Situated on a slight rise, in gently undulating pasture, with good views in all directions. Depicted on the revised 1913 ed. OS 25-inch map as an oval-shaped earthwork. Monument described in 1970 as a roughly circular-shaped area (dims. 31.4m NE-SW; 28m NW-SE) enclosed by a bank and external fosse. The bank (Wth at top 1m; overall Wth 5m; int. H 0.4m; ext. H 1.5m) is best preserved from SE-S-W-N-NE and is almost reduced to a scarp elsewhere. A small portion of the scarp is quarried away at ESE and there are modern gaps at SW and W. A slight depression in the upper edge of the scarp at ENE may represent the entrance (Wth at top 6.6m; basal Wth 3.5m). A shallow U-shaped fosse is only visible from W-N-NNE. Monument is visible as a roughly oval-shaped earthwork on Digital Globe aerial photography. Compiled by Alison McQueen, Vera Rahilly and Caimin O’Brien. The Cross is indicated in gothic script on latest ed. OS 6-inch map. This cross has since been moved and is no longer located at this spot. It has been moved and placed with a group of wayside crosses between the villages of Killucan and Rathwire (WM020-0135001-). One of three wayside crosses (WM020-135/001/002-) of which only one (WM020-135) is in its original location prior to 1976. The cross was moved from the village to its current location. Described in 1976 as 'Darcy 1604 with Latin inscription, shaft grooved and now dislodged and broken. Squared base.' (ASI Survey files 1976). A second report from 1998 described this cross as 'A cross shaft consisting of two stones, inserted in a boulder, which may be the original base, but cannot be certain. The lower stone (H 0.58m ; 0.27m x 0.27m) is grooved along the edges vertically. The stone cement bonded to the top of the lower stone is square sectioned (H 0.43m; Wth 0.26m ; T 0.26m) . On the top of the surface of this stone is a coating of copper with fragment of slate embedded, and there is an iron pin (dims. 0.08m; H 0.02m) projecting upwards. No trace of the inscription described in 1976 can now be deciphered.' (ASI Survey file 1998). - WM020-129: Ringfort - rath, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CWM020-129----. Situated on a slight rise, in gently undulating pasture and tillage with good views to SE, S, and SW. A modern house plot abuts to SE. Depicted on the revised 1913 ed. OS 25-inch map as an oval-shaped earthwork (approx. dims 45m N-S; 40m E-W). Monument described in 1970 as a circular-shaped area enclosed by a bank, an intervening fosse and an outer bank. The bank is almost reduced to a scarp and has a slight gap at NNE. The intervening fosse is visible from SW-W-N-E and a modern bank crosses at SW. The outer bank is visible from SW-W-N-E and is best preserved from W-WNW and from NNW-N-E. It has been almost completely removed from WNW-NW-NNW and elsewhere it is reduced to a low scarp. It appears to have been modified in relatively recent times from SW-W and a modern bank runs NE-SW from it at SW. A gap (Wth at top 5.9m; basal Wth 4m) in the inner bank at SE presumably marks the entrance. The inner and outer bank have a modern gap at NNE. The interior has a gentle NW-facing slope and traces of cultivation ridges running NW-SE. A house site (WM020-129001-) is located within the NE quadrant. Monument is visible today as a tree-covered earthwork on Digital Globe aerial photography. Compiled by Alison McQueen, Vera Rahilly and Caimin O’Brien.
