Situated on a low ridge to the immediate W of the Moate Road, directly S of Main Street in the town of Moate. Depicted on the revised 1910 ed. OS 25-inch map as a substantial oval-shaped flat-topped mound. Monument described as a large steep-sided circular-shaped mound defined by regular sides. The top (dims. 19m N-S; 15m E-W) is slightly rounded and has an irregular surface. A fosse defines the base of the motte from S-SSW-SW and separates it from a high, triangular-shaped platform which represents the remains of a bailey. There is no indication of an entrance feature or of access to the motte from the bailey. The E side of the bailey has been disturbed by quarrying. Bullaun stone described in 1983 as located outside the W wall of the Quaker burial ground (WM030-113----), just on the W side of the townland boundary between Cartronkeel and Aghanargit. A large bullaun stone (approx. T 0.3m) with two depressions is sitting on a pile of collapsed rubble. An oval-shaped depression (dims. L 0.5m; Wth 0.35m; D 0.3m) is visible on the centre of the stone. The second depression (dims. L 0.35m; Wth 0.25m; D 0.2m) is on the N edge of the surface, having been cut in from the edge. Modern signage to roof on the main façade (east). Ruled-and-line rendered walls over smooth rendered plinth. Square-headed window openings with two-over-two pane timber sliding sash windows to the first floor openings and replacement timber casement windows to ground floor openings. Round-headed doorway with moulded architraved surround having a fluted scrolled keystone over, a timber panelled door and with a plain fanlight. Rendered pub front to the south corner of the main façade and to the south elevation, comprising square-headed openings and with fluted pilasters having consoles brackets supporting plain fascia with a moulded cornice over. Square-headed doorcase to the centre of the front façade (north) having decorative surround with raised pilasters, moulded hoodmoulding over with decorative label stops and with decorative rendered panels with inscriptions ‘Church Street’ and ‘1906’. Pitched natural slate roof with a raised stone verge to the west gable end and with a projecting corbelled eaves course. Curved roof to the east end over chancel. Constructed with rubble limestone with roughcast rendered finish over to the south side of nave. Roughcast rendered finish to tower. Pointed-arched window openings to the nave openings and to the end elevations of transepts having timber sliding sash windows with intersecting tracery to heads. Pointed-arched window to the chancel gable having Y-tracery and stained glass windows. Pointed-arched windows to the east faces of transepts with triple-light stained glass windows. Pointed-arched doorcase to the north face of tower, set within a raised square-headed cut stone surround/panel, having timber double doors. Pointed-arched openings over doorway to the belfry having timber louvers. Interesting interior to church with decorative tiled floor, moulded ceiling cornice, timber panelled choir/balcony to the west end, decorative carved timber pulpit and a number of memorial monuments. Set back from road to the west end of Moate, surrounded by a graveyard on rectangular plan. Rubble limestone wall with wrought-iron railings over to road frontage (north). Terraced four-bay two-storey house, built c 1830, having an integral segmental-headed carriage arch to the east end. Pitched natural slate roof with three rendered chimneystacks. Square-headed window openings with cut stone sills, one-over-one pane timber sliding sash windows and having projecting keystone detailing over. Square-headed doorcase, offset towards the west end of the front façade (north) having cut stone surround with keystone detailing over and having a panelled timber door with plain glass overlight. Detached three-bay two-storey parochial house built, c.1867, having an advanced gable-fronted bay to the north end of the main façade (east), a gable-fronted bay to the south end of the main façade and a central gable-fronted single-bay entrance porch. Two-storey return to the rear (west). Pitched slate roofs having two rendered chimneystacks, aligned parallel to roof ridge, and a gablet to the centre, above porch. Roughcast rendered walls over a chamfered cut stone plinth with rasied quoins to the corners. Exposed sandstone construction to projecting porch. Square-headed window openings to the ground floor with three-over-three pane timber sash windows with decorative heads. Hoodmouldings over ground floor window openings. Tudor-arched window openings over to the first floor with three-over-three pane timber sliding sash windows. Cut stone sills throughout. Tudor-arched doorcase to porch with flush cut stone dressings and a timber panelled door. Flight of two curved stone steps to the front (east). Set back from road in shared mature grounds with associated Roman Catholic church to the east (15317024). Freestanding Roman Catholic church on cruciform plan, built c.1867, comprising a three-bay nave to the north, single-bay transepts to the east and the west, a shallow chancel to the south and a two-stage tower on square-plan having a broached spire over (with lucarnes and with a wrought-iron cross finial over), attached to the west side of the nave/entrance gable (north). Single-bay gable-fronted entrance porch to the north side of the west elevation of nave and various gable-fronted side chapels, a sacristy and entrance porches attached to the south side of the transepts. Pitched natural slate roofs with raised cut stone verges to gable ends having cut stone cross finials to apexes, clay ridge tiles and projecting eaves courses. Constructed of buff-coloured squared rubble stone with extensive ashlar limestone trim, including clasping and corner buttresses, dressings to the openings and flush quoins to the corners. Spire constructed of ashlar limestone. Rendered finish to chancel gable and to the south faces of transepts. Pointed-arched window openings to nave, pointed-arched windows with paired lights and Geometric tracery to end elevations of transepts (west and east), pointed-arched window opening to entrance gable/nave (north) having a triple-light Geometric window, quatrefoil windows to the north faces of transepts and a four-light window with Geometric tracery to the chancel gable. Pointed-arched doorcases with flush ashlar limestone surrounds and timber doors and double doors. Interesting interior with Victorian pictorial stained glass windows and with ashlar columns on octagonal-plan supporting pointed-arched openings to transepts from main body of church. Set back from road in extensive mature shared grounds, along with associated parochial house (15317023), to the southeast corner of Church Street. Wrought-iron gates and railings and cast-iron gate posts having cross finial over to the southwest side of site. Ashlar limestone plinth wall with cast-iron railings over and moulded ashlar limestone gate piers supporting cast-iron gates to the street-frontage (north). - Gates/railings/walls, 1830–1860, Regional interest, registry number 15317027, https://www.buildingsofireland.ie/niah/search.jsp?type=record&county=WM®no=15317027. Gateway, erected c.1845, comprising a pair of dressed limestone gate piers on square-plan with cut stone capstones over. Smooth rendered finish to the ground floor with dry-dash finish over to the first floor, separated by a rendered string course. Simple rendered bands to gables (creating pediments) and raised rendered quoins to the corners. Square-headed window openings having timber sliding sash windows with margin glazing to the building to the north and replacement windows to the building to the south (retaining original glazing pattern). Square headed door openings with timber panelled doors having glazed overlights and surrounds. Projecting flat-roofed canopy over each doorway having a balustraded parapet over. Set back from road in own grounds to the north of the centre of Moate. Shopfront to the ground floor comprising a central square-headed doorway flanked to either side by square-headed fixed pane windows, plain rendered stallrisers and with fluted stone pilasters having fluted consoles supporting plain fascia board with moulded cornice over. Traditional raised lettering to fascia. Pitched natural slate roof, partially hidden behind raised ashlar limestone parapet/blocking course, and having three rendered chimneystacks. channelled ashlar limestone construction to ground floor. Rendered finish to first a second floors with projecting cut stone sill course at first and second floor level. Square-headed window openings to first and second floors with cut stone sills and replacement windows. Windows to advanced bays are set in segmental-headed recesses. Round-headed openings to central three bays at ground floor level having cut stone sills, moulded string courses at arch springing level and fixed pane windows Square-headed doorcases to advanced bays to either end, having cut stone architraved surrounds with cut stone console brackets supporting cut stone canopies/entablatures over. Timber panelled double-doors with plain overlights above. Cut stone steps to the front of doorways. Roughcast rendered walls over smooth rendered plinth courses. Segmental-headed window openings with cut stone sills and mainly two-over-two pane timber sliding sash windows.
