Monument visible as a roughly circular shaped area (approx. diam. 37m N-S; 40m E-W) enclosed by an earthen bank which forms a field boundary from S-N-NE, low semi-circular shaped annexe defined by a scarp and slight fosse at SE visible on Digital Globe aerial photograph taken November 2011. Compiled by: Caimin O'Brien Date of upload: 7 February 2018 - WM012-093: Barrow - mound barrow, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CWM012-093----. A low rise of ground indicates site of levelled bowl barrow. Situated on top of high ground with good views of surrounding countryside from E-S-W. Earthwork depicted on Larkin's 1808 map of County Westmeath (NLI, MS 46,580). Monument visited by ASI in 1980 and described as 'small disturbed bowl barrow' which consisted of 'a low circular mound of earth and stones, now much disturbed. The mound is approx. 9m in diam. and now stands 1.25m high. A number of small stones lie on the disturbed surface of the mound' (SMR File, 23/10/1980). In 2012 the monument was surveyed, re-classified as a mound-barrow and described as following: ‘Roughly circular and apparently flat-topped mound on low eminence with excellent views in all directions except to N, where higher ground rises a few fields away; ground drops away sharply to W and SW, but only slightly to N, E and SE. Site is in a small, disused triangular patch of land at WNW edge of large field that has been heavily ploughed in recent years to within c. 2m of mound. This patch of land, overgrown with gorse and brambles close to the mound, is matted with long, thick, ungrazed grass, and part of the mound is covered by a pile of disused fencing and other rubbish, so that its edges and upper surface cannot be clearly seen or felt. As such, its diameter and height can only be crudely estimated as 9m N‐S x 8.5m E-W and up to 1.1m respectively, and, although there appears to be no ditch surrounding it, faint traces of one might not be currently discernible. Frewin Hill (WM011-133----) is clearly visible across Lough Owel to SW and Knockdrin (WM012-183----) to SE’ (McGuinness 2012, 33). Situated on NE facing slope of hill, surrounded by undulating grassland. A large circular shaped area (approx. diam. 33m N-S; 30m E-W) enclosed by two earthen banks and an intervening fosse and a slight outer fosse. The inner bank is poorly preserved, and reduced to a scarp from NE-SSE. The inner fosse is wide and shallow and is best preserved from ESE-WSW, and appears to have been steepened in places. The outer bank is also best preserved from ESE-WSW. There is an entrance gap (Wth 0.9m) in the inner bank and causeway across the inner fosse (Wth 3.5m; H 0.4m) at E. The interior slopes gently from S-W-NE. See attached profile of monument surveyed and drawn by the ASI. Situated on a slight rise on the NW face of a hill in grassland, surrounded by gently undulating countryside. Ringfort (WM012-035---)140m to NW, ringfort (WM012-096---) 140m to SE. The field fence which forms the townland boundary with Loughanstown lies 40m to E. Poorly preserved site reduced to a circular raised area defined by a scarp (approx. diam. 34m NW-SE; 32m NE-SW) enclosed by a shallow fosse and low outer bank. The fosse and bank is only visible from SE-S. A depression (Wth 3.2m) in the scarp at NE may represent the entrance. Traces of cultivation ridges are visible running ENE-WSW across the interior.
