- WM024-006: Ringfort - rath, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CWM024-006----. This site was surveyed and recorded in 1971 when it recorded 'A large broad oval slightly uneven enclosure (diam. 43m N-S; 44m E-W), rising slightly from the perimeter towards the centre, bounded by a steep scarp with remains of an earthen bank and its upper edge and with remains of a wide deep fosse at its foot. The bank has several modern gaps. It is steep in places on the inside and it may have been modified in relatively modern times. There are modern field fences on the upper outer edge of the fosse and against the counterscarp so that the fosse has been partly modified. The entrance is represented on the E by a gap (Wth 5m) and causeway. The interior is under meadow at present. Sited on a small summit just E of the highest part of a hill of average to good pasture. Extensive views in all directions. The bank and scarp are defaced on the SSE and WSW' (ASI 1971, ASI File). Nearby ringfort (WM024-007) located 300m to the SW, holy well (WM024-008001-) and mass rock (WM024-008002-) 350m to the W. Possible 17th century tower or fortification (WM024-008003-) located on hilltop 240m to the W. Site was re-visited and surveyed in 1977. Compiled by: Caimin O'Brien Date of upload: 11 November 2009

This site was surveyed and recorded in 1971 when it recorded 'A roughly circular uneven enclosure (int. diam. 29.5m N-S; 26.4m E-W) bounded by a steep sided scarp with remains of an earthen bank on its upper edge and with slight remains of a fosse at its foot. The banki is denuded down almost to the interior from the SW-W-WNW and from the N-E. The bank has a slight modern gap on the SW and another on the N. From N-E-SE field fences have been built just outside the foot of the scarp and the fosse is obscured there. Elsewhere the fosse is narrow and shallow. The entrance is represented by a gap (Wth 7.4m) and causeway on the SSE. A few stones are visible in the bank and scarp but they do not appear to be formally set. Very small bits of rock outcrop are visible in the interior which dips slightly to the perimeter on the W and E sides. Sited on a small summit near the highest part of a hill of average to good pasture. Excellent views to the SW, W and N. Some thorn bushes grow in the scarp and interior' (ASI 1971, ASI File). Nearby ringfort (WM024-006-) located 300m to the NE, holy well (WM024-008001-) and mass rock (WM024-008002-) 175m to the NW. This monument was described by J. Mc Cabe in 1971 as 'it consists of roughly mortared uncoursed masonry with a dressed stone flag and concrete forming a flat top. Rising almost vertically from the back of the altar is some rough mortared masonry forming a facing to the scarp which was made when digging into the side of the rise when erecting the altar. Embedded in the masonry is a broken fragment of a dressed flag with part of an illegible inscription. The site is enclosed by a wire fence with a wooden gate in front of the altar. An iron cross stands in the top of the masonry at the back of the altar' (ASI file 1971). The site was revisited in 1984 and described as 'The altar has deteriorated since visited in 1971. The cross is gone; the gate is broken and in general the site is overgrown and neglected. The inscribed slab is of limestone 52cm x 42 cm and according to local informants it commemorates a priest, Fr. Dalton, killed in penal times. The site was also apparently a mass rock. The inscription is on the long axis of the slab and less that half of it survives. It reads 'MERED …AI DALTON SACED?..29 AUG…ANNO D..'. All that can be clearly read are the words DALTON, 29 AUG, ANNO. ['ME FIERI FECIT JOANNES DALTON, SACERDOS 29 AUG. ANNO DOMINI 1689] The location on the side of a hill which commands excellent views in all driections would have been suitable for a mass rock. There is a well, called Sunday Well (WM024-008002-) on the OS 6-inch map to the NE of the altar about 5 meters distant.

Described 'There is a well, called 'Sunday Well on the OS 6-inch map to the NE of the altar (WM024-008001-) about 5 meters distant. It comprises a structure built of large stones, roughly mortared and forming a covering over a font, about 11cm in diam., circular and filled with water. The font is about 12cm in depth. A number of whitethorn trees and bushes grow in the vicinity of the well and altar. There is a pilgrimage to the well with mass on the 15th of August. The water from the well is said to contain a cure for bad veins. There are no signs of veneration in the form of relics around the site at present. In June 1691 'one sergeant and 15 men who occupied a small tower on a low hill, 400m to the east of the lough. After the position had been stormed by Williamite infantry, he was hanged in sight of the garrison on what became known as 'Sergeant's Hill' (Childs 2007, 314). This small tower on the low hill was located 400m east of the Anglo-Norman motte (WM024-004-) and of the 17th century bastioned fort (WM024-004001-). This tower sitting on top of a low hill is depicted as 'The Irish Serjeants hill' on George Story's 1691 sketch map of Ballymore (Story 1693, 318, plate 16). Testing and monitoring by Kieran Campbell of foundations for a house at Low Street, within the 'Archaeological Zone' of the medieval borough (WM024-179----) of Ballymore Lough Sewdy took place on September 5th, 1994 under archaeological excavation licence number 94E092. A pit, exposed in the trench on the east side of the house, was 2.1m in diameter and at least 0.4m deep under 0.3m of topsoil. The depth of the pit was not established as it lay below the required level of the trenches. The pit edge was oxidised to a brick-red colour and had a lining of white lime 20-30mm thick. The fill of the pit consisted of burnt limestone mixed with soil. A sherd of black-glazed earthenware of 18th-19th-century date was recovered from the fill. The pit had obviously functioned as a small lime kiln. The outline when fully exposed by hand excavation was found to be circular with no sign of a rake-out or flues. Historical documentation suggests that the nunnery at Lough Sewdy was located on the same site as the Priory (WM024-034---) of St. Mary's Lough Sewdy. In 1306 the ecclesiastical taxation of Ireland valued the ‘Temporalities of the nuns de Lox’ [Loughsewdy, co. Westmeath] as worth ½ a mark a year (Cal. doc. Ire., 258, 266). In 1417 there is a reference to Margaret, the prioress, and the convent of the Cistercian monastery of Loughseudy [alias Ballymore Lough-Seudy] (Costello 1909, 86). A note in the annates states that ‘it appears from the above annat entry that the nunnery of Lochseudy being abandoned by the nuns had been turned into a priory of Regular Austin canons – why the nuns left, or precisely when they did so, I have note so far been able to make out – a bull in the Vatican archives dating from 1417 states that ‘Margaret, prioress of S. Mary’s Loughseudy, of the Cistercian order, and the convent of that house had some time before, using their right of presentation to the rectory of St. Patrick, Magmora [Mayvore]’ (Costello 1909, 101). In 1427 there is a reference to Johanna, prioress of S. Mary’s Lough Sewdy , of the Cistercian Order, to whom by ancient and approved usage the right of presentation to Killfyelan belonged’ (Costello 1909, 179). In 1453 there is a reference to 'the prioress and convent of the Cistercian nuns' priory de lochsydii (i.e. Lochsydy) in the diocese of Meath' (Cal. papal letters, 670). The Urban Survey of Westmeath (Bradley et. al. 1985, 69) recorded that 'according to Ware this convent was established in 1218 by a member of the de Lacy family. Little is known of its subsequent history apart from the names of some of the prioresses. It appears to have fallen into decline in thef fifteenth century and it has been suggested that it was abandoned c.1470 (Gwynn and Hadcock 1970, 313). The site is not known for certain but it may be identified with the monastery marked on the O.S. maps at the southern end of Mullaghcloe townland where it borders on Clonnamanagh. Here there is a two storey farmhouse with thick walls which may incorporate parts of an earlier building. Two piscinas are built into the house, one in the entrance hall which is decorated with a trefoil in false relief; the other is in the bathroom and is not exposed to view. The owners informed us that the convent was located in the adjoining townland of Clonbane (pronounced Cloony mon.)'. In 1682 Sir Henry Piers described the nunnery at Ballymore as ‘adjoining to this town is the old dissolved monastery of Plary; (WM024-032----) here was formerly both a friary and nunnery, but in separated buildings, both of the Cistercian order; the land hereunto belonging are said to belong to the bishop of Meath, yet are witholden from the see, either by the adventurer, or the Lord Netterville' (Vallancey 1786, 79-80). A hospital was located at the E end of Ballymore village (WM024-179----), although the precise location has not been identified. The Urban Survey of Westmeath recorded that 'Story's map of 1693 shows a plain quadrangular building marked 'the hospital', situated on the south-east side of the village (Murtagh 1974-5, Pl. 16). There is no further evidence, documentary or otherwise, for this hospital and no sign of it now survives' (Bradley et. al. 1985, 70; Story 1693, 88). This hospital was located on the S side of the Dublin-Athlone Road close to the cross-roads at the E end of the present village of Ballymore. The precise location of this building has not been identified. The location of this 'Hospital' has been recorded in 2009 as 'The 'hospital' as marked on the contemporary mapping to the east of the village is no longer visible, though its general location can be suggested. Today a row of houses have been built along the road at this point, although it is unclear what damage these may have caused to any underlying archaeology' (Report on the Battlefield of Ballymore Co. Westmeath 2009, 9, 10). Concrete horizontal supports stretch width of channel to south side of stream. Located to the centre of Ballymore village.

Freestanding cast-iron water pump, erected c.1880, comprising banded cylindrical shaft with fluted head having fluted spout and a ‘cow tail’ curvilinear handle. Original cap now missing. Located on path to the north side of a single-arched bridge (15315016) to the centre of Ballymore village. Rubble limestone wall to the north having a square-headed recess adjacent to the pump.

Detached six-bay two-storey house, built c.1820. Formerly in use as a post office. Pitched artificial slate roof having rendered chimneystacks (one to either gable end and one to the centre) and cast-iron rainwater goods. Roughcast rendered walls over smooth rendered plinth. Square-headed window openings with cut stone sills and having mainly timber sliding sash windows. Fixed pane window to the second bay from the west having iron security bars. Two square-headed door openings having modern timber sheeted doors. Modern metal gate gives access to rear site (south). Single-storey rendered outbuilding to the southeast of building having a corrugated metal roof over. Located to the east end of Ballymore village, adjacent to bridge (15315015).

Attached four-bay two-storey house, built c.1825, having a single-bay gable-fronted entrance porch to the front façade (south) and having single-storey outbuildings to either end (east and west). Pitched artificial slate roof with three rendered chimneystacks, one to either gable end and one to the centre. Smooth rendered finish to the ground floor with roughcast rendered finish over to the first floor, separated by a smooth rendered string course. Smooth rendered bands to the corners. Square-headed window openings with cut stone sills and replacement windows. Round-headed doorcase to front face of projecting porch (south) with recessed replacement timber sheeted door. Roughcast rendered outbuildings to either gable end with pitched corrugated metal roofs and square-headed openings with timber sheeted doors. Wrought-iron gate to the east side of house gives access to the rear. Road-fronted to the east side of Ballymore.

Former mass rock/altar built into the side of a hill, erected c.1689. Constructed using rubble limestone with a cut stone flagstone/slab to the top. Site now heavily overgrown. Slab reads ‘ME FIERI FECIT JOANNES DALTON, SACERDOS 29 AUG. ANNO DOMINI 1689’ (Archaeological Survey, site WM024-008001-). Site now overgrown and inscription no longer legible. Located adjacent to a holy well (WM024-008002-) to the west slop of a hill to the northeast of Ballymore.
