- WM025-138: Castle - unclassified, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CWM025-138----. Situated on S-facing slope, in pasture, with good views to E, S and W. Rathdrishoge Castle depicted on the 1838 ed. OS 6-inch map as a small square structure with field boundary intersecting the E side of the castle. However on the revised 1913 ed. OS 25-inch map the castle is shown as a long rectangular structure, with its long axis aligned ENE-WSW. Castle appears in S quadrant of a large D-shaped enclosure (WM025-138001-). Upstanding remains described in 1971 as the remains of a long rectangular-shaped building (approx. L 36m; Wth 6m) defined by grass-covered wall footings and two short upstanding sections of the SE and SW wall. A portion of the SE wall (L 6m; H 5m) and the centre of the SW wall (L 9m; H 5m) are constructed of rubble stone. The quoin stones visible in the S corner are roughly hewn, and there is no dressed stone visible. Two main subdividing walls which survive as low grass-covered wall footings are noted within the interior. A range of buildings defined by a pair of parallel banks (approx. L 35m; Wth approx. 6-7m) extend at a right angle from the SE end of the NE wall. Monument placed on the Register of Historic Monuments 18/12/1987. Situated on S-facing slope, in pasture, with good views to E, S and W. Rathdrishoge Castle (WM025-138-----) stands along SW side of large semi-circular shaped enclosure Bivallate enclosure possibly the remains of an castle bawn described in 1978 as the remains of a large roughly semi-circular-shaped area (approx. dims. 60m NE-SW; 45m NW-SE) defined by an inner bank, an intervening fosse and an outer bank. The inner bank is substantial and both it and the outer bank comprise of earth and stone. The perimeter of the earthwork is best preserved along the straight side to SW and from NW-NE. It is quite denuded from NE-E-SE where it is visible as a low, wide grassy bank. This may suggest a possible entrance at this location. Compiled by Alison McQueen, Vera Rahilly and Caimin O’Brien. Situated on a low rise, in low lying gently undulating wet pasture, with extensive views to SE and SSW. Monument described as a roughly oval-shaped area enclosed by a steep inner earthen bank, an intervening fosse and an outer bank. The inner bank is almost reduced to a scarp (H 1.6m) which has a slight concavity from N-NE, possibly due to part of it having been removed. A small portion of the scarp has been dug away at W. Several later field banks intersect the base of the scarp and it is slightly defaced at SSE for this reason. The intervening fosse is shallow and there are traces of a low outer bank. No entrance feature visible. The interior has a general WNW-facing slope, is fairly even with a slight rise toward the centre. Monument placed on the Register of Historic Monuments 18/12/1987.
