Situated on gentle SE-facing slope, in undulating pasture, with restricted views. Monument described as a roughly circular-shaped area (diam. 31.5m) enclosed by a bank best preserved from W-N-NNE and from ESE-SE with several small disturbance gaps. There is no visible trace of an external fosse. A very wide gap (Wth at top 8.4m; Wth at base 4.7m) at SSE may represent the entrance. The interior has a SSE-facing slope and there are traces of cultivation ridges running NNW-SSE. A field report from 1971 noted a low earthen bank extending from the centre of the monument to the enclosing bank at WNW. There is a large quarried depression just outside the bank from ESE-SE. Cahill and Sikora (2011, 54752) record that ‘in late April 1969 a short cist containing an inhumation and a bowl was found during ploughing on a farm near Killucan, Co. Westmeath. The discovery was made when the plough struck the capstone at a depth of 0.2m and broke it into three pieces. When a piece of the stone was removed, the cist and its contents were revealed. In attempting to remove the vessel, the skeleton was disturbed and the vessel shattered. The site was reported to the NMI by Mrs Ruth Vandeleur of Wardenstown, Co. Meath, and a rescue investigation was undertaken by John Waddell. This report is based on Waddell's account of the site. The human remains were examined by Laureen Buckley. The cist was in the townland of Riverstown, south-east Co. Westmeath, just 5km west of the Meath border. The site was a gently rounded gravel hillock approximately 90m above sea level. In 1963 a short cist containing a bowl and a cremation was excavated in the neighbouring townland of Mill Land (Rynne 1964,114), and another early Bronze Age cist is known from Balrowan townland, approximately 1km north-west of that at Riverstown. Further north, at Huntingdon, a cist containing a crouched skeleton was discovered (Waddell 1990,150). While investigating the cist burial, the landowner informed Waddell that a farmer in the neighbouring farm, also in Riverstown townland, had ploughed up some human remains the previous year. No further information was available. The short cist was rectangular in plan, with its long axis aligned east/west. It measured 1.2m long by 0.6m wide by 0.61m deep internally. The northern and southern walls were each formed of a single edge-set slab, while that at the east was formed of two slabs placed parallel to each other. The innermost slab was somewhat irregular in form; its straight edge was placed uppermost and it effectively sealed the upper half of the eastern end of the cist. The consequent gap at the base of the eastern end was filled with small rounded boulders. The western end of the cist was formed of a single rounded boulder onto which a single course of rounded stones had been placed. The cist was sealed by a rectangular capstone, which, when complete, measured 1.6m long by 1.2m wide by 0.27m thick. The floor of the cist was paved with small flat slabs, averaging 0.2m long by 0.15m wide by 0.06m thick. The cist contained a crouched inhumation of an older adult male (1969:672) tripartite bowl. The body lay on its right side with the head in the eastern end, facing north. The bones of the skeleton, a male aged over 50 at death, had only been slightly disturber discovery, and the skull and long bones lay more or less in their presumed original position. The smaller bones, notably of the hands and feet, and apparently some of the vertebrae disintegrated. The left hand of the skeleton was flexed at right angles to the upper arm and lay across the abdomen, and the end of the ulna and the radius almost touched the sherds vessel. The bowl had originally stood mouth upwards between the chest of the body an northern side wall. A sample of collagen produced a date of 3645±30 BP,348 which calibrates to 2134-1926 BC at 95.4% probability. Brindley (2007, 245) places this vessel in stage 2 of the development of bowl tradition pottery, which is dated to 2080-1980 BC'. Date of upload: 13 August 2012

Monument surveyed in 2015 and described by McGuinness (2015, 69-70) as following: ‘Large, heavily eroded ring-barrow (Diam. 33.2 N-S x 32.8m E-W) in very low relief, comprising a low roughly circular domed mound (Diam. 20m N-S x 18.7m -EW) surrounded by a shallow, poorly defined ditch and what appear to be the remains of an external bank which is now broad, almost flattened and very difficult to discern. Although neither ASI fieldworker who saw the site in the 1970s refer to a bank—the 17/5/71 account, headed ‘Platform barrow?’, describes the site as ‘A small circular or sub-circular low, smooth sided platform surrounded by a wide shallow fosse’ [SMR file]—an outer bank is nonetheless clearly depicted on the 1838 OS 6” map. Where ditch is deepest and best preserved at SE, it is sunk 0.74m below mound and 0.11m below bank. When the site was visited by the ASI on 17/5/71, it had ‘been ploughed recently and it supports corn now’ [SMR file], indicating that the monument was more pronounced until quite recently. Barrow is situated in undulating pasture that has been under the plough in the recent past, and which slopes down very gently, but noticeably, from WNW-ESE; it lies a short distance N of the Royal Canal, just S of which again passes the main railway from Dublin to Sligo. Immediately to W is a crescent-shaped hollow with high back wall to N and low bank forming mouth on lower S side, which is marked on 1838 OS 6” map; this type of feature, taken to be artificial—in one case a quarry—by ASI fieldworkers on 17/5/71 and 22/7/76 [SMR file], is common in the Westmeath landscape and found near other barrows (WM013-016----; WM020-015----), and appears to be a ‘dead-ice hollow’ where a fragment of ice left by a retreating glacier was embedded in the gravel and silt at the front of glacier, and then melted away (pers. comm. Seamus O’Brien). Monument forms part of a loose grouping of four ring-barrows, lying c. 200m to NW of a second similar, but slightly smaller, one in this townland (WM027-021----), and c. 280m to E of a third in Porterstown (WM027-019----); the fourth ring-barrow, also in Porterstown (WM027-036----) lies across the canal c. 600m to SW. On a gently rounded glacial hillock in Riverstown, on slightly more elevated ground (OD 90-100m) c. 950m to N, ploughing in 1969 uncovered a short rectangular cist containing a crouched skeleton with Early Bronze Age Bowl Food Vessel; radiocarbon assay of the bones yielded a date of 3645±30 BP, falling well within the date range of c. 2200-c. 1800 BC for these vessels (Ó Ríordáin 1972, 234-5; Waddell 1990, 154; Brindley 2007, 67, 74, Table 6). - WM027-021: Barrow - ring-barrow, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CWM027-021----. Monument surveyed in 2015 and described by McGuinness (2015, 70-1) as following: ‘Heavily eroded ring-barrow (Diam. 26.1m N-S x 29.5m E-W) in very low relief, comprising a low roughly circular domed mound (Diam. 13.9m N-S x 13.5m E-W) surrounded by a shallow, poorly defined ditch, and an external bank that is broad, almost flattened and difficult to discern. Where best preserved, ditch is sunk 0.4m below mound and 0.22m below bank. There is an old beech growing in ditch at SSE; part of the stump of a second with saw marks lies at interface of mound and ditch at NW, the ground has been disturbed here, presumably when the tree collapsed or was felled. Barrow caps or is shaped from a low eminence (kame?) 90m W of a kettle-hole lake, in undulating pasture immediately N of the Royal Canal, just S of which again passes the main railway from Dublin to Sligo. Monument forms part of a loose grouping of four ring-barrows, lying c. 200m to SE of a second similar but slightly larger one in this townland (WM027-021----) and c. 500m from a third example in Porterstown (WM027-019----); a fourth ring-barrow, also in Porterstown (WM027-036----), lies across the canal c. 700m to WSW. On a gently rounded glacial hillock in Riverstown, on slightly higher ground (OD 90-100m) c. 950m to N, ploughing in 1969 uncovered a short rectangular cist containing a crouched skeleton with Early Bronze Age Bowl Food Vessel; radiocarbon assay of the bones yielded a date of 3645±30 BP, falling clearly within the date range of c. 2200-c. 1800 BC for these vessels (Ó Ríordáin 1972, 234-5; Waddell 1990, 154; Brindley 2007, 67, 74, Table 6). Situated on a slight rise, in gently undulating pasture. Depicted on the revised 1913 ed. OS 25-inch map as a suboval-shaped earthwork. Monument described as a small circular-shaped area (diam. 30m) defined by a tree-lined steep scarp with faint traces of a wide external fosse. The scarp may have been steepened when the trees were planted. The perimeter is disturbed in several places by livestock and tree roots. The original entrance is not recognisable, although there is a large gap at SE. Monument is visible today as a circular-shaped tree-lined earthwork on Digital Globe aerial photography. - House, 1820–1860, Regional interest, registry number 15312022, https://www.buildingsofireland.ie/niah/search.jsp?type=record&county=WM&regno=15312022. Detached three-bay two-storey house, built c.1840, having a later single-bay single-storey enclosed flat-roofed entrance porch to the centre of the main façade (east) and a single-bay single-storey extension attached to the south gable. Pitched natural slate roof with chimneystacks to either gable end (red brick to south gable and cement rendered to the north gable). Roughcast rendered finish over smooth rendered plinth. Square-headed window openings having cut stone sills and six-over-six pane timber sliding sash windows to the first floor openings and replacement timber casement windows to the ground floor openings. Square-headed doorway to front face of porch, c.1920, having glazed surround with overlight and a timber sheeted door. Set back from road in own grounds to the southwest of Killucan/Rathwire with mature garden to the east and the remains of a former corn mill to the rear (see 15312022).

Canal lock, built c.1806, consisting of pair of (restored) timber and steel breast gates with timber footboards, tail gates and balance beams. Set within ashlar limestone lock channel with early bollards to quay. Located to the east of Footy’s Bridge (15402712).

Canal lock, built c.1806, consisting of pair of (restored) timber and steel breast gates with timber footboards, tail gates and balance beams. Set within ashlar limestone lock channel with early bollards to quay. Located to the west of Heatherstown Bridge (15402718) with a semi-detached pair of lock keeper's houses (15402717) to the south.
- Lock keeper's house, 1860–1900, Regional interest, registry number 15402717, https://www.buildingsofireland.ie/niah/search.jsp?type=record&county=WM&regno=15402717. Pair of semi-detached three-bay single-storey canal worker’s houses, built c.1880. Now combined to form a single residence. Half-hipped natural slate roof with a projecting eaves course and a cut stone chimneystack to the centre of the building to the east and a brick chimneystack (on cut stone base) to the centre to the house to the west. Constructed of rock-faced limestone with square-headed window openings having cut stone sills and replacement windows. Round-headed window opening to the west gable end. Square-headed doorcases (slightly projecting) to the centre bay of each house with timber door to structure to east. Entrance to west now blocked. Located to the west of Heatherstown Bridge (15402718) facing over canal to the north.
- Heatherstown Bridge, bridge, 1800–1810, Regional interest, registry number 15402718, https://www.buildingsofireland.ie/niah/search.jsp?type=record&county=WM&regno=15402718. Single-arch canal bridge carrying road over Royal Canal, built c.1805. Constructed of dressed limestone with ashlar limestone detailing including a projecting string course at parapet base level/road level. Early wrought-iron gate to south bank. Located to the south of Killucan.
- Killucan Railway Station, store/warehouse, 1860–1890, Regional interest, registry number 15402721, https://www.buildingsofireland.ie/niah/search.jsp?type=record&county=WM&regno=15402721. Detached six-bay former railway goods shed associated with Killucan Railway Station (now largely demolished), built c.1848, with lean-to shed to west gable end. Multi-pitched gable-fronted roof with raised limestone verges to either end (north and south). Roof now covered with glazed panels to west-facing pitch. Constructed of coursed roughly dressed limestone with rock-faced quoins to the corners. Round-headed windows to north and south facing elevations with cut stone sills. Cast-iron glazing to windows overlooking track to the south, windows to the north now mostly blocked. Square-headed carriage arches to the second bay from each end to the north facing elevation having timber sheeted doors. Located to the east of largely demolished Killucan Railway Station with cut stone platforms running along trackside to the south.
- Post box, 1860–1900, Regional interest, registry number 15402722, https://www.buildingsofireland.ie/niah/search.jsp?type=record&county=WM&regno=15402722. Wall-mounted cast-iron post box, c.1880, with 'VR' royal cipher and raised crown motif. Set in brick wall to the west end of the now largely demolished Killucan Train Station.
- Riverstown Lodge, house, 1830–1860, Regional interest, registry number 15402723, https://www.buildingsofireland.ie/niah/search.jsp?type=record&county=WM&regno=15402723. Detached double-pile three-bay single-storey house, built c.1845. Pitched natural slate roof with raised verges and rendered chimneystacks to either end. Smooth rendered walls over projecting plinth with raised quoins to the corners. Square-headed window openings with cut stone sills, architraved surrounds and two-over-two pane timber sliding sash windows. Central round-headed doorcase to the main façade (east) having architraved surround, early timber panelled door and a fanlight over with banded cast-iron glazing. Set back from road grounds to the south of Killucan.
