No surface remains visible of levelled site. Monument described in 1977 as following; 'Not marked on current 6 inch [OS] map. A circular round topped mound of earth and stone. It is grass covered but where it is slightly defaced in places many stones are visible. These are about 20cms in diameter. There is no visible trace of a fosse. There is no visible trace of a kerb. Sited on the top of a prominent natural rise of gently undulating land of good pasture. Good views of surrounding countryside. The X marked by me on the current 6 inch [OS] map is the accurate site of the mound. Diameter from lower edge 9m. Height of mound 1.40m. Profile to be measured E-W’ (ASI Field Report 16/05/1977). A second report in 1981 described the monument as following; 'Situated on a prominent rise in gently undulating good pasture. Not marked on 6” sheet [OS map]. The site is a barrow of earth and stones partially denuded to reveal some of the stone particularly at the base perhaps where they may have formed a slight kerb. These stones measure 20-25cm in diameter and appear to be of local shale. The mound is round topped and grass covered, measuring 9m in diameter and rising to a height of 1.5m from the lower edge. Due to the undulating nature of the pasture and the erosion of the lower limits of the mound, it is difficult to say exactly where the edge of the barrow is especially on the North and East. There is no trace of an external fosse or bank [recorded as profiled but no measured profile in file]’ (ASI Field Report 21/08/1981). Monument surveyed in 2015 and described by McGuinness (2015, 53-4) as following: ‘Monument appears to have been destroyed: nothing was visible to the present survey-team where it was clearly located by the ASI, and the land has been recently ploughed. Fortunately there are two descriptions of the site by different ASI fieldworkers. The ‘slight kerb’ of the second account must be treated with suspicion in view of the definitive statement to the contrary in the first account. Given the absence of a ditch, the suggested classification of this monument as a bowl-barrow cannot be accepted; rather, it would appear to be a mound-barrow’. Situated in the grounds of Killagh House, 110m SE of Killagh Bridge, with Killagh Corn Mill and Tuck Mill 70m to N. Motte and bailey (WM020-024----) castle 130m to SE. Killagh church (WM020-025----) and graveyard (WM020-025001-) 150m to ESE. Rectangular tower (ext. dims. 8.8m N-S; 7.8m E-W) surviving three storeys high with projecting tower containing stairs in NW angle and projecting garderobe tower on SW angle. Ground floor entered through a broken out doorway in centre of S wall which gives access to a vaulted ground floor. The ground floor is lit by a slit ope in the centre of the N wall. The upper floors are accessed off a spiral stairs in NW angle. The first floor is lit by a narrow window in the W wall. A garderobe in the SW corner tower is accessed from this floor. The stairs now partially destroyed gave access to a second floor no longer accessible. A pigeon loft has been built into the outer face of the S wall, and an 18th century house has been built against the E wall of the castle. Derelict buildings of possible 18th century date abut the SE corner of the tower house. Killagh Castle is depicted on the Down Survey map of Killagh parish where it is annotated as 'in repaire' and shown standing beside Killagh Church and Mill (NLI MS 723-4). On this map the castle is depicted as standing on lands belonging to George Nugent who is listed in 1641 as an 'Irish papist'. It is possible that Corn Mill depicted on the 1838 ed. OS 6-inch map is built on the site of the mill depicted on the Down Survey map. The present 18th/19th century corn mill was described by the National Inventory of Architectural Heritage as following; 'Former corn mill complex, built c.1800, comprising detached multi-bay two-storey corn mill and store and a detached single-bay three-storey corn kiln at right angle to the northwest. Now out of use and in use as agricultural/domestic outbuildings. Pitched natural slate roof to main structure with pitched corrugated-iron roof to former corn kiln. Constructed of coursed rubble limestone with dressed limestone quoins to corners. Square-headed doorcases and segmental-headed carriage arches with dressed limestone and brick voussoirs to main building with loop hole openings over to first floor. Square-headed carriage arch (modern) to north side of former corn kiln. Small river/mill race to south side of main building (mill wheel no longer extant). This mill was owned by a John Heggarty, c.1850, and is recorded as a corn and tuck mill (woollen processing) with a water wheel ten feet in diameter and a water power value of £6 and 15 shillings (Valuation Office Mill Book)' (www.buildingsofireland.ie Reg. Church and graveyard (WM020-025----/-025001-) lie c. 60m to NE and Killagh tower house lies c. 135m to NW. Annotated 'Moat' on the 1837 OS Fair Plan map where it is depicted as an oval-shaped tree-planted earthwork. Depicted on the revised 1913 ed. OS 25-inch map as a roughly circular-shaped mound which is enclosed by a wide fosse from SE-S-W-NW. Monument described in 1970 as a roughly circular-shaped, high, steep-sided flat-topped earthen mound the base of which is enclosed by a fosse and the remains of an external bank. A wide, deep fosse and an outer bank are visible from SE-S-WSW. The bank has a modern gap at S and is very slight from SW-WSW. A modern bank running ESE-WNW is built against the outer face of the bank from SSE-S-SSW. The bank veers away from the fosse at SE to enclose a larger area, which may have been a bailey, although there is little evidence of such surviving. Monument is visible today as a tree-covered earthwork on Digital Globe aerial photography. See attached profile of monument surveyed and drawn by the ASI. Poorly preserved remains consist of a rectangular church (ext dims. 6.3m N-S; 19.6m E-W) aligned NW-SE which formed N boundary of a graveyard (WM020-025001-) as depicted on the 1838 ed. OS 6-inch map. The walls of the church are built of limestone rubble, with only a small part of the W end of the S wall and part of the E wall upstanding. A parcel is the land of a title, not an address. The owner's name is in the Land Registry of Tailte Éireann: a copy of the folio can be ordered on landdirect.ie, for a fee; this site names no owner. A price is the price recorded for a past sale, not a valuation.
