- WM017-046: Ringfort - rath, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CWM017-046----. Situated on steep W-facing slope of a prominent hill, in pasture and having extensive views to W. Visible as a roughly oval-shaped tree-planted ringfort on Digital Globe aerial photography. Depicted on the revised 1913 ed. OS 25-inch map as a roughly oval-shaped area (approx. dims. 29m N-S; 26.5m E-W) defined by a scarp. Monument described in 1975 and 1979 as an irregular oval-shaped area defined by an earth and stone bank best preserved from S-W-N-E with no trace of an external fosse. A well-defined gap at E could be the remains of an original entrance feature. The interior has a NW-facing slope. The enclosing bank has been removed from E-S and modified at SW. It has also been altered at S, where it is traversed by the remnants of an old field boundary running N-S which extends into the centre of the interior, where it returns to the enclosing bank at E. A bank located off-centre to W appears to extend under this later field fence. The enclosing bank has been modified at E and from SE-S, where another field fence extends outwards to SE. Milltown Castle was depicted as a tower house type structure on the 1657 Down Survey map of Rathconrath parish (NLI MS 723-4). The terrier of parish map stated there was a castle in the townland of Milltown which in 1641 was in the possession of Oliver Dalton who is listed as an Irish papist' (ibid.). Castle site situated directly N of a farmhouse and adjoining the NE end of a farmyard. A dovecote (WM017-058001-) lies c. 120m to SE. Location of castle is visible as a rectangular-shaped area (approx. dims. 34m NW-SE; 22m NE-SW) enclosed by a wall to NW, NE and SE and open to SW on Digital Globe aerial photography. Annotated on the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map as ‘Milltown Castle in ruins’. Annotated on the revised 1913 ed. OS 25-inch map as ‘Milltown Castle (Site of)’. Site of Milltown Castle described in 1978 as directly N of a cottage there are some low but fairly substantial grass-covered wall foundations which may be medieval in date and belong to the castle. Situated on the E side of a low ridge, in pasture, with good views to NNW and SE, restricted elsewhere by ridges. Depicted on the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map as a circular-shaped earthwork. Depicted on the revised 1913 ed. OS 25-inch map as a slightly modified oval-shaped bivallate earthwork which is bisected by a field boundary running NW-SE. Monument described in 1980 as a bivallate oval-shaped area (42m WNW-ESE; 38m N-S) enclosed by an inner bank, an intervening fosse and an outer bank. The inner earth and stone bank is best preserved from SE-S-W-NW and is less well preserved from NW-N-ENE. There are remains of an internal and external stone facing from N-NE-ENE. The stone facings are visible elsewhere around the perimeter but only in short stretches. The inner bank has a number of disturbance gaps at ESE, S, SSW, SW and WSW but none are recognisable as an original entrance gap. The fosse is wide and deep where it is visible from NW-N-ENE and from S-W-NNW. The outer earth and stone bank only survives from NW-N and at ENE, where it is very low and faint. The interior has a gentle E-facing slope and an uneven surface. The remains of a post-1700 field wall running NW-SE bisects the interior as shown on 25 inch OS map. Short stretches of earth and stone banks are visible within the interior: (1) Running in from the bank at NE towards & almost as far as the centre; (2) Running (approx. L 2m) out from the NE side of the field wall just N of centre; (3) Running (approx. L 2m) out from the SW side of the field wall S of centre and nearer the perimeter bank. Whilst (1) could be an original feature (2) and (3) are later features apparently connected with the post-1700 field wall. ridges. In the SW quadrant of there are a number of large stones visible on the surface, under which is evidence of animals burrowing. These stones could mark the position of a potential souterrain, although there is not enough evidence to classify this area of disturbance as a souterrain. Situated on SW facing slope of rising ground, in pasture, with limited views due to surrounding hills and ridges. Depicted on the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map as a circular-shaped earthwork, with a small rectangular shaped structure or house site (WM018-045001-) in centre truncated by a field boundary across the NE quadrant. Depicted on the revised 1913 ed. OS 25-inch map as a penannular-shaped earthwork truncated by a field boundary across the NE quadrant. Monument described in 1970 as a subcircular-shaped area (dims. 38m NW-SE; 31m NE-SW) enclosed by a bank which is reduced to a scarp in places. The bank is low from NW-N-E-SE, is best preserved from SE-S-W and is reduced to a scarp from W-NW. The bank is obscured by a modern earth and stone field boundary running NW-SE, from N-E. A gap (Wth at top 5m; basal Wth 3.5m) at SE may represent the entrance. There is no visible trace of a fosse. The interior has a gentle S-facing slope and traces of cultivation ridges running NW-SE. There is a very slight depression along the inner foot of the bank/scarp which is of unknown significance. Monument is visible as a tree-planted enclosure on Digital Globe aerial photography. Situated on SW facing slope of rising ground, with limited views. In centre of ringfort (WM018-045----) are the remains of a rectangular house site (dims. 7.8m NW-SE; 7.2m NE-SW) enclosed by an earth and stone bank (H 1m; Wth 2.8m). A slight gap (Wth at top 3.3m; basal Wth 1m) is visible in the SE side. There is a disturbance gap and a shallow depression in the N corner. There is a similar depression at the inner foot of the bank at W. A slight bank extends to ENE from the N corner of the house site, toward the modern field boundary. The interior of the house is slightly lower across the NE half than the SW half. See attached sketch plan of monument surveyed and drawn by the ASI. Situated on a natural terrace, on the NW facing slope of hillock. Ringforts (WM018-049----, WM018-048---- and WM018-047----) lie c. 80m to E, c. 150m to SE and c. 130m to SW, respectively. Depicted on the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map as an oval-shaped enclosure intersected at SW by townland boundary, with limekiln incorporated into bank at N. Depicted on the revised 1913 ed. OS 25-inch map as a penannular-shaped earthwork truncated at SW quadrant by a trackway and townland boundary. A circular-shaped earthwork is depicted on an estate map of Rathconrath dating from 1776 (NLI, MS 21 F. 48 (026) ). Monument described in 1970 as a small sub-rectangular shaped area (approx. dims. 32m NW-SE; c. 28m NE-SW) enclosed by a bank which is reduced to a scarp in places. The bank is best preserved from W-NW, is reduced to a scarp from N-NE and is well preserved from NE-E-ESE. The bank has been modified from S-SW-WSW to form part of a modern stone-faced field boundary running NW-SE. There are three large stones standing on the inner edge of the bank at SE. There is a modern stone-facing at the foot of the scarp/bank from N-E-ESE and there is a modern stone wall outside the scarp from W-N. There is a gap (Wth at top 5.9m; basal Wth 1.9m) in the bank at S and a second gap (Wth at top 4m; basal Wth 2.2m) at WSW. The E side of the S gap has a small portion of modern wall. The original entrance is not recognisable. The interior has a general NE-facing slope and has traces of cultivation ridges NW-SE. A townland is the smallest land division of Ireland, and the unit of a rural address; old registers such as the 1901 and 1911 censuses file it under its civil parish and barony.
