- WM020-116: Settlement deserted - medieval, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CWM020-116----. Earthworks located to N, E and S of castle (WM027-007001-) may be the remains of a deserted medieval settlement which has been partially destroyed by quarrying. Church (WM027-009001-) and graveyard (WM027-009002-) 260m to SE. Ringfort (WM027-066) located 55m to the S. Access road into quarry which is located to the N of the castle site can be seen on Bing Maps aerial photographs taken between 06-07 November 2011 (www.bing.com/maps). Earthworks of this levelled castle site were bulldozed in 1977 (SMR File). Site inspection carried out by the National Monuments Service in 1976 recorded that a small section of the SW angle (H c. 2m) of the castle remains upstanding. The remains of an extensive series of earthworks consisting of low earth and stone banks were noted extending out to the N, E and S of the castle. These earthworks may represent the remains of a deserted settlement of uncertain date. According to local information it was suggested that these earthworks represented the remains of the old village of Killucan (SMR File). Another local tradition recorded that these earthworks represented a clustered settlement where people lived until it was abandoned in the 19th century (SMR File). Annotated as Castle and depicted as an upstanding rectangular shaped building aligned on an E-W axis on the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map. Depicted as ‘Castle (Site of)’ on the revised 1910 ed. OS 25-inch map. Castle site situated on gravel ridge with church (WM027-009001-) and graveyard (WM027-009002-) 260m to the SE. Ringfort (WM027-066----) located 55m to the S. No surface remains visible of castle site in area marked on OS 6-inch map. Access road into quarry which is located to the N of the castle site can be seen on Bing Maps aerial photographs taken between 06-07 November 2011 (www.bing.com/maps). Earthworks of this levelled castle site were bulldozed in 1977 (SMR File). Situated on flat pasture with castle site (WM027-007001-) 55m to N, church (WM027-009001-) and graveyard (WM027-009002-) 210m to SE. On the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map the monument is hachured as a roughly oval-shaped enclosure intersected at N by the Mullingar-Killucan road running E-W. Present remains consist of a raised steep sided sub-circular platform (H c. 3.5m; diam. 25.5m E-W; 22.3m N-S) defined by a poorly preserved bank only visible at NW, elsehwere it has been reduced to a scarp with no evidence of an external fosse or clear entrance feature. A gap in platform at SE may be an original entrance feature but more likely the result of natural erosion. The raised platform may have been a natural hillock that was scarped to form the present raised mound of earth which has the appearance of a low motte or a raised ringfort. On top of low hillock with good views in all directions. Castle site (WM027-007001-) 255m to NW and ringfort (WM027-008----) 210m to WNW. Souterrain (WM027-009003-) c. 30m to SW. Modern quarry area located to SW-W and N of church. Depicted on 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map as ‘Site of Church’ with church building shown forming the N boundary of ‘Knockmant Burial Ground’(WM027-009002-) wall. Church building not depicted on revised 1910 ed. OS 25-inch map. Barely visible grass covered wall footings of levelled church can be seen in N quadrant of Knockmant graveyard (WM027-009002-). Church described in the late 19th century as an ‘old church measures forty-two feet (12.8m) by fourteen (4.25m). The walls have been torn down and the stones carried off. Only the root remains’ (Cogan 1867, vol. 2, 434). Church and graveyard located on top of hillock the base of which has been scarped forming an enclosing element which has the appearance of a possible ecclesiastical enclosure. A series of sub-dividing banks within this enclosure forming small square-shaped fields can be seen on B/W aerial photographs (CUCAP APE020/021/024). On top of low hillock with good views in all directions. Castle site (WM027-007001-) 255m to NW and ringfort (WM027-008----) 210m to WNW. Souterrain (WM027-009003-) c. 30m to SW. Modern quarry area located to SW-W and N of church. Depicted on 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map as ‘Knockmant Burial Ground’ with church (WM027-009001-) shown forming the N boundary of ‘small rectangular shaped graveyard the enclosing element of which is shown in dotted outline. The graveyard today consists of a rectangular area (dims. c. 29m N-S; 26m E-W) enclosed by a stone wall of post-1700 date. Memorials date from 18th and 19th centuries. Church and graveyard located on top of hillock the base of which has been scarped forming an enclosing element which has the appearance of a possible ecclesiastical enclosure. A series of sub-dividing banks within this enclosure forming small square-shaped fields can be seen on B/W aerial photographs (APE 20, 21, 24). A souterrain was discovered in 1976 c. 30m SW of a church site (WM027-009001-) and graveyard (WM027-009002-) during the course of quarrying operations. The souterrain was recorded by the Eamon Kelly of the National Museum of Ireland. Described by E. Kelly as consisting 'of a curved passage built of dry stone with a lintelled ceiling. At one end of this was a corbelled bee-hive chamber. The entrance was at the up-slope end of the passage. This was ovate and of dry-stone construction. There was a vertical drop into the passage 1m. deep. The structure had been constructed in a pre-dug trench which was then back-filled. A plain bronze strip was recovered from this back-filled material. A quantity of animal bones and charcoal was recovered from debris blocking the souterrain entrance' (www.excavations.ie).
