Situated on a slight natural rise surrounded by gently undulating grassland. The townland boundary with Paddinstown Upper runs along the boundary of the site at W & S. Annotated as ‘Site of Castle’ on the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map. No surface remains visible of levelled castle at location marked on 1911 ed.OS map. The location of the 'Site of Castle' marked on the revised 1911 map differs from the location marked on the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map (approx. ITM Co-ords 627723/757314). On the latter map the castle site is indicated with a dotted circle located W of a circular curving field boundary. This would place the castle site approx. 50m E of its current location on the 1911 6-inch OS map. However, to the W of the roadway and the site of the castle there is a low rectangular earthwork (approx. dims. 10m x 7m) with some possible earthworks to the N of it which may mark the site of the castle. This earthwork is located at ITM Co-ords 627601/757302. Situated on a slight natural rise surrounded by gently undulating grassland with wide views of the surrounding countryside. Ringfort (WM010-027----) 190m to NNE, and site of levelled castle (WM010-030----) 180m to SSE. Depicted as a semi-circular shaped enclosure intersected at E by a roadway running N-S. This roadway forms the townland boundary with Paddinstown Lower. A small sub-circular shaped area (approx. diam. 27m N-S; 30m E-W) enclosed by a poorly preserved bank of earth and stone and very slight external fosse. The bank forms part of a field boundary from SW-N and has been steepened and faced with stone externally. Traces of cultivation ridges are visible running NNW-SSE across the interior. There is a vague circular depression (Wth 2.6m) at the centre of the monument which may be the remains of a potato pit. The enclosing element of the site appears to have been levelled from SE-S-SW as visible on Digital Globe aerial photograph taken November 2011. See attached profile of monument surveyed and drawn by the ASI. Situated on a low natural rise in low lying wet grassland, with good views all around. The road which forms the townland boundary with Jordanstown lies 70m to W, and the field fence which forms the townland boundary with Lisnacask lies 75m to E. A large sub-circular shaped area (approx. diam. 26m NNE-SSW) enclosed by two earth and stone banks and an intervening wide deep fosse. The inner bank is quite substantial from SW-N-NE with remains of an inner stone facing at SW, W and N. The outer bank is low and poorly preserved. There is a stone lined entrance gap (Wth 2.4) and a causeway (Wth 3.4m; H 0.75m) with stone revetted sides at NE. The interior rises irregularly towards the centre. A parcel is the land of a title, not an address. The owner's name is in the Land Registry of Tailte Éireann: a copy of the folio can be ordered on landdirect.ie, for a fee; this site names no owner.
