Situated on a prominent hillock, in gently undulating pasture. Monument described as a roughly circular-shaped mound (30m N-S; 28.4m E-W) defined by an inner fosse and an earthen bank. The bank is substantial albeit slightly defaced at NE and S. A large gap in the bank at S may represent an entrance. This monument appears to have been reused as a ringfort, having a large enclosing bank and a later house site (WM026-045001-) in the centre. There is a relatively modern oblong-shaped quarry hole outside the earthwork at NE. See attached plan and profile of the monument surveyed and drawn by the ASI. Compiled by Alison McQueen, Vera Rahilly and Caimin O’Brien. Situated on a prominent hillock, in gently undulating pasture. In the centre of ring barrow (WM026-045----) is a small rectangular-shaped house (dims. 3.5m E-W; 3.2m N-S) site enclosed by a bank (Wth 1.8m; H 0.3m) with a gap (Wth 0.9m) in the E and W ends. Situated at the W end of a low ridge running E-W, in undulating rough pasture. Monument described in 1971 as a much disturbed subrectangular-shaped area (dims, 30m NW-SE; 25.6m NE-SW) enclosed by an inner bank, an intervening fosse and an outer bank. The inner bank is best preserved where it is steep along the NE and SE sides. It is reduced to a scarp along the NW side. There is no bank along the SW side, where the monument is cut by a relatively modern field bank and trench which flank a laneway running NW-SE. There is a wide outer fosse which is best preserved along the SE side and is much fainter along the NW and NE sides. Much of the outer bank has been removed along the NE side and there are slight remains along part of the SE side. A trench extends from the E corner of the fosse and from the centre of the fosse along the SE side. The original entrance is not recognisable. The interior has several humps and hollows and there is a slight, irregular fosse-like depression along the base of the bank at SE. A house site (WM026-046001-) is visible in the W quadrant, a possible souterrain (WM026-046002-) is visible in the NW quadrant and a possible field system is visible in the immediate vicinity of the monument. Situated at the W end of a low ridge running E-W, in undulating rough pasture. In the W quadrant of ringfort (WM026-046----) is a roughly rectangular-shaped house site (dims. 4m NW-SE; 2.8m NE-SW). It comprises of a low platform with a slight depression in the middle which is defined by a much defaced earthen bank (H 0.4m; overall Wth 2.6m) around its upper edge. Situated at the W end of a low ridge running E-W, in undulating rough pasture. In the NW sector of ringfort (WM026-046----) is a slight zigzag-shaped depression (overall L 17m; Wth 2.38m; D 0.4m) extending from the ringfort bank at NW to the N corner of house site (WM026-046001-) and may represent the remains of a collapsed souterrain. Situated in fairly level pasture, with limited views in all directions. Annotated ‘Fort’ on the 1837 OS Fair Plan map and depicted as a circular-shaped earthwork delimited by a broken line, in the SE corner of a field beside the roadway. Monument described in 1981 as no surface remains visible. There are two depressions in the ground. One is a broad, shallow depression and the other is a long, narrow depression which seem to be the result of minor quarrying. A laneway running N-S lies to the immediate E and a public road running WNW-ESE to the immediate S. A modern bungalow now stands on the site of the earthwork depicted on the 1840 ed. OS 6-inch map. Compiled by Alison McQueen, Vera Rahilly and Caimin O’Brien. Date of upload: 02 October 2019 - WM027-030: Crannog, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CWM027-030----. Originally located on the SSE shoreline of a small lake known as ‘Lough Atrim’ as depicted on the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map. A possible moated site (WM027-030001-) lies c. 20m to SE. The lake was drained about 1878, exposing this mound near the centre known as ‘The Island’. This crannóg was recorded by the antiquarian Rev. William Falkiner in 1898, after it had been partially damaged by excavation to produce top-soil to spread over the old lakebed. The site apparently had a 'low, circular mound, 22ft [6.7m]in diameter’, surrounded by, and studded over with black oak piles’. A ‘rough floor of beams’ was exposed at a depth of 4ft [1.2m]. It was possibly enclosed within a plank palisade or stockade of ‘rough hewn planks, standing close together. These planks were ‘9ft [2.7m] long, 10 inches [0.25m] wide and 3 inches [0.07m] thick’. A possible midden of ‘a great quantity of ashes, burnt wood and bones’ was found near the ‘outer portion of the stockade’. Lying on the ground was ‘a quantity of bones, amongst others, those of wild swine - red deer and oxen’ as well as ‘several boar’s jaws with large tusks still remaining. Also the horns of the ancient crumpled-horned ox.’ Artefacts found on the mound included 2 ‘horn’ combs, a comb fragment, 2 bone pins, a possible ‘tracked stone’, a hammer-stone, 2 bronze pins, 1 iron object (a possible ‘hold fast’), 1 amber ring fragment and 1 wooden ladle' (O'Sullivan 2004, 59-60; Falkiner 1898-1900, 216-8). Situated in relatively low lying wet and peaty pasture, at the SE edge of an expanse of bog, formerly known as Lough Atrim, prior to drainage. A possible crannog (WM027-030----) lies c. 20m to NW. Depicted on the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map as a roughly rectangular-shaped tree-planted area (dims. 30m NE-SW; 26.5m NW-SE), not depicted as an antiquity on any ed. OS 6-inch map. Monument is clearly visible on Digital Globe aerial photography as a rectangular-shaped earthwork. Compiled by Alison McQueen, Vera Rahilly and Caimin O’Brien.
