good views to NE. Ringfort (WM012-075----) 40m to N, motte and bailey (WM012-079---) 160m to S, Taghmon church (WM012-076----) and castle (WM012-074----) 360m and 490m to W respectively. Depicted as a ringfort on the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map where it is shown standing alongside the avenue to the Glebe House. No depicted on subsequent editions of the OS 6-inch maps. The road which marks the boundary with the townland of Foxburrow lies 25m to N. All that remains of this much degraded monument is a slightly raised sub-circular shaped area (approx. diam. 29m NE-SW) enclosed by a fosse which is barely visible at NW and ENE. Traces of cultivation ridges are visible running NNW-SSE across the interior, which rises towards the centre. A section of the perimeter from N-ENE has been quarried away. Situated on the summit of a high undulating ridge in grassland, with excellent views in all directions. Taghmon Church (WM012-076---), graveyard (WM012-076001-) and castle (WM012-074-----) 315m and 480m to NW respectively. Ringforts (WM012-078----/ WM012-075----) 160m and 215m to N respectively, ringfort (WM012-077----) 130m to SW. Impressive remains of a circular flat-topped mound (top diam. 12m E-W; bottom diam. 20m E-W) of earth and stone the base of which is enclosed by a deep fosse. The top of the motte slopes slightly to the NW. A crescentic bailey (approx. diam. 36m NW-SE; 16m NE-SW) at NNE is enclosed by two earthen banks with an intervening fosse, which also curves to enclose the motte. The interior of the bailey slopes slightly to SSE. The outline and shape of the monument is clearly visible on aerial photographs taken 1970 (CUCAP BDV079/080). ## Architectural heritage (National Inventory of Architectural Heritage)

- Saint Munna's Church (Taghmon), church/chapel, 1450–1850, National interest, registry number 15401238, https://www.buildingsofireland.ie/niah/search.jsp?type=record&county=WM&regno=15401238. Freestanding fortified Church of Ireland church, built c.1450 and extensively altered c.1843. Now out of use and in State ownership. Comprises two-bay single-cell church with attached two-stage tower on square-plan to the west end with a battlemented parapet (Irish crenellations). Pitched natural slate roof hidden behind continuous battlemented parapet with Irish crenellations and cast-iron rainwater goods. Constructed of rubble limestone with a pronounced base batter. Clasping buttresses to east end of nave, c.1843. Two cusped ogee-headed window openings with cut-sandstone surrounds to north and south faces of nave with hoodmouldings over. Loop hole openings to south face of nave and to tower. Victorian window opening with limestone surround and tracery added to east (chancel) gable, c.1843. Carved sheela-na-gig figure above window opening to north face of nave. Pointed-arch doorcase with chamfered cut stone surround, a sheeted timber door with a carved medieval ecclesiastical figure over. Blocked pointed-arched doorcase to west end of south face of nave. Interesting interior with barrel-vaulted roof to nave, vaulted stone roofs to the tower, cut stone fireplaces, a cut stone piscina and a cut stone spiral staircase. Interior now cleared of internal fittings. Set back from road in extensive grounds with collection of grave markers, mostly nineteenth century in date. Gate-piers on round plan and wrought-iron gate to the north.
